Their perceptions are based on what is said and done by each and every person. We use the acronym REACH to help remember our customer service standards: •Showing Respect •Exceeding other’s expectations •Showing Accountability and teamwork •Using good Communication skills •Showing Hospitality Holy Cross Hospital Student Orientation Safety Great patient care happens in a safe environment. We educate all students, employees, volunteers and physicians on safety to ensure that we are able to maintain that safe environment. The following slides will provide you with information on: • Fire safety • Hazardous Materials • Emergency Codes • Disaster Plans • Infection Control • Injury Prevention • Violent Behavior and Workplace Harassment Holy Cross Hospital Student Orientation Fire Safety The most important thing you can do about fire safety is to be prepared. •Know the evacuation plan for your area – it should be posted near your work area. Know at least two exit routes out of the unit and out of the hospital. •Know the location of the fire alarm pull stations in your work area. •Know the location and type of all fire extinguishers in your work area. •Pull the alarm box and call extension 211 if you see a fire. •The following pages will explain the acronyms we use to remember how to stay safe in the event of a fire and the types of fire extinguishers. Holy Cross Hospital Student Orientation Fire Safety - RACE In the event of a fire, RACE! •Rescue people in immediate danger. •Sound the Alarm. (Pull alarm; Call the operator at extension #211; Confirm location.) •Contain the fire. (Close all doors.) •Extinguish. (Use good judgment when deciding to fight a fire.) Holy Cross Hospital Student Orientation Fire Safety - PASS To use a fire extinguisher, remember PASS (Stand 6-8 feet from the fire.) •Pull the pin. (Plastic or metal seal will break.) •Aim the extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire. •Squeeze the operating lever and handle together. •Sweep the nozzle back and forth. Holy Cross Hospital Student Orientation Types of Fire Extinguishers Every fire extinguisher has a label on the front identifying what type of extinguisher it is and what types of fire it will work on. Most areas in the hospital have multipurpose dry chemical fire extinguishers, which will extinguish all types of fires. Here are the three categories of fires and what type of extinguisher to use: Combustible fires (wood, paper, cloth): Use water or multi-purpose dry chemical extinguishers. Flammable liquid or gas fires: Use CO2 or multi-purpose dry chemical extinguishers. NOTE: Do not extinguish a flammable gas fire until the source is turned off. Electrical Fires (electronic equipment): Use CO2 or multi-purpose dry chemical extinguishers. Holy Cross Hospital Student Orientation Hazardous Materials If you suspect a hazardous chemical spill or have a question about a chemical, ask a HCH staff member. Staff have access to information about chemicals called Materials Safety Data Sheets that provide detailed information about every chemical used in the hospital. It is important to remember never to touch or clean up spilled liquid with bare hands. If you do have a chemical exposure on your skin or eyes, flush with water for 10 minutes and seek treatment. Holy Cross Hospital Student Orientation Infection Control – Standard Precautions • Standard precautions are a method of treating patients that assumes that everyone has the potential for carrying a blood borne organism such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or HIV. • Standard Precautions mean that you must wear personal protective equipment (gloves, masks, goggles, gowns-as needed) when there is the potential for you to be in contact with body substances from another person. Holy Cross Hospital Student Orientation Infection Control - Hand Washing • The single most important practice in the prevention of infection in patients and in healthcare workers is proper hand washing. • Use waterless, alcohol based hand sanitizers to clean hands when there is no visible soilage. • If hands are visibly soiled, wash hands with soap and water for at least 15 seconds to remove bacteria. • If your patient has Clostridium difficile disease, use soap and water to wash hands as the alcohol cannot penetrate the spore phase of the organism. • Do not wear artificial nails (including the new "gel" nails) when in direct contact with patients, their food, medications, and sterile equipment. Studies have shown that artificial nails cause outbreaks in healthcare settings. • We are now using the phrase "Foam In, Foam Out" to help us remember to sanitize our hands every time we enter and exit a patient space. Holy Cross Hospital Student Orientation Infection Control – General Guidelines • All students are expected to observe Standard Precautions. • Do not come to work with a fever, uncontrolled cough, uncontrolled diarrhea, vomiting, a draining wound or an undiagnosed rash. • Follow isolation precautions listed on isolation signs on patient room doors. • Be aware of Biohazard Signs (with orange and black markings) around the hospital as these indicate where blood or body fluids may be encountered. • No eating or drinking in patient care areas. • Never store clean and dirty equipment together. • Protect yourself from actively coughing patients by giving the patients tissues to cover their mouth and wearing a mask if you must be within three feet of a patient before a diagnosis is made. • Seasonal influenza vaccine is required for all employees, clinical staff, students outside vendors, etc. as this is considered an important patient safety measure. Holy Cross Hospital Student Orientation Hospital Emergency Codes Occasionally, you will hear a code called via our overhead paging system. If you hear a code and have questions about what you need to do next, ask a staff person in your area. Here is what the codes are and what they mean: Code "Yellow” Disaster Code "Gold" Bomb Threat Code "Pink-Infant" Infant Security Alert Code “Pink Child” Child Security Alert Code "Red" Fire Code "F” Watch Fire Alarm System Not Operating (Fire Watch in Effect) Code “A" Nurse Call System Inoperable (includes Code Blue button) Code Blue-Adult Cardiac Pulmonary Arrest Adult Code Blue-Maternal Maternal code anywhere in the hospital Code Blue-Child Pediatric code anywhere in the hospital Code "Green" Request for assistance for disruptive patients/visitors staff Holy Cross Hospital Student Orientation Evacuation Procedure If evacuation is determined to be necessary by Executive Administration or the Fire Department, follow the posted evacuation plan for your area.
