CNAs on the path to opportunity
At first, Kiela Putnam didn’t choose a career in healthcare. It chose her.
The 23-year-old from Coeur d’Alene was visiting a loved one in the hospital in 2015 when a
doctor observed her caring nature. He encouraged her to look into the healthcare field.
“I had never thought of getting into healthcare. I was a stay-at-home mom at the time, so
caring for others’ needs was second nature,” Putnam said.
Putnam answered the call and enrolled in the NIC Workforce Training Center’s Certified
Nursing Assistant program in January 2016. She graduated at the top of her class in
February, and within three days of graduating, she obtained a position at Kootenai Health,
working as a CNA.
Kootenai Health CNA Kiela Putnam works
with a patient on the fourth floor of the
hospital’s new wing. CNA jobs are often
the first step for those who want to enter a
rapidly growing field with opportunity
for advancement.
“Tammy Pilgrim was my instructor and she saw something in me that I didn’t. She gave me the
confidence to be me and to succeed. This was the first time I enjoyed learning. I was so happy
to have found something I enjoyed that I could also succeed in,” Putnam said. “I started looking
at available CNA jobs in the area and was blown away by the amount of postings.”
Healthcare occupations are in high demand in North Idaho and will be for years to come. An
estimated 300 new CNA positions will open in North Idaho by 2022 due to the expansion
of healthcare services, according to the Idaho Department of Labor. CNAs are poised to
take advantage of the increase in opportunities by being the first step on the path to several
healthcare careers. The NIC Workforce Training Center offers advanced courses in Mental
Health, Restorative, and Patient Care Coordinator certifications, which all lead to industryrecognized credentials that local employers value. The CNA program attracts pre-nursing and pre-med students looking to gain
valuable clinical employment experience along with those exploring new careers in a high-demand occupation.
“Becoming a CNA is the first step to discovering so many open doors. There are always classes to take your certification to the next
level: mental health assistant, physical therapist assistant, nursing, and so much more. I plan to continue as a CNA at the hospital
and one day continue on to become a registered nurse,” Putnam said.

Succession Planning
Succession planning is a critical and often
neglected part of starting, owning, and transitioning your small business. The goal of
succession planning is to preserve the value of
what you have created with your hard work and
provide an orderly transition of the business
based on how you–the entrepreneur–want
the transition to occur. In this course, we will
discuss the road blocks to getting started, the
five basic elements of a solid succession plan,
and how to get started toward the completion
of your own succession plan. We will also work
together on some real-life case studies to help
you start thinking objectively about the future.
Additionally, participants will receive a succession planning checklist that will help you take
the first steps toward the completion of a plan.
This topic is important to both established
businesses and business start-ups. No matter
what stage of development, a succession plan
is critically important to preserving wealth and
relationships.
