RESNET is the "Residential Computer Network" within your College which provides access to College services, the University of Queensland and the Internet. RESNET offers a Local Area Network connection to every resident at speeds of up to 100Mbits per second. This is up to 10 times faster than the fastest broadband services on offer and 1500 times faster than a 56k modem connection. RESNET was created to provide a standard system for connecting to network resources across a number of colleges. The information in this guide will assist you in getting connected and answering some questions you may have about the services on offer. RESNET is operated by the Colleges' Information Technology Group (or CITG) on behalf of the members: Cromwell College Emmanuel College International House St John’s College The Women's College Duchesne College Grace College King’s College St Leo's College CITG was formed to provide a non-profit information technology management and advice center solely focused on delivering advanced services to the Colleges. For more information, please see http://www.citg.uq.edu.au or, for assistance, please consult the back of this guide for additional contact details. Revision 1, January 14 3 COMPUTING HANDBOOK FOR RESIDENTS Help Desk 777 CITG operates a Help Desk to assist both staff and students with system faults. The help desk is available for students to register faults relating to the College network, printers, lab computers, or the network configuration of their personal machine. At this stage the help desk is unable to provide application support for students. It is imperative that any network or computer lab faults are reported as soon as possible. To report a fault, simply call 777 from your college phone. It is important that you provide a detailed explanation of the fault, so that it may be located and corrected as soon as possible. Not all faults will be internal to the College and may take longer to resolve. This is normally the case where another service provider (such as the University) has a fault and that service is not available within College. Still report these to the helpdesk, so that we are at least aware that this problem has occurred. The help desk is manned between the hours of 8:00am and 6:00pm Monday to Friday. There is also a voicemail service attached to the line for reporting faults if the line is busy or after hours. When reporting a fault, please be ready to provide: Your Name and Username Description/location of fault Your College and Phone Extn. Revision 1, January 14 4 COMPUTING HANDBOOK FOR RESIDENTS Network Access - In order to access anything on the network you will need a ResnetID. - To access the Internet you will need a UQAccount. How do I get a ResnetID? For most UQ students, this happens automatically. As long as the college has your UQ username you will be entered onto our system and a ResnetID created for you. If you are a new UQ student you will need to provide the college with your UQ username before a ResnetID can be processed. You will not be able to access anything from college, including the Internet, until you have a ResnetID. How do I get a UQAccount? Your UQ Username begins with “s” and is the first 7 digits of your student number. All enrolled students have a student number. If you are not a UQ student you can get a UQ username by visiting UQConnect (building 42). Ask for a College Commercial Internet Access Account. These cost $4 per month and must be paid in advance. How long will it take? From the time the request is sent from your college reception to when your account is active will depend on how many other accounts need creating at the time. During busy times it may take up to 24 hours. Revision 1, January 14 5 COMPUTING HANDBOOK FOR RESIDENTS The Computer Lab Overview Each College provides a computer lab for student use. These labs are running Microsoft Office, Internet browsers and provide access to the College laser printers. Getting Access You will need a ResnetID to log onto the computer lab computers. To access the Internet you will need to use your UQConnect username and password. Note: the passwords are usually different. To log-in in the Lab: 1. Press Control-Alt-Delete 2. Enter your ResnetID Username in the box provided 3. Enter your ResnetID Password 4. Click OK Make sure the Caps Lock key is not on if you are having trouble. Ask at the office to have forgotten your ResnetID. To log-out in the Lab: 1. Click Start 2. Select the Arrow next to the padlock 3. Choose Logoff 4. Click OK Failure to log off allows others to use your Internet and Print Credit. You will not be reimbursed for quota lost in this way. Revision 1, January 14 6 COMPUTING HANDBOOK FOR RESIDENTS To change your password: ResnetID Log in to a lab computer then press Control-Alt-Delete again. Press the Change Password button. UQConnect You can change your UQConnect password online at http://uqconnect.net/password If you Forget your password: Resnet ID Go to the front office and ask to have your ResnetID letter reprinted. This will automatically reset your password. UQConnect Call the UQConnect helpdesk on extn. 56000. Choose option 1. Have your UQ Username ready. Security Your ResnetID identifies you to the College and to the printer charging system. As such, you should guard this like your Personal Identification Number and not give it out to anyone. Any unauthorized activity will be linked to you, so be sure to log out whenever you leave the computer lab. Printing Laser printing is available from the Computer Lab. All you have to do is print your document. A charging system is in place at the colleges, so please check the table at the back of this handbook to see what charges apply to you. Internet Access Internet access is available in the computer labs as described later in this handbook. Revision 1, January 14 7 COMPUTING HANDBOOK FOR RESIDENTS Courtesy to Others Please remember that the computer lab is for all members of the College. Do: Let us know if something is not working so it can be fixed as quickly as possible. Clean up the desk area when you are finished Log-out if you are leaving the room Let others use the systems for assignments if you are just browsing email or internet. Do Not: Leave computers logged in Attempt to disconnect, remove or damage any equipment. Doing so only disadvantages other students. Bring food or drinks into the computer room. Backup Your Work You cannot save your work to the computer lab computers. Please make sure you frequently back up your work to a USB device, cloud service or email a copy to yourself. CITG cannot be held responsible for work that is lost under any circumstances. Revision 1, January 14 8 COMPUTING HANDBOOK FOR RESIDENTS The Local Area Network Overview Each College provides a Local Area Network which allows its residents and visitors to have access to various computing resources such as the Internet or laser printing. What do I need? Residents wishing to connect to the Network should have a PC or Mac with the following minimum configuration: Dual-Core i3 Processor (or better) 4GB RAM CAT6 Ethernet (Network) Cable* Operating System CD Windows 7**, Windows 8 or Mac OSX Snow Leopard or above * Users can purchase Ethernet cables from the college if required. ** Windows XP will still operate on the network but support by Microsoft will cease on April 8 2014. N.B. This is a minimum requirement for connection to the Local Area Network. A more recent computer will obviously perform faster and will be more likely to last the duration of a University degree. Revision 1, January 14 9 COMPUTING HANDBOOK FOR RESIDENTS What can I access? Both educational and recreational services are available on the network such as: Sharing files with other residents. Printing to the college laser printers. Access to the Internet. Free-to-Air TV For a more detailed list, refer to the CITG webpage and click on “Policies” to view the Resident Policies. Getting Connected There are two easy ways to get connected to the network. 1. Have a CITG technician do it for you (cost involved) or, 2. You can do it yourself for free. 1. CITG Technician Please see your college office to request a technician. Once we have your details, we will call you to arrange an appropriate time. This service costs $50 and includes a network cable. - During busy periods it may take a few days before an appointment can be scheduled. 2. Self-Configuration To configure your own computer for the network, you will need: a network cable ($10 from the college office) and this guide (both PC and Mac guides are available). Please note: in fairness to everyone, we are unable to talk you through the configuration process. If you are unable to configure your computer using this handbook you will need to request a technician. Revision 1, January 14 10 COMPUTING HANDBOOK FOR RESIDENTS Free UQ Internet Access (UQ Students Only) Overview Internet Access is provided by the University of Queensland for academic purposes. This allows UQ students to access lecture notes and other materials from the University, and to perform research on sites outside the University. Email accounts are also provided by the University to allow students to correspond with lecturers and peers. How do I get access? First of all you need to provide the college with your UQ Username. We can then create a ResnetID for you. Next, you need access to the network from your room, or in the computer lab. Personal computers will also need to be registered. (see the section on Network Registration p20) You will have received your UQ Account details with your enrollment information. If you are unsure of these details you will need to contact UQConnect on 3365 6000. How does it work? Your username and password is used to identify you to the University system. Any time you are connecting to a University computer service, you will need these details. Each time you start an Internet Session and request a site outside your University, you will be prompted to enter your details. Enter your UQ username and password in the appropriate spaces and then Click OK. Revision 1, January 14 11 COMPUTING HANDBOOK FOR RESIDENTS How much does it cost? Each UQ student is allocated 10GB free on the first of each month. All University related web pages are UNRESTRICTED and do not count against your quota. Access to all sites OUTSIDE the University is metered and all data usage is counted towards your quota. WARNING: Your account can be overdrawn. You will have NO access to external sites until the account reaches a positive balance again. If you run out, you can purchase additional quota either - online @ http://uqconnect.net/download - over the phone by calling UQConnect (credit card only) - or in person @ UQConnect (building 42) Additional quota is available in scratch card form in the denominations listed below. 500MB 1GB 5GB $7.00 $10.00 $15.00 10GB 20GB 30GB $20.00 $35.00 $50.00 Bulk quota specials are usually available at the beginning of each semester offering significant savings. Revision 1, January 14 25 COMPUTING HANDBOOK FOR RESIDENTS Computer Security As soon as you connect your computer to the Local Area Network, your computer may be vulnerable to attacks. There are three important steps you should do to keep your computer safe. 1. Install (and use) Antivirus software Antivirus software is by far the easiest step to maintaining a virus free system. Antivirus without the latest updates however is virtually useless. Make sure you keep it up to date. We Recommend: Microsoft Security Essentials or AVGFree 2. Keep Windows Updated Microsoft regularly issues patches or updates to solve security problems in their software. The critical updates are the ones you should be concerned about. If these are not applied, it leaves your computer vulnerable to hackers. A Windows updater is installed by default when you run the CITG Network Registration Wizard. This will connect you to the CITG servers for updates so you don’t use up your Internet quota 3. Common Sense - Don’t open email messages from people you don’t know (especially messages with attachments) - Be careful downloading from websites and file shares - Scan your system regularly for viruses, spyware and adware.
