INDONESIA ROCKS with Kua Etnika Live in Concert Indonesia’s finest music ensemble - Kua Etnika tour Australia for the first time From the lush tropical islands of the Indonesian archipelago, with its incredibly rich and diverse cultural landscape comes Indonesia’s most popular and prolific gamelan (ensemble), Kua Etnika, performing in Indonesia Rocks at the Arts Centre, Fairfax Studio, on Sunday 12 August. The 13-piece gamelan, featuring front man Djaduk Ferianto, will fill you with vivid imagery of the fabled spice islands as they effortlessly fuse traditional and contemporary Indonesian music forms into ethereal soundscapes creating the finest global music from our region. Balinese, Javanese, Kalimantan, jazz, reggae and many other influences are combined in a concert that truly represents the vibrant music and arts scene of Indonesian society today. Described as a “big band” sound, atmospheric Indonesian string, wind and percussion instruments and the pulsating bonang (a collection of tuned deep gongs) are infused with guitars, violins and keyboards creating intensely complex rhythms. With a background in traditional music the ensemble use the strengths of a variety of specific regional Indonesian sounds, reinterpret it into new forms with wider room for appreciation, while retaining the original cultural nuances of the music. Front man and composer Djaduk Ferianto draws on his considerable mastery of diverse Indonesian music and theatrical traditions to create Kua Etnika’s unique sound. Djaduk has established several music and theatre groups, toured throughout Europe, North America and Asia, and has received recognition and awards of excellence for his work. Kua Etnika take audiences on a wonderfully rich and culturally diverse journey, that breaks down the stereotyped perception of contemporary Indonesian society, revealing an incredible music culture that exists right on Australia’s door step. Before the show there will be cultural displays from Indonesia and showcase performances.
