Apple Airport
Express
Installation and
Configuration.
Mac
I would strongly recommend that the configuration of the DW6000 and D2, such
as commissioning and changing of IP addressing of the D2 after commissioning,
be done thru a wired LAN connection and the installation and setup of the Airport
Express be done after you have done the first search and have been online for
the first time in order to minimize the amount of variables if problems are
encountered with the initial setup.
1. In order for this setup to work properly you will need to have the following:
A. D2 Positioner
B. DW6000 modem
C. Apple Airport Express Base Station
D. Switch with 3 or more ports. NOT a router if possible, you can always
use the LAN side of a router and turn off DHCP and NAT but a plain
switch would work much better. The Airport Express is fully network
compliant so any switch from Linksys, D-Link, Netgear or similar
manufacturers will work just fine.
2. Connect the D2 Positioner, DW6000 modem and the Apple Airport
Express to the switch using regular patch cables (non Crossover). Once
the Airport Express receives an IP address from the DW6000, it’s status
light will turn solid Green.
3. Insert the Airport Express CD into the Mac and then double click on the
CD icon on the Desktop, this should open the CD contents window. Look
for and click on the “Install Airport and iTunes” icon and this should launch
the installer.
4. Once the installer is launched a screen may come up saying that a
program needs to run to check if the software can be installed, click
“Continue” and then following the prompts clicking continue and agreeing
to the End User License Agreement.
5. Once you get to the Install Volume selection screen ensure that you select
the volume which you normally boot into. If unsure which volume to select
then look on the desktop for the top right most icon, this should be the
name of the volume you are currently booted into. Select this volume in
the installer and click Continue.
6. Once the system is ready to install the software you will be prompted to
click on the “Upgrade” button. Do so at this time and the software will
begin it’s installation, the system may require you to authenticate in order
to install software, this is normal in Unix systems and the password
required is the password used to log onto the Mac when booted or set up
when the customer first set up the computer. The system may also give
you a warning that the system will need to be restarted.
7. Once the system is done installing the Airport Express Software and
restarted it will want to upgrade iTunes if this is required. You can cancel
out of this installer at this time if you do not want to upgrade iTunes which
is a media player from Apple and not required for the install.
8. After the installation the system will auto launch the Apple Airport Express
configuration utility; however; if it does not, go to Boot
Volume\Applications\Utilities\Airport Express Assistant and double click on
it.
9. Once the Airport Express Assistant opens, wait for the “Continue” button
to become dark and then click on it once.
10. At the next page make sure the radio button is on “Set up a new Airport
Express” and then click “Continue”.
11. At the next screen ensure the radio button is on “Create a new Wireless
Network” and click “Continue”.
12. At this screen the system will search out for an Airport Express and once
seen thru the wireless adapter it should show on the list as something
similar to this “Apple Network 04abf7”.
13. Select this entry and click “Continue”. Follow the rest of the instructions by
giving the appropriate names for the customer to both the Express Base
Station and the Wireless Network name and then click “Continue”.
14. On the following screen either enabled WEP or leave it disabled, this
option is up to you and the customer.
15. On the following screen make sure the radio button is on the selection for
“I connect to the Internet using a DSL or Cable modem using DHCP” then
click “Continue”.
16. Finally set the Airport Express Password and retype it and click
“Continue”.
17. On the final screen the system will show you all the settings and give you
an opportunity to make any changes you want or start over or click
“Update” to restart the base station and once done the computer will see it
as a regular network and you can connect to it like any wireless router.
