NEW • NOUVEAUTE • NEUHEIT 04/08-(6) Title: George Onslow (1784-1853) Grand Septuor op. 79 Nonet op. 77 Artists: Consortium Classicum Stefan Irmer, piano 1 CD Order No.: MDG 301 1480-2 UPC-Code: Chamber Turn Our chamber music series featuring the compositions of George Onslow now turns to his works for large ensemble. On this CD the Consortium Classicum presents two of the very last works of this master who died in 1853: the Nonet op. 77 and the Grand Septuor op. 79. Noble Origins George Onslow was of English and French noble ancestry – which made life difficult and unsettled during what were revolutionary times. Born in the Auvergne in 1784, he had to flee with his parents to Hamburg. He later studied in London and Vienna and then returned to Paris in the early nineteenth century as an avid pianist and young chamber composer whose cosmopolitan, virtuoso chamber concertos sold like hot cakes. He first turned to compositions for wind instruments at the end of his career when technical innovations aroused his interest in this genre. Royal Priviledge We owe the nonet to a trip to England undertaken by the composer in 1846, when Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria, presented him with a selection of his works. Onslow responded by dedicating his op. 77 for large ensemble to the prince, and it was received with enthusiasm by the Parisian press and public on its premiere. If the nonet assigns equal solo tasks to the various instruments, then in the op. 79 septet Onslow conforms to the taste of his times in granting the piano priority over the other instruments – thus verging on the piano concerto. Extraordinary Tradition The Consortium Classicum looks back on a tradition extending over almost forty years. The recording editions of this ensemble led by the clarinetist Dieter Klöcker, in every respect an extraordinary chamber formation, are countless. And the ensemble succeeds again and again in performing its repertoire with its own unique sense of sound, brilliant wit, inspiration, and subtle touch. On this release the consummate pianist Stefan Irmer complements the Consortium sound.
