El Centro Area Shows Dramatic Increase in Economic
Development Growth
The El Centro area moved up from 70th place to 29th place overall in a
recently released index that evaluates economic growth.
It ranked above the national average for small cities in job, technology
and wage and salary growth.
The Milken Institute, a nonprofit, non-partisan economic think tank ranks
U.S. metropolitan areas every year by how well they create and sustain
jobs and economic growth. Its index is based on relative rankings
between cities.
A surge in renewable energy development has given El Centro's MSA a
much-needed boost.
The area is home to solar, wind and geothermal energy plants. "We've
been able to put more people to work in Imperial County in 2012 and
2013 than ever in our history," said Micah Mitrosky, environmental
organizer for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 569.
IBEW Local 569 represents workers in the electrical industry in San
Diego and Imperial Counties. Demand for renewable energy jobs is so
high that the chapter added more than 800 members from Imperial
County in 2013 alone.
