Diet
• Many crabs are omnivores which eat
plants and meat like a person. Others
are carnivores, like lions, which only eat
meat. Some of them are herbivores, like
cows, which eat plants only.
• Crabs are 10-legged animals that walk
sideways. They walk sideways because
that’s the way their legs are.
Breathing
• Some crabs breathe under the water with
gills located in two cavities under the
carapace like marine crabs.
Some of them breathe air like true land
crabs. They have enlarged, modified
cavities that act like lungs.

Reproduction
• Crabs may take up to 18 months to reach
maturity, depending on the water
temperature and the length of the season.
Crabs are heterosexual.
• Blue crab mating takes place in waters
which are not high in salt content from
June through October. It occurs in areas
chosen by females, usually shallow,
marshy areas or beds of submerged
vegetation.
