Multidisciplinary Tumor Boards in lung and esophageal cancer assure patients have access to the latest and most advanced cancer care protocols and clinical trials. MINIMALLY INVASIVE ESOPHAGECTOMY Surgery is the primary curative modality in patients with resectable esophageal cancer. Conventional esophagectomy has been associated with significant morbidity and mortality. UH is among a select group of institutions performing minimally invasive esophagectomy. This innovative procedure consists of complete dissection of the esophagus and all nodal tissue in the chest by thoracoscopy, avoiding thoracotomy. Laparoscopy can be used to avoid laparotomy. The anastomosis is placed either in the neck or the chest. Most patients experience less pain, fewer wound complications, less blood loss and a quicker return to normal activity. Oncologic outcomes are similar or better to open esophagectomy.
