TREATMENT PLAN FOR HEARTWORM DISEASE Day 0 is day of diagnosis. These medications/services are NOT included in the “Cost of Heartworm Treatment.” At this time we start 2 things: (1) Monthly ivermectin‐based heartworm prevention, such as Triheart Plus (2) 30 days of Doxycycline to kill Wohlbachia ssp, to help weaken adult heartworms. Dose is at least 5mg/kg by mouth every 12 hours. Day 30, continue monthly dose of heartworm prevention. No other special treatment needed. Day 60: (1) Give monthly dose of heartworm prevention (2) Morning drop‐off appointment at WellPet for several hours for Phase 1. During this visit you dog will receive 1 injection of Immiticide, which will start killing adult heartworms. We will observer for at least 2 hours after the injection to make sure there are not adverse reactions. (3) Prednisone will be sent home in a decreasing dosage for the next several weeks. This helps to decrease inflammation from the injection, as well as any inflammation caused by the heartworm die‐off. (4) Your dog MUST BE STRICTLY CONFINED for at least 2 months from this time. This means leash walks only, no dog parks or free runs. Try to avoid rough‐housing with other pets. Your dog will either need to spend 1 night in the clinic, or will need to be picked up in the afternoon and brought back the next morning. He/she will receive 2 Immiticide injections given 24 hours apart, then observed for adverse reactions. (2) Prednisone will again be sent home in the same dosage as previously. (3) Strict confinement must be continued for at least another 30 days. Continue monthly heartworm prevention every 30 days. Return to WellPet 6 months after starting treatment (day 180) to get another box of heartworm preventive, and get a heartworm test.
