JOB DESCRIPTION
PET CARE ATTENDANT
Reports to: Hospital Manager, Kennel Manager
Job Overview: This position entails several important aspects of our hospital: animal care and treatment,
client service and hospital cleanliness
Requirements of position: The ability to follow directions with and without supervision; the ability to lift
objects or pets of 30-40 lbs; the ability to sympathetically and patiently treat all animals; the ability to learn to
administer medications and recognize abnormal conditions; the ability to maintain cooperative relationships
with those contacted in the course of work; the ability to provide excellent client service.
Specific Duties:
Ø Animal Care and Treatment:
o The primary responsibility is to ensure that all patients are given the highest quality care
possible. To that end, responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
§ Clean and sanitize all cages, runs, wards and related areas as indicated on the hospital
maintenance schedule
§ Provide food and water to each pet as instructed by attending veterinarian or inpatient
nurse
§ Walk hospitalized and boarded dogs a minimum of 2-3 times daily
§ Perform boarding check-ins
· Responsible for obtaining the proper care instructions and contact information
from the owner on check-in
· Verifies that vaccinations are up-to-date in accordance with hospital policy
· Provides estimates for clients upon check-in getting help from nursing staff as
needed
§ Assists doctors and nurses with the administration of medications or with restraint
§ Properly record medications and other information into the medical record
§ Recognize, record and notify inpatient nursing staff of any unusual condition or
abnormal behavior exhibited by hospitalized or boarded patients.
§ Ensure that all patients are clean prior to discharge
§ Bathing pets as needed if groomer is not available
§ Perform kennel duties on Sundays as scheduled in rotation with veterinary assistants
Ø Hospital Cleanliness Responsibilities
o The primary duty is to maintain the hospital cleanliness and appearance. Our clients judge our
hospital by what they can easily see. This will include, but is not limited to:
§ Vacuuming and mopping floors every evening and then as needed during the day
§ Empty trash daily
§ Wash and fold laundry
§ Clean and stock bathrooms
§ Cleaning of grounds (parking areas and sidewalks, dog walking areas)
§ Change air conditioner filters monthly
o Maintain dog food inventory; ensure that retail areas are properly stocked

o Ensure that each pet is cared for with compassion and professionalism
o Bring patients to the front upon discharge and assist clients with getting pets and belongings to
their vehicle
o Ensure that no pet is discharged without having been checked for cleanliness and brushed out,
sprayed with cologne as needed
Personal Conduct:
Ø Adhere to all hospital policies and standards as written in the hospital policy manual
Ø Demonstrate initiative and teamwork in everyday duties by seeking other work to do during slow times,
assisting other employees within the practice and filling in for other employees as needed.
Ø Follow OSHA guidelines concerning safety and handling of hazardous materials
Ø Follow established hospital safety guidelines regarding radiographs, controlled drugs, animal handling
and the use of personal protective equipment
Controls Over Work: In accordance with Westgate Pet and Bird Hospital operating instructions, determine
care required in keeping with the individual needs and circumstances of animals; follow special instructions as
issued. Practitioners/animal health technicians provide specific instructions in giving medications, feeding
specific diets or following special sanitary procedures. Cleaning and maintenance to be performed in
accordance with daily, weekly and monthly checklists. Employee should exercise personal judgment to
achieve end result of quality patient care and client service.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to
successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable
individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Physical Effort: Often requires lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 40 lbs. Frequently requires
handling of materials up to 20 lbs. Additionally, handle dogs weighing up to 150 lbs. Frequently requires
repetitive motions (hands, i.e. typing). Often requires walking and/or standing for long periods. Frequently
works in a bent position. May be required to use strength or agility in capturing and restraining stronger, more
active animals.
Working Conditions:
Work is normally performed inside; some outside work is required; outside work
may result in short-term exposure to extreme temperatures; exposure to unpleasant odors and noises;
exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes; possible exposure to contagious diseases; possible exposure
to chemicals.
