Dr. Slonkosky offers a wide

gynecological healthcare services
for women of all ages including:
bioidentical hormone
supplementation; tubal reversals;
hysterectomies; fibroid removal;
and well-woman exams not requiring contraception. She
supports the Creighton Model FertilityCare™ System and
other Natural Family Planning (NFP) methods for
achieving or avoiding pregnancy.
Dr. Slonkosky recently completed a medical and
surgical fellowship in NaPro Technology through the
Pope Paul VI Institute-Creighton University in Omaha,
Nebraska. She is one of only eight physicians in the
United States with this special surgical training.
NaPro Technology (Natural Procreative) provides
patients with medical and surgical solutions for
infertility and other gynecological problems such as:
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (POS); severe PMS;
endometriosis; painful periods; abnormal bleeding; and
postpartum depression.
Originally from the Michigan area, Dr. Slonkosky
received her medical degree from Michigan State
University College of Human Medicine and completed
her residency at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in St.
Louis, Mo. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from
the University of Notre Dame.
Dr. Slonkosky and her husband, Dr. Philip
Slonkosky, pediatric dentist, reside in Minster.

recently joined the Orthopedic Associates of
Southwestern Ohio practice and will be seeing patients
out of their Sidney office located on
the Wilson Memorial campus,
medical building B.
Prior to joining the OASWO
practice, Dr. Weber completed a
Level 1 orthopedic trauma fellowship
with OrthoIndy in Indianapolis. With
his specialized training, Dr. Weber
sees and treats patients with
complex fractures; including the
upper extremity and lower extremity and other bones
and joints, isolated fractures/dislocations, and
poly-trauma, or multiple traumatic injuries. He also
provides general orthopedic care including hip and knee
replacements, rotator cuff repair and sports medicine
care.
Dr. Weber earned his medical degree from the
Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine in
Athens, Ohio. He completed his residency and internship
in orthopedic surgery at Grandview Hospital Medical
Center in Dayton. Dr. Weber holds a Master of Science
degree in sports healthcare from Kirksville College of
Osteopathic Medicine - Arizona School of Health
Sciences, Phoeniz, Az. He also earned a Bachelor of
Science degree in sports medicine from Marietta College,
Marietta, Oh.
Dr. Weber is a certified athletic trainer (ATC) and
has served as the resident physician and athletic trainer
for area high schools. He also served as the assistant
athletic trainer for the Pittsburgh Steelers for three years.
With his sports medicine experience, Dr. Weber will work
closely with Dr. Heckler and the Wilson Memorial Sports
Medicine team.

CARMEN BOWLING NAMED NEW
BIRTH CENTER DIRECTOR
C
armen Bowling, RN, MSN, recently joined the
management team at Wilson Memorial as the new
director of the Copeland-Emerson Family Birth Center.
Carmen comes to
Wilson Memorial from The
Ohio State University Medical
Center in Columbus where she
served as the nurse manager
for the Head and Neck Cancer
Clinic as well as the Voice and
Swallow Disorders Clinic. She
has extensive experience in the
field of obstetrics and served
as clinical nurse manager for
the labor and delivery unit at Good Samaritan
Hospital in Dayton and also for the University Hospital
Medical Center in Cincinnati.
Carmen holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing
(BSN) degree and a Master of Science in Nursing
(MSN) degree from Wright State University (WSU).
She has served as an adjunct faculty member at WSU
School of Nursing in specialty areas of
Medical-Surgical, Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Carmen says “I am so blessed to have had the
opportunity to be involved with the entire spectrum
of life in my nursing career, working in labor and
delivery as well as cancer treatment clinics. Now I am
back to a birth center setting which is my preferred
work environment. The close family atmosphere
among the staff at Wilson Memorial has made me feel
welcome and comfortable from the first day I started.”
Despite her busy schedule, Carmen remains
active. She just recently participated in the second
annual Pelotonia cycling event. It is a grassroots bike
tour with one goal: to end cancer. Carmen cycled 180
miles starting in Columbus and riding to Athens, Ohio
and then back to Columbus where she finished. The
Pelotonia event raises money for cancer research at
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer
Center - James Cancer Hospital.
Carmen and her children reside in Oakwood.
She has a son, Calvin, who is currently a senior at
Bowling Green State University and twin daughters,
Gabriella and Isabella, who are freshmen at
Springboro High School.

PROGRAMS
Wilson Memorial Sports Medicine (WMSM) is the
official sports medicine provider for four Shelby County
schools: Sidney High School, Lehman Catholic High
School, Fort Loramie High School and Anna High School.
WMSM provides full time athletic training coverage for
each of the school’s athletic programs and access to the
hospital’s comprehensive orthopedic and sports
medicine services.
Volunteering their time to help ensure the health
and safety of our student athletes, are four Wilson

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH UNIT MAKES A
DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF SENIORS
The Behavioral Health Unit (BHU) at Wilson Memorial
provides the older adult an inpatient experience for
emotional, behavioral or psychiatric problems in a
residential type setting. The BHU is the only unit in the
greater Dayton area geared toward the older adult,
patients 55 years of age and older. Referral patients are
accepted within a nine county radius.
“Our specialty is short-term inpatient treatment
for seniors, assisting them with their psychosocial,
emotional and physical needs which are unique to their
specific age group,” said Sherri Collins, BHU director.
“Our skilled interdisciplinary team of healthcare
professionals, under the direction of a psychiatrist,
provide intensive intervention in a structured
therapeutic environment with the ultimate goal of
returning the patient to their home or nursing facility
with an enhanced quality of life.”
Some symptoms that may indicate the need for
treatment at Wilson's BHU include: depression; suicidal
thoughts; apathy; extreme sadness; marked personality
changes; numerous unexplained physical ailments or
changes in eating or sleeping patterns; excessive fears,
anxieties or suspiciousness; hallucinations or hearing
voices; abuse of medications or numerous
prescriptions; inability to cope with daily living;
combative or aggressive behavior; or withdrawal from
family and friends.

WMH AND SIDNEY CARDIOLOGY GO
RED!
On Saturday, September 18, Wilson Memorial Hospital
and Sidney Cardiology will participate in the Go Red
Goes North event at Edison Community College in
Piqua. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Go Red Goes North event is designed to
create an inspirational and informative atmosphere,
which will encourage women in communities across
America to become champions of health. During the
event, guests will have the opportunity to participate in
free health screenings, as well as interact with
healthcare professionals about such topics as blood
pressure, cholesterol, fitness and nutrition and stroke
prevention. Participants can also take advantage of chair
massages, mini-makeovers, and heart healthy
refreshments. Representatives from Wilson Memorial’s
Cardiopulmonary Services will be present as well as Dr.
Harvey Hahn with Sidney Cardiology. Dr. Hahn will
present a breakout session, “Life Support for YOUR
Lifestyle.” Come listen as he provides heart healthy
information for women who are on the go and enjoying
life!
WILSON MEMORIAL’S LAB HITS THE
ROAD!
I
n an effort to gain valuable business and provide
convenient laboratory services to patients as well as
physicians, Wilson Memorial recently instituted a courier
service for all Wilson Care, Inc. (WCI) physician offices.
The courier is responsible for coordinating and
monitoring lab specimens collected in all WCI offices and
delivering them to the hospital lab for testing. The
courier collects lab specimens two times a day offering
patients and physicians the benefit of timely same day
results on standard lab tests versus next day results when
outsourced.

ANNUAL LIGHT UP A LIFE SET FOR
OCTOBER 24
W
ilson Hospice Care’s annual community memorial
service, Light Up A Life, will be held on Sunday, October
24, at the Cameo Theater located in the Sidney-Shelby
County Senior Center. Doors open at 1 p.m. Light Up A
Life is a community memorial service, not just for hospice
patients, but for everyone in the community, and
everyone is welcome to attend. The theme for this year’s
program is, “Stand By Me.”

EMILY WILDING AWARDED PHYSICIAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Emily Wilding was recently awarded the 2010 Physician Memorial Scholarship by the medical staff of Wilson
Memorial. Established following the death of Dr. Bruce Urbanc in 2008, the scholarship is a joint effort of the Wilson
Memorial Medical Staff and Wilson Memorial Hospital. Emily is the second recipient of the $2,000 scholarship,
which is open to students from Shelby County who are already enrolled in medical school.
Emily is in her second year of medical school at The Ohio State University. She earned a Bachelor of Science
degree in May of 2009 from Xavier University. Emily is a 2005 graduate of Lehman Catholic High School. The daughter of Susan and John Wilding, Emily won’t be the the first doctor in her family. Her dad is an opthamologist at
Wilson Memorial.
