Chamber Choir Megaron was founded in October 2003 on the initiative of Damijan
Močnik, composer and conductor, after several years of its singers already performing
together in different groups and predominantly in individual projects. The choir
represents the peak of the choir pyramid in St. Stanislav's institution as it mainly unites
students who previously received music education in five choirs of The Diocesan
Classical Gymnasium.
After 12 years of work, Chamber Choir Megaron has evolved into an excellent choir
performing regularly in Slovenia as well as in Austria, Germany, Belgium, The
Netherlands, Slovakia, Poland and Canada, and thus earning its good reputation at
home as well as abroad.
The choir is characterized by a distinguishing, rich sound and inspiring interpretations
of music from different stylistic periods. It has been awarded at numerous prestigious
national as well as international choral competitions. In 2005, at choral competition
»Naša pesem« in Maribor, it won a golden medal and was also presented with a
special award for the best choir taking part in the competition for the first time. Two
years later (2007), also in Maribor, the choir was awarded a silver medal. In 2010, the
choir again competed in Maribor, »Naša pesem«, and was awarded a golden medal,
while in June the same year it participated in choral competition KATHAUMWIX in
Powell River (Canada) and won the second place in mixed choirs category and the
first place in folk music category. Finally, in 2012, the choir won a golden medal in
Maribor, being the best mixed choir as well as an absolute winner of the competition,
and received a special prize for the best performance of a romantic period composition.
Chamber Choir Megaron regularly collaborates with renowned orchestras (The Munich
Symphony Orchestra, The RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra, The Slovenian
Philharmonic Orchestra), and conductors (David de Villier, Jacek M. Blasczyk, Martina
Batič, En Shao, Valerij Gergiev) and participates in challenging vocal-instrumental
projects such as W. A. Mozart: Krönungsmesse, B. Britten: The World of The Spirit, G.
Faure: Requiem, F. Poulenc: Stabat Mater, D. Močnik: Passio Domini nostri Jesu
Christi secundum Joannem, G. Mahler: The Symphony No. 8 (»Symphony of a
Thousand«), J. Brahms – Ein Deutsches Requiem, to mention but a few.
In February 2012, the choir collaborated with a recognized Swedish conductor Robert
Sund, giving two concerts, which received a great deal of public attention.
October 2013: concert tour in Canada and USA – 10 concerts: Toronto, Niagara on
the Lake (international festival), Bethlehem, Salisbury, Annapolis and Washington. The
choir was invited by World Artist Experience Foundation.
CV - Damijan Močnik, conductor
Damijan Močnik, born in 1967. He completed his musical studies (composition)
at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana in 1991. He developed his craft by studying
abroad, which included coaching with Swedish conductor Eric Ericson.
Since 1993, Močnik has been the choral conductor and music director at the
Diocesan Classical Gymnasium in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and since 2000, the artistic
director of all musical activities at the St. Stanislaus Institution in Ljubljana. Damijan is
the conductor for several choirs, and has won several awards at national and
international choral competitions.
His tenure as composer-in-residence in 2006, at the Bavarian Musikakademie
in Marktoberdorf, resulted in a new score: “IM-MORALIA” (SSAATTBB). And he was
invited to be the leader of the Composer's Conducting workshop at the Europa Cantat
2006 in Mainz, Germany. In 2007 (October-November), he was invited to Washington
in the United States. He performed a concert of his compositions on Orcas Island with
their choir and orchestra. He gave lectures about his composing activities in Seattle at
the University of Washington and at Seattle Pacific University, where he conducted
eight of his choral compositions. In 2010 his Passio Domini nostri Jesu Christi
secundum Joannem for soloists, mixed choir and symphonic orchestra was premiered
in Ljubljana. In December 2011 Močnik was invited again to United States, this time
he was present at the premiere of his Christmas cantata Venit lumen and he gave
lectures at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. A CD of Močnik's Advent music,
Adventus Domini nostri Jesu Christi, was also published in December 2011.
In December 2012 Močnik was invited to Taipei to work with Taipei Male in Youth Choir
as guest composer and conductor.
Močnik’s compositional efforts are mainly devoted to the human voice, but he
has also composed instrumental pieces. Močnik’s musical speech finds its inspiration
in selected texts, and is grounded in rhythmic and melodic stimuli. The melodic
narration evolves as a solid form framed in diverse polyphone, polytonal and
polychordal structure. Močnik's compositions were performed all over the world and
thrills musicians and audiences around the world with its directness, and numerous
dramatical turns with rich, exceptional and mysterious sonorities.
