NEW • NOUVEAUTE • NEUHEIT 06/05-(5) Title: Bach/Busoni Goldberg Variations Nun komm’ der Heiden Heiland Franz Liszt Petrach Sonnets Busoni Recueillement Musician: Claudius Tanski, piano Number of CDs: 1 Order Number: MDG 312 1323-2 UPC-Code: Mind-Expanding Experience Absolute Dedication On his MDG recordings crowned with many prizes Claudius Tanski has shown what the compositional artist Ferruccio Busoni formed from Bach and set on its own new compositional ground. Here we present another audiophile mind-expanding experience in the field of late-romantic sound splendor — certainly more than merely a “fully valid Busoni disc” (FonoForum). Franz Liszt’s Petrarch Sonnets were originally designed as song compositions but reworked by Liszt himself into poetic piano pieces with a sophistication similar to that of Busoni in his approach to Bach’s works — the common denominator is unmistakable: absolute dedication to beautiful sound. Modern Fulfillment Claudius Tanski’s prominence can be gathered from the resonance that his MDG CDs have occasioned in the music world: For the pianist Busoni, Bach’s artistry was the point of departure for modern piano playing. With his sound expansions Busoni fulfilled the “necessity of history”; in his eyes he was not arranging Bach but guiding him to a sound that in the eighteenth century “had been left behind the great composer.” What he meant by this can now be heard once more on this recording premiere on a carefully restored Steinway from 1901. Enthusiastic Continuation Busoni’s Bach arrangements are borne by two characteristics, by enthusiasm and naiveté. Accordingly, Busoni chastised his baroque model for having limited “his” Goldberg Variations to a mere twenty, reinforced the bass with magnificent octave doublings, ornamented wherever he could ornament — in other words, he enthusiastically continued the compositional process.
