In 1929 Edwin Hubble
discovered that all galaxies
are moving away from
each other
Hubble discovered that the
light from stars and galaxies
was shifted red….
Raisin Bread Analogy:
The universe grows like
baking bread, each raisin
stays in the same place
but moves away from the
other raisins as the bread
grows… the same goes
for the Universe
The black lines are called
spectral lines. These
lines are colors that are
not given off by the star
light, that is why they are
black. It identifies the
star.
1. Every star gives off a light
spectrum(rainbow)… this is the spectrum
from our Sun
2. Every star that Hubble saw outside our
solar system had a red shift….. And was
moving away from us….
The identifying spectra
shift RIGHT in the star
that is moving away.

moving towards something and stretch if moving
away….

4. Objects moving away from you have light that is stretched, and
therefore more RED, hence the term RED SHIFT
