The Story Of America’s Mounted Riders
From the horse-mounted regiments that birthed the American nation, to the armored machines
paving the front lines, cavalry units have changed warfare and the outcomes of battles for over 200
years in the United States. Learn about their traditions and legacy in this exciting 5-part series
chronicling one of the most important branches of the U.S. military, the Cavalry.
This fascinating documentary examines the cavalry's history, beginning with the first cavalries
assembled by the Greeks and their historical importance, leading to the formation of the first
regiments in the New World that fought for independence and won the Civil War.
The mounted and therefore mobile arms were of great importance when the United States expanded
and pushed into new territories. A close look is taken at Wounded Knee, the Battle of the Little
Bighorn, and the creation of the Buffalo Soldiers.
New innovations created a new horse which changed the world and helped the fight of Teddy
Roosevelt as he led troops into Cuba. The battlefield began to transform itself. From the last battle
fought on horses in World War II, to the air cavalry and regiments that fought in Vietnam, this series
ends with a look at modern military developments and the new perception of the cavalry at the end of
the 20th century.
