Reading tools Andrea Vudrag Reading tools allow computers to rapidly read marks that represents codes. There are different types of reading tools: Optical mark readers Magnetic ink character readers Ber code readers Radio frequency indentification readers (RFID) Optical mark readers This readers use reflected light to determine the location of pencil marks on standardized test answer sheets and similar forms. Magnetic ink character readers This kind of reading tools read those oddshaped numbers printed with magnetic ink on check. Bar code readers This readers use light to read UPCs (universal product codes),inventory codes, and other codes created from patterns of variable-width bars. In many stores, bar code readers are attached to point-of-sale (POS) terminals, which send scaned information to a mainframe computer. Radio frequency indentification (RFID) readers They use radio waves to communicate with Radio frequency indentification (RFID) tags. When energized by a nearby RFID reader,an RFID tag broadcasts its unique indentification number to the reader, which digitizes the information for input into a computer. They can be as large as a deck of cards or as small as a grain of rice. RFID tags are also used to indentify railroad cars, automobiles at toll booths etc. Optical character recognition (OCR) This technology is used for recognizing individual characters on a printed page,so they can be stored and edited as text. How does it work Before a computer can recognize handwriting or printed text,it must first create a digital image of the page that it can store in memory. This is usually done with an input device known as scanner. The computer can then use OCR software to interpret the black-and-white scanned patterns as letters and numbers. Special-purpose scanners Pen scanners Handwriting recognition software Personal digital assistants (PDAs) Pen scanners They look like highlighters, but they are actually wireless scanners that can perform character recognition on the fly. When you drag a pen scanner across a line of printed text,it creates a text file in its bulit-in memory, where it is stored until you transfer Personal digital assistants (PDAs) These are handheld pen computers that serve as pocket-sized organizers, notebooks, appointment books, and communication devices. They can also be programmed for specialized work, ranging from sports scorekeeping to medical analysis. Newer models feature multimedia functionality, such as music playback and video and photo viewing. Smart whiteboard It can serve as an input device for a PC,so each board full of information is stored as a digital image on the computer’s disk. Handwriting recognition software can turn the whiteboard notes into a text file that can be emailed to meeting or class participants. THE END
