CAMILLE THURMAN
Saxophonist, Flutist, Vocalist,
Composer & Educator Camille Thurman, multi‐talented saxophonist, flutist, vocalist, composer and educator is a young musician emerging on the horizon, acquiring an impressive list of accomplishments that extend well beyond her years. Her lush, velvety, rich & warm sound on the tenor saxophone has eluded others to compare her sound to the likeness of tenor greats Gene Ammons, Stanley Turrentine and Lester Young to name a few. Camille’s ability to sing 4 octaves and perform vocalese, has given her the capability to influence audiences with melodies reminiscent to the sounds of Minnie Riperton, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Her gift of taking the sounds evocative of yesteryear’s legends and creatively pair them with the nuances, edge and freshness of today’s music, has not only expanded the possibilities of jazz in the upcoming generation but also gained her the respect of audiences in Israel, Switzerland and around the world. An accomplished performer and composer in her own right, Camille has shared the stage with Jazz and R&B greats Dr. Billy Taylor, Benny Golson, George Coleman, Russell Malone, George Benson, Dr. Lonie Smith, Charli Persip, Valery Ponomarev, Lew Tabackin, Dave Valentine , Anthony Hamilton, Eric Benet, Alicia Keys, India Arie, Brandy, SWV, Ciara, Missy Elliot, and many others. Camille leads her own quartet, which has performed in the 2009 International Women in Jazz Festival, the 2010 Super Jazz Ashdod Israel Festival and many other jazz venues and festivals around the New York Area and around the world. Camille can also be seen performing regularly with a number of bands including the Nicholas Payton Television Studio Orchestra, the Mimi Jones Band, Charli Persip and Supersound, the Valery Ponomarev Big Band, and the UMOJA Sextet. Venues that she has performed at include Lincoln Center, The Jazz Standard, The Iridium, The Blue Note, The Kitano, The Grand Opera House and the NJPAC, just to name a few. With a perfect ear for music, Camille was born in Saint Albans, New York to two educators. She grew up singing, memorizing and listening to the sounds of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Sarah Vaughan and many others in her house by her mother. Inspired by her Jr. High School music teacher, Camille began playing the flute at age 12 and soon afterward switched to the tenor saxophone at age 14 after receiving a full scholarship to CPSM preparatory music school to study jazz. Once entering college, she began singing and playing with the school Jazz Band, which lead her to working with Valery Ponomarev and Charli Persip. After completing her bachelors of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Binghamton University, Camille moved to NYC pursuing a career as a jazz musician. She will be releasing her debut album ORIGINS in 2013 on the Hottone Music label. Camille is excited about exploring new possibilities, making beautiful music and sharing it with the world. www.camillethurmanmusic.com
