First trimester surgical procedures (D&C)
You should expect to spend at least three to four hours
at the Center on the day of your visit. When you first
arrive you will have an ultrasound, and we will take
a blood sample to determine your blood type and to
make sure you are not anemic.
You will have the option to take a medicine that will
help you to relax and/or a pain reliever in addition
to receiving a local anesthetic. The actual surgical
procedure will only take between 10-15 minutes and
most women spend about 30-minutes recovering
before leaving.
Surgical procedures beyond 14-weeks (D&E)
The Center for Reproductive Health provides surgical
abortion procedures for women who need to have the
procedure for their own medical reasons, or because
the pregnancy is complicated by birth defects.
This type of procedure requires at least three visits to
the Center. The first visit is a preoperative evaluation. An
ultrasound may be repeated at this visit. You will meet
with the doctors performing the procedure, and they will
answer your questions.
The D&E procedure will be done the following day at
the University of Illinois Hospital. You will be sedated
or asleep for the procedure so it is very important that
you have someone to take you home. You should not
eat, drink or chew gum for 8-hours before you are
scheduled to arrive at the hospital.
Instructions for your visit:
• Please do not bring children to the
appointment
• Eat a light meal before coming to your visit
• Do not take aspirin or drink alcohol for
24-hours before your visit
• Wear a comfortable two-piece outfit
• If you are planning to have a surgical
procedure, take 800 milligrams of Ibuprofen
before coming to your appointment
• If you would like to take medication to help
you relax prior to the procedure, you must
have an adult with you to accompany you
home

Information about your procedure
Medical management of miscarriage and
medicationabortion
Unlike a surgical procedure, the use of
medications for miscarriage and a medication
abortion takes place in the privacy of your home
after you take a combination of medications. This
type of procedures requires two separate visits to
the Center. Like a surgical procedure, you will have
an ultrasound and we will take a blood sample to
determine your blood type and to make sure you
are not anemic.
You will be given medications that will cause you
to pass the pregnancy at home. You will have
cramping and bleeding within several hours after
taking the medication. We will give you pain
medication to help with the pain.
You must return to the Center one week after your
first visit to make sure that the medical procedure
is complete.
