(BOSTON) The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA) continues its adventurous New Music
Now series with the Boston premiere of Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris’ A Conduction® with New
England Conservatory, on Friday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m., in the Barbara Lee Family Foundation
Theater (100 Northern Ave., Boston). General admission tickets are $20, $18 for members and

Butch Morris, a leading innovator in the confluence of jazz, new music, improvisation and
contemporary classical music, redefines the roles of composer, conductor, arranger, and
performer. He is recognized internationally as the principal theorist and practitioner in the
evolution of Conduction®, a type of structured free improvisation where he directs and conducts
an improvising ensemble. In this structured yet free improvisation, Morris conducts an
ensemble of 30+ musicians from the classical, jazz, and contemporary music departments at
New England conservatory, where he will be in residence at the end of this month.

Lawrence D. “Butch” Morris’ work includes television, film, theatre, dance, radio,
interdisciplinary performance based collaborations and concert and recording settings. As a
composer he in known most notably for the development and evolution of Conduction,
conducted improvisation and interpretation that transcend culture and geography to present a
new social-logic to the language of music. He has assembled over 100 ensembles for
performance in 14 countries. In 1999, the Bell Atlantic-Jazz Awards nominated him composer of
the year and creative musician of the year. Morris also develops interdisciplinary projects with
choreographers such as Min Tanaka, with visual artists such as David Hammons, with writers
such as Ntozake Shange, and with theatre artists such as The Wooster Group. He has worked
with countless musicians/composers including Alice Coltrane, Gil Evans, Philly Joe Jones, Cecil
Taylor, Steve Lacy, David Murray, Don Pullen and Reggie Workman.
New Music Now
New Music Now is a series of creative music concerts at the ICA/Boston presenting some of the
world's most adventurous musicians and composers. Organized with renowned composer and
saxophonist Ned Rothenberg, New Music Now showcases artists who challenge musical
convention and genres.
