CS CS omputer Science cholarship Day December 2, 2006 Dr. H. E. Dunsmore Department of Computer Sciences Purdue University 1 CS Department of Computer Science • Founded in 1962 by Prof. Samuel D. Conte • Ranked as one of the leading departments in the world in research and teaching • 500 undergraduate students – 150 freshmen – 41 faculty members 2 CS We Are One of The Best! • Roots in Math and College of Science • First degree granting CS Department in the world (1962) • We have moved into the new Lawson Computer Science Building! 3 CS The Challenges Facing Computer Science for the Next Ten Years • • • • • • • • • • Ubiquitous Computing Mobile Computing Data Compression, Bandwidth Expansion Programming vs. Creating Systems Human-Computer Interaction Graphics, Visualization Bioinformatics, Computational Biology Databases: Massive Data Handling, Data Mining Security Vandalism, Terrorism 4 CS RUMOR: All Computer Science jobs are going offshore … Outsourced to India, China, Philippines, etc. 5 CS FACT: Forrester Research, Inc. estimates that only 4% of all Information Technology (IT) jobs were outsourced in 2004. This will grow to only 9% by 2010. The jobs that are being outsourced typically involve low level skills (data entry, data analysis) or repetitive tasks (writing yet another hospital records system). Purdue University Computer Science graduates do neither low level nor repetitive tasks. They design innovative systems, create operating system security mechanisms, design new programming environments, create new wireless protocols, etc. 6 CS Where Do Our Graduates Go • 86% industry – Dec 2005, May/Aug 2006 starting salary +$55,000 • 14% graduate school 7 CS Diverse CS Opportunities Career options in: • Business and Management Amazon, Eli Lilly • Software Companies Google, IBM, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems • Computer Manufacturers HP, IBM, Intel, Sun Microsystems • Software Engineering applications and development Boeing, Exxon Mobil, Guidant, Raytheon • Research careers in universities and labs Argonne National Labs, Oak Ridge National Labs 8 CS Scholarships Available for Incoming Students • CS Undergraduate Scholarship – One $18,000, 4 year • CS Corporate Partners’ Council Scholarships – A total of $15,000 • Young Scientist Scholarship – $2,000, 1 year • Grub Scholarship – $3,500, 1 year • Boeing $3,500, 1 year 9 CS Faculty Interview Team Dr. Daniel Aliaga Dr. H.
