COLORECTAL SURGERY TEAM
Colorectal Surgery
Our surgeons comprise one of the most experienced minimally invasive
colorectal teams in the country, and by far the most experienced minimally
invasive surgical resource in the region, with international benchmark
outcomes for mortality (0.3 percent), length of stay (median three days),
complications (readmission rate 6 percent), rectal cancer local recurrence
rates (3 percent) and survival.
NATIONALLY PROMINENT IN THE FIELD OF
OUTCOMES RESEARCH:

e have developed and validated the HospitAl stay, Readmission
W
and Mortality (HARM) score, a simple tool to facilitate surgical quality
improvement initiatives that enhance patient outcomes. It is easily
calculated from routine administrative data without the need for
dedicated resources or specialized training.
ur team has validated a step surgeons can take to reduce patients’
O
hospital stays after colorectal surgery: adding a transversus abdominis
plane (TAP) block to surgical care. Results of our studies have shown
the mean hospital stay dropped to less than 2.5 days.

GENERAL AND GASTROINTESTINAL SURGERY TEAM
General and
Gastrointestinal Surgery
PIONEERING MINIMALLY INVASIVE TECHNIQUES
Our surgeons, who have pioneered many minimally invasive techniques, teach nationally
and internationally on a regular basis, publishing many of the authoritative texts on these
conditions. As an affiliate of the prestigious Institute for Surgery and Innovation (ISI) and
American College of Surgeons Level One Institute, physicians from across the globe travel to
UH regularly to study our innovative surgical procedures.
ADVANCED AND UNIQUE
PROCEDURES OFFERED:
•
eneral minimally invasive procedures including
G
gallbladder surgery and gastric and small
bowel resections.
•
L aparoscopic and endoscopic management for enteral
feeding including percutaneous endoscopic gastrosomy
(PEG) and endoscopic or laparoscopic jejunostomy
tubes. We also offer patients the choice of the lowprofile feeding tubes (MicKey buttons). Also for complex
patients, surgical endoscopic experience is available in
endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
and endoscopic stenting when necessary for obstructing
malignant lesions of foregut and colon.
UH Case Medical Center (Cleveland)
eated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for
H
advanced gastrointestinal malignancies along with
cytoreductive surgery.
UH Geneva Medical Center
P er-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for dysphagia due
to achalasia, diffuse esophageal spasm and nutcracker
esophagus. A procedure to restore swallowing function,
done without a skin incision, it is of particular benefit to
patients with prior esophageal or gastric surgical repair,
or the morbidly obese.

UH is one of a few institutions in the U.S. to have a team
that handles extremely complex patients with intestinal
failure, which affects about 1,700 people a year in the
U.S. We receive referrals from across the nation and
around the world. Our physicians coordinate care to
provide multidisciplinary plans for patients, from surgical
intervention and reconstructive procedures to wound
care and long-term management strategies. Our team
includes surgeons, dietitians, wound specialists and
social work support.

S urgical management for severe gastroesophageal
reflux disease (GERD) that can no longer effectively
be managed with medications. We have one of the
most experienced surgical teams to address both simple
reflux and complex hiatal and paraesophageal hernias.
Newer endoscopic and laparoscopic techniques for
reflux are also available such as the LINX® Reflux
Management System.
INTESTINAL FAILURE UNIT:
E ndoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for complete
removal of a lesion as one specimen (can range from
1 cm to 5 cm) for analysis and cancer staging, opposed
to a piecemeal approach of endoscopic mucosal
resection. ESD is ideal for nodular or elevated lesions
and there is minimal discomfort for patients.

HEPATOBILIARY AND TRANSPLANT SURGERY TEAM
Hepatobiliary and
Transplant Surgery
Our team of highly skilled surgeons collaborates with multidisciplinary
teams of medical oncologists, hepatologists, gastroenterologists,
interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nurse practitioners,
mental health providers and pathologists to care for patients with a
wide spectrum of benign and malignant diseases of the liver, bile ducts,
gallbladder, pancreas and spleen.
We have expertise in liver cancer, bile
duct cancer, gallbladder cancer and
tumors that metastasize in the liver.
Complete surgical resection with
curative intent is usually the best
treatment option for patients with
liver cell cancer and metastatic colon
cancer. Patients can receive immediate

THORACIC AND ESOPHAGEAL SURGERY TEAM
Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery
Cancer patients benefit from a distinctively collaborative care approach involving medical
oncologists, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists and gastroenterologists within the
renowned UH Seidman Cancer Center. Multidisciplinary Tumor Boards in lung and
esophageal cancer assure patients have access to the latest and most advanced cancer
care protocols and clinical trials.
MINIMALLY INVASIVE ESOPHAGECTOMY
Surgery is the primary curative modality in patients with resectable
esophageal cancer. Conventional esophagectomy has been associated
with significant morbidity and mortality. UH is among a select group of
institutions performing minimally invasive esophagectomy. This innovative
procedure consists of complete dissection of the esophagus and all nodal
tissue in the chest by thoracoscopy, avoiding thoracotomy. Laparoscopy
can be used to avoid laparotomy. The anastomosis is placed either in
the neck or the chest. Most patients experience less pain, fewer wound
complications, less blood loss and a quicker return to normal activity.
Oncologic outcomes are similar or better to open esophagectomy.

SUPERIOR OUTCOMES:
Our surgical outcomes (three-year period) consistently exceed national
performance benchmarks, as well as those of most large academic
medical centers, both in terms of lower postoperative mortality and
shorter lengths of stay (LOS) for esophagectomy: 0% mortality and
8 days median LOS (national averages* are 3.1% and10 days).
