Research Assistant Professor - Joint Appointment with Family Medicine Research Division, School of Medicine, KU Medical Center Job Description: Conduct health communication and public health research and participate in community public health seminars and other continuing education activities with School of Medicine faculty and graduate students. Research Interests: Conducting health communication research that includes examining religiosity and spirituality as socio-cultural factors in message design that may impact health decision making and behavior; also looking at how health campaigns can be improved through public relations, advertising and marketing efforts to effectively target minority populations about cancer. Courses Taught: Research and Writing – Foundational course that introduces the student to researching, gathering, analyzing and reporting news and information. Special Topics in Journalism – Special topics course that surveyed the influence of religion on media practice. Diversity of the Media – This is a course that looks at how the mass media shapes perspectives in a multicultural society, what diversity is and how it relates to the media. The course also challenges the student to think critically about the roles the media play in challenging or reinforcing stereotypes. Principles of Public Relations – The course is an introduction to the basic concepts and principles of public relations as well as theory and techniques. The class also is the foundation course for a strong grounding in public relations. Marketing and Media Research – This is a course that challenges the student to conduct, analyze and apply research to develop strategy and guide decisions. In addition to studying research methods, students develop critical-thinking skills by defining research problems and producing insightful solutions.
