Karine Georgian, Cello
Karine Georgian continues to bring her wealth of experience
performing around the world to the concert platform, having appeared
with many of the leading orchestras and conductors of our time. Her
repertoire encompasses more than forty concertos and a huge range
of instrumental and chamber music. She has been associated with
leading composers of our day, several of whom have written works for
her. They include Alfred Schnittke (Hymn No. 4), Tigran Mansurian
(Cello Concerto No. 2), Alexander Goehr (Cello Sonata, Op. 45), Dmitri
Smirnov (Cello Concerto, premiered with the BBC Philharmonic in
1996), Howard Skempton, and Elena Firsova (Chamber Concerto No.
5). Soon after taking the First and Gold Medal of the Tchaikovsky
International Competition in Moscow Karine Georgian appeared in
New York's Carnegie Hall performing Khachaturian's Cello Concerto
with the Chicago Symphony conducted by the composer, and a little
later in Chicago gave with the same forces the US premiere of
Khachaturian's Cello Rhapsody. She also gave the US premiere of
Schnittke's First Cello Concerto in Carnegie Hall with the American
Symphony Orchestra, and the Australian premiere of Britten's Cello
Symphony with the Sydney Symphony. Karine Georgian is a founder
member of the London Soloists Ensemble, which has just completed
its second season as Associate Ensemble of St. John's Smith Square
in London. Their recording for Naxos of the two piano quintets by
Vaughan Williams was released in May last year to widespread critical
acclaim. Last December Karine Georgian was honoured by the award
of an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Northern College of Music in
Manchester.
