What is a Pelvic Ultrasound (Sonogram)?
A pelvic ultrasound is an imaging procedure used to examine organs in the pelvis including the uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries,
cervix, and bladder. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves that reflect off of a body structure to form an image.
Pelvic Ultrasounds are Performed to:
• Assess health of pelvic organs
• Diagnose or evaluate endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, lesions or an ectopic pregnancy
• Evaluate response to fertility medications
• Diagnose bladder tumors or other urinary disorders
• Diagnose ovarian or uterine cancer
• Assess abnormal bleeding or menstrual pain
How is it Performed?
A clear water-based gel is applied to the area of the body being studied to help the transducer make smooth even contact with
the body and eliminate air pockets. The ultrasound technologist then presses the transducer against the skin and glides it over
the area of interest. The ultrasound examination is usually completed within 30 minutes to an hour.
How to Prepare
A full bladder is necessary to get good ultrasound image. First empty your bladder, then drink 32 ounces of water (four/8 ounce
glasses). Finish drinking water one hour before your exam. Do not urinate until you have been advised by the technologist to do
so. While it is slightly uncomfortable to have a full bladder, it helps the technologist to better visualize the pelvic organs.
Tell your doctor if you have had a barium enema or a series of Upper GI (gastrointestinal) tests within the past two days. Barium
remains in the intestines and can interfere with the ultrasound test.
