RFID: A Diversity of
Disciplines & Applications
Paul Hartmann
General Vice Chair
IEEE RFID 2008
RFID: Why now?
• One bright result from the bursting of the dot com
bubble: The rapid deployment of the Internet and the
data infrastructure.
• RFID is an Automation Technology
– It is the technology that answers the question, “Where is it now?”
• RFID relies on the presence of ubiquitous data
infrastructure.
– Data infrastructure wasn’t built because of RFID.
– With data infrastructure in place, the need for RFID is apparent
everywhere.

RFID: Design and Applications
• RFID systems design cuts across numerous
technical areas
– RF and Antennas
– Communication and Data protocols
– Wireless Techniques and Sensors
• RFID system applications cut an even wider
swath across technologies
– Need to locate and identify is a common need in
many industry segments.

Our Challenge
• Making RFID fulfill its potential
– Meeting the performance and cost goals
– Defining the engineering rules that allow
predictable system performance to be
achieved
– Expanding the capabilities of RFID
• That is what this conference is all about
