Our Solar System
Let’s take a trip into our Solar
System to learn more about our
planets. Ready?
3….2…1..BLASTOFF!!!
Let’s start on Earth…
• Third planet from the sun
• Seventy percent of the Earth is
water
• Earth is the only planet that we know
of that has life, water, plants, and
Earth is the only planet with one moon
Mercury
• Because it is the closest to the sun it
spins the fastest at 30 miles per
second.
• Similar to Earth's moon
• Mercury is a small and mysterious
planet with a harsh environment. It is
not the place to plan your next
vacation.
Venus
• The clouds around Venus never leave
or blow away, causing the
"greenhouse" effect…the hottest
temperature on Venus is 886F ! (the
hottest on Earth is 136F)
• Instead of rain, poison comes out of
the clouds on Venus, it has rivers of
red metal, and is the only planet
without moons.
Mars
• Called the red planet because of the
iron in its soil
• Has huge dust storms that can sweep
across the entire planet and last for
months
• Scientists have discovered ice in
Mars’ polar ice caps
Jupiter
• Biggest planet in the solar system
• So large that all the other planets
and moons in the solar system could
fit inside it
• Jupiter has two rings around it. The
planet turns on its axis, but the rings
stay in one place
Saturn
• Made of gas and spins very fast
on its axis – up to 100 mph!
• On the planet you may find white spots. The
white spots are called white storms; these
are storms that never end
• Saturn is said to have 28 moons and still
counting. Scientists are still trying to spot
some moons they haven't spotted yet
• Scientists also say that some of the moons
were pulled away from Uranus's orbit
Uranus
• The temperature on Uranus is usually
-357 degrees F
• The length of 1 year (a full rotation
around the sun) on Uranus is about 87
Earth years (30,681 days). A day on
Uranus is about 17 hours and 8
minutes.
• Uranus has 15 moons and 11 rings.
Neptune
• Winds on Neptune can reach up to
600 miles per hour
• 3 billion miles from the sun
• On all planets the moons usually
travel in one direction, but Neptune is
different. Triton, one of Neptune’s
moons, travels in an opposite
direction than all of the other moons.
Pluto
• Pluto is the farthest planet from the Sun
so far and that Pluto is the smallest planet
• Pluto has a very unusual orbit Scientists
say that it " lays on its side" they say that
because it spins vertically
• Pluto has one satellite named Charon ,
Charon is half the size of Pluto. Some
scientists have called Pluto and Charon "the
doubled planet" because they're so close in
size. Scientists say that Charon is a moon
pulled away from Neptune
How are these planets different
from our planet, Earth?
