Origin of Name of Constellation
• Rigel is located in the left knee of the
constellation Orion the Hunter.
• Orion was a giant huntsman of Greek
mythology whom Zeus placed among the stars
as the constellation of Orion. The most
important events are his birth somewhere in
Boeotia, his death by the blow of Artemis or
of the giant scorpion which became Scorpio,
and his elevation to the heavens.
The Life Cycle of Rigel
• Rigel was “born” in the Orion Nebula and will
explode into a supernova.
• Rigel will eventually become a neutron star or
a black hole.
• It is currently in its supergiant stage.
