Section 2: An additional 24 hours of continuing education activity is required
by NREMT. Along with CPR and ACLS, (or their) equivalents are required for
re-registration.
*CCEMTP will fulfill 24 hours of additional hours for Section II.
The core CCEMTProgram is at minimum 100+ hours in length with up to 17.5
hours of additional modules and optional skills stations and lectures.
You will earn 100 hours of contact hours from UMBC thru CECBEMS.

at the end of your course, suitable for National Registry purposes.)
UMBC attests that this continuing education activity meets the National
Registry 2004 guidelines for re-registration.

National Registry Transition Information
Why do I have to take a transition course to recertify?
The Department of Transportation National Standard Curriculum is no longer being
used, and has been replaced by the National Scope of Practice. Every level of EMS
practice had new content added to its respective curriculum. In order to ensure that
every provider has the appropriate knowledge of this new content, the NREMT is
requiring proof of successful completion of a State approved transition/Refresher

How many hours are in the transition course?
This will vary on a state-to-state basis. For additional information, please contact
your State EMS Office.
Can I count those hours toward my recertification requirements?
Yes. Any hours contained in the transition course may be applied to the "Refresher"
section or "Continuing Education" section of the recertification.
How long will I have to complete a transition course?
First Responder to EMR
2 recertification cycles (4 years - complete by Sept. 30,
2015/2016)
EMT-Basic to EMT
2 recertification cycles (4 years - complete by Mar. 31,
2015/2016)
Intermediate/85 to AEMT
2 recertification cycles (4 years - complete by Mar. 31,
2015/2016*^)

^Candidates who obtain their FIRST I/85 certification between July 2012 and
March 31, 2013 have until March 31, 2017 to complete a state approved transition
and successful completion of the AEMT cognitive examination.
Does that mean I need to complete two transition courses?
No. You only need to complete the transition course one time.
What happens if I do not successfully complete a transition course within my time
period?
If you submit an acceptable recertification application but fail to submit proof of a
transition course within your transition period, (see above) you will automatically
be recertified at the next-lowest level. For example, if you are an EMT-Basic and
submit your completed recertification materials but fail to provide proof of a
transition course, you will be issued a certification at the EMR level.
NREMT's Transition Policy
The NREMT Board of Directors is committed to implementation of the EMS Education Agenda
for the Future: A Systems Approach. Included within this agenda is the National EMS Scope of
Practice Model. Therefore, in order for NREMTs to maintain National EMS Certification, as
outlined in the EMS Education Agenda for the Future, all NREMTs must meet the minimum
requirements of knowledge and skills outlined in the National EMS Scope of Practice Model.
Transition dates and processes which certified EMS providers must follow to obtain National
EMS Certification vary according to the level of EMS provider and are outlined below.

Paramedic
All NREMT-Paramedics who have expiration dates of March 31, 2011 or March 31, 2012 have
two registration cycles (four years) to complete a state approved Emergency Medical
Technician-Paramedic to Paramedic transition course in order to be eligible for National EMS
Certification as a Paramedic (NRP).

Completion of a transition course that is state approved must be validated by attending
and successfully completing a course that issues a certificate that has within its title:
o NREMT-Paramedic's name
transition course completion date
The certificate must contain the following statement: "has completed a state
approved EMT-Paramedic to Paramedic transition course."
o name of the sponsoring agency
o signature of the individual responsible for the training
In order to transition to the Paramedic level, the NREMT-Paramedic is not required to
complete National EMS Certification Examinations.
NREMT-Paramedics who submit an acceptable recertification application but do not
include successful completion of a state-approved transition course from EMTParamedics to Paramedic will be issued National EMS Certification as an Advanced
Emergency Medical Technician (NRAEMT) upon reaching their expiration date of
March 31, 2016 or 2017.
