Vodafone Innovation
Days 2008
“Speed is the killer application for mobile communications” –
with this statement, Vodafone CTO Hartmut Kremling opened
the 4th Vodafone Innovation Days which took place on 23rd and
24th September 2008 in the Vodafone Test & Innovation Center, Düsseldorf and focused on future developments alongside
Vodafone’s current successful positioning.
Together with established partners and distributors, Vodafone
presented the possibilities that the UMTS successor Long Term
Evolution (LTE) will offer in the future. With bandwidths of up to
173 Mbit/s downstream and up to 58 Mbit/s upstream, high-resolution TV programmes (HDTV) can also be easily transmitted via
the mobile network. One partner of Vodafone already presented a
functional end device for data transfer using LTE.
With a total of 26 showcases and a broad spectrum of expert talks,
on both days Vodafone and its partners offered the journalists and
representatives from a wide variety of companies an insight into
the technology and trends of tomorrow within the field of mobile
and fixed communications.
The highlights of the showcases presented included:
•The currently unique traffic information system
“HD-Traffic” from TomTom which forecasts traffic jams
precisely and informs traffic of nearby dangers.
•The text translation software for mobile phones “Shoot
& Translate” from Linguatec.
•The bugproof telephony solution “Securvoice” from
Secusmart.
•The control software “Mind over matter” from Sapient
which can be used to operate notebooks and mobile
phones with only face muscles and brainwaves.
•The mini-beamer “Micro Professional Projector
MPro 110” from 3M.
•The mobile solution from CGI for increasing productivity
in the area of food control.
•The transmission of live radio programmes to broad casters by Sonoplus via the Vodafone mobile network.
•The Vodafone application “My Portal” allows users to set
up individual home pages for mobile phones.
•The visually oriented search solution from otello which
can be used, for example, to obtain further information
on a film based on a photo of a film poster sent via MMS.
Information was provided on topics such as current trends in research and development, the potential of mobile broadband for
pocket-sized offices and the merging of Vodafone and Arcor.
The capability and extensive portfolio of the Vodafone Test &
Innovation Center were also presented, as well as the availability
of services that enable customers to work within a real test environment to develop innovative products until they are ready for series
production.
In an interactive presentation, TV presenter Kai Pflaume also showed which possibilities Web 2.0 has to offer.
The Vodafone Test & Innovation Center was also represented at the
Innovation Days with a large information stand. The individual divisions provided visitors with information on their own specific range
of services. Tours were also offered which enabled visitors to gain
an insight into the dimensions of the Test Center. For the first time,
a 40-GBit router was presented which constitutes the core of the
future backbone network of Vodafone and Arcor.
The software company Carano was accorded the particular honour
of receiving the first Vodafone Application Award for the best application in the mobile network. The company’s winning product
“colourbeam” was selected from among 50 rival projects. It enables
secure machine-to-machine communication via optical signals
that are sent from the mobile phone display – for example, for mobile admission tickets or mobile payment.
As a whole, the feedback from visitors, exhibitors and journalists on
the 4th Vodafone Innovation Days was very positive. It is not surprising, therefore, that there is already huge interest in the 5th Vodafone Innovation Days next year which are sure to attract scores of
visitors, exhibitors and journalists once again. n
Vodafone and Arcor
Test Centers combined
IPv6 – It is time for
the future
The merging of all test activities in the areas of mobile communications, fixed network, data services and broadband internet on
15th June 2008 has expanded the portfolio of the Vodafone Test
& Innovation Center. It now also offers fixed network test environments and know-how in the areas of DSL, NGN and fixed network
and has become the most important test and innovation platform
in Europe.
IPv4 has been tried and trusted as a stable and reliable technology for many years. However, organizations around the world are
currently demanding that the migration to IPv6 should be executed as quickly as possible because the international IP registry
authorities will soon run out of IPv4 addresses. IANA predicts that
the last IPv4 addresses will be handed out to regional registries in
2011 at the latest. It is therefore high time to think about IPv6 and
plan for the future.
The existing Test and Innovation Centers in Duesseldorf and Frankfurt are networked via broadband data connections and enable
testing to be performed in both locations. The special expertise
of the test and innovation teams is therefore combined with the
objective of achieving competitive advantages for product launches – particularly with relation to quality and speed, above all for
convergent products.
The Test Center in Eschborn/Frankfurt spans 1,000 m² and offers
everything that is necessary for developing and operating the
fixed network and data highways of the future. Bandwidths of up
to 40 GBit/s for the backbone are tested here in order to bring
applications such as internet television and video-on-demand
services to market maturity. The Test Center in Duesseldorf offers
a complete mobile network over 7,000 m² – from the base station
and multimedia platforms right through to accounting systems –
in order to prepare services, end devices and systems technology
for commercial employment.
We are therefore able to provide the perfect solution for the development, test and trial of IPv6-enabled mobile devices, applications, services, platforms and systems. Our customers can gather
hands-on experience with IPv6 in a real test environment and reinforce their management decisions with hard facts and test results.
A broad range of IPv6 mobile network system vendors have been
aggregated at the Center. These systems are also available for
IPv6 interconnection tests.
Our customers benefit from our broad and profound knowledge
and international experience in the field of IPv6 telecommunications networks and services. n

The Vodafone Test & Innovation Center has therefore become a
full-range supplier on the telecommunications and information
technology markets. The Director of the Vodafone Test & Innovation Center, Jill Doppelfeld-Watson, sums up: “We are therefore
in a good position for the communications business of the future
within a highly competitive environment.” n
As one of Europe’s first mobile network providers, the Vodafone
Test and Innovation Center recently created a complete and production-like IPv6 mobile packet data network that is now available
for testing by our customers. Due to the already existing extensive
basic infrastructure, we are able to provide an unparalleled IPv6
test environment within a production-like, true-to-reality mobile
network. Our extensive portfolio of IPv4 mobile services and platforms is being made available for IPv6 testing by means of IETF
and 3GPP-recommended IPv6-IPv4 transitional mechanisms.
