COLLABORATION BETWEEN MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL AND CONTROL ENGINEERS
REDUCE TIME TO DESIGN, DEVELOP, AND DELIVER
You've always known Rockwell Automation to be known as a trusted source of control products and solutions. Typically, your
mechanical engineering department had little involvement in these control system discussions, and machines were designed with
handoffs between the different engineering
groups. Design, build, and test seemed to
Software
work just fine.
Today, industries demand machines with higher
throughput at lower costs while also
demonstrating energy efficiency and excellent
reliability. This is only possible with a
system-wide, mechatronic approach - where
cross-functional data can be shared between the
controls, electrical and the mechanical engineer.
To enable this interdisciplinary design approach,
Rockwell Automation developed a software
called Motion Analyzer. This software helps
make it faster and easier to analyze, optimize,
simulate, and select motion control systems.
To incorporate the mechanical systems into the
process, Rockwell Automation partnered with
SolidWorks, a premiere mechanical design
package used by many machine designers.
Finally, Rockwell Automation enhanced its
product portfolio to include direct drive
technologies that deliver the highest possible
motion control performance.
Engineers are now able to more effectively
evaluate design alternatives and investigate
machine behavior by creating digital prototypes
of the machines earlier in the process. These
products and software enhancements, combined
with our specialist support services, are key to
how Rockwell Automation can help you build a
world-class motion control system.

Hardware
A comprehensive group of motion products, including direct drive
motors, linear stages, stacked stages and electric cylinders helps you
deliver excellent machines.
These products either allow you to couple directly to the load,
eliminating transmission components which add backlash and
compliance to the system, or have a larger rotor inertia, which
improves the inertia ratio of the system. System benefits
include reduced mechanical vibration, improved dynamic
performance and lower power consumption.

IMPROVE PRODUCTIVITY WITH LESS DOWNTIME AND FASTER MACHINE RESTART
Safety on the manufacturing floor is an important concern. Safeguarding personnel not only prevents injuries, it can also lower
insurance, maintenance and other related costs. But machine productivity is crucial, too. You’re facing constant pressure to produce
more and produce it faster. In the past, bringing safety and
productivity together was a challenge. Safety precautions
were often cumbersome, expensive and resulted in a great
deal of downtime. But with Kinetix servo drives with
embedded safety, you can take advantage of high
performance servo drives that not only increase safety
for personnel but also enable machine productivity
enhancements. The benefits are:
• Faster production recovery by allowing safe motion
during machine setup and maintenance
• Embedded safety monitoring technology reduces
wiring, troubleshooting and cost
• Complete system offering and support from one
supplier with Rockwell Automation's broad
safety offering

SAVE TIME AND MONEY WITH ENERGY-EFFICIENT MOTION SYSTEMS
MAKE YOUR OPERATIONS CLEANER AND MORE EFFICIENT WHILE
IMPROVING PERFORMANCE AND THE BOTTOM LINE
In today's manufacturing world, machine builders are facing increasing pressure to maximize
output while minimizing environmental impact. Now, more than ever, it is critical to
understand how you can design, build and
maintain sustainable machines that optimize
energy consumption.
Incorporating new tools and technologies from
Rockwell Automation into your design will help
drive and support overall sustainability goals
while saving money and improving machine
performance and reliability.
The latest tools and technologies from
Rockwell Automation can help you:
• Gain awareness of energy usage early in the
design cycle
• Optimize machine design for efficiency
while meeting performance goals
• Reduce mechanical losses and energy consumption
• Replace fluid power with more efficient
electric cylinders
Develop an energy-efficient design with
virtual prototyping
Motion Analyzer software allows you to model machines
in a virtual environment and predict energy consumption
and cost for the system. Using the built-in system efficiency
tool, you can quickly identify where power from the motor
is being consumed and compare different design alternatives
to help choose the most energy efficient solution.
12
Increase machine performance
Direct drive servo motors mount directly to the
load therefore there is no need need for additional
mechanical transmission components. Backlash
and compliance are minimized, as are the inherent
mechanical inefficiencies, providing a significant
improvement in overall system performance while
reducing energy consumption.
Think Efficiency
Reduce Material Use and Waste
By decreasing the amount of packaging materials
used, Kinetix motion control products are able to
help improve performance and provide sustainability,
while also:
• Creating smoother automation controls
• Establishing a gentler manufacturing
• Reducing amount of waste
• Being environmentally responsible
Kliklok-Woodman used mechatronic design tools and
products to build an improved endload packaging
machine that fills cartons with packaged foods, and
then seals them. To package the products properly into
the carton, the machine uses a flap kicker, a finger-like
device that deflects the flaps of each carton outward at
the right time.
Kliklok-Woodman used Motion Analyzer Software
with SolidWorks to help size, select and simulate a new
design for the flap kicker to improve accuracy and
reliability at speeds of up to 325 cartons per minute.
Based on the requirements of their system, the
software identified the most efficient motors and
drives to optimize their system.
Using the Motion Analyzer software allowed them to:
• Reduce design time by approximately 1/3 compared
to using manual calculations
• Identify the amount of energy used in the system
and where it can be reduced
• Achieve the specified speed and throughput needed
• Minimize the amount of material waste by
not testing multiple prototypes
Reduce energy consumption
With electric cylinders, you are now able to select
the right power solution to meet your application
needs. By reducing the demand for compressed
utilities, such as air and oil, you are often able to
reduce leakage, maintenance of equipment and
energy usage running compressors - during normal
and unforeseen pauses in production.
"It made complete sense to use Motion Analyzer to do
the initial motor sizing because the motion of the flap
kicker is solely dependent upon the size of the
particular carton and the size of its flaps. I could plug
in the specific end-user requirements and quickly test
different servo motor sizes to find the right one,
avoiding the need to test each option on a physical
machine.”

Drives and Motion Accelerator Toolkit
This collection of design tools can help you significantly reduce the time and cost of developing a new application using
Rockwell Automation equipment, especially PowerFlex® AC Drives and Kinetix® Servo Drives
Toolkit provides sets of modules that are combined to produce:
• An initial Bill of Material
• A beginning set of CAD drawings for wiring diagrams and panel layouts
• An initial logic program written around the specific products used by
the application
• Initial HMI screens designed around the specific products used by
the application
Information is delivered in a modular format.
• Module provides control and information for individual product or function
• Selecting specific modules allows you to tailor the application
• Modules are designed to interact in standard understandable and usable ways
• Selects the specific modules needed for the application
• Selected modules are combined, using standard design tools, to build
starting BOM, CAD, Logic and HMI application files
RSLogix™ 5000 Software
Motion Instructions are integrated into RSLogix 5000 Software
for Fast, Convenient Programming
• One software package, RSLogix 5000, provides complete support for drive
configuration, programming, commissioning, diagnostics and maintenance.
• Extensive library of 41 motion instructions provides a broad range of basic
and advanced motion functionality including time and position camming
(TCAM, PCAM), linear and circular interpolation, kinematics and high speed
event handling support
Integrated Motion Configuration and Commissioning Makes Drive Control Easy
• Drive, motor and actuator selection and configuration is simplified by use of catalog numbers. This out-of-the-box “connect and run”
support eliminates the need for complex drive/motor/actuator configuration and tuning.
• Create tags once and use enterprise-wide
Powerful Diagnostics to Identify and Resolve Problems
• Time stamped faults and alarms log provides precise drive speed and position regulation
• With remote diagnostics, detailed drive and motor status information is available anywhere in the Logix system, allowing you to
remotely manage applications where needed.
