Gianmaria Griglio
Conductor
Young Italian conductor Gianmaria Griglio is on the rise to great success, quickly
captivating his audiences time and again with his vibrant and dynamic interpretations. His
magnetic personality and passionate sense of drama inspire some of the most exciting and
gripping performances.
For the 2012/13 season, Maestro Griglio has been commissioned by International Opera
Theater to write and conduct a new opera, Camille Claudel, which will premiere at Teatro
degli Avvaloranti in Città della Pieve in Italy. He will also conduct the revival of Pedini’s
Jago in Italy and with IOT. In the 2011/12 season, he was on the podium with International
Opera Theater in Philadelphia for the world premiere of Carlo Pedini’s Buffalo Soldier
which subsequently traveled to Italy for its European premiere.
As Music Director of International Opera Theater (IOT) since 2008, Maestro Griglio has
conducted many successful premieres of new works, including productions of Decameron,
Efrain Amaya’s La Bisbetica Domata with the Orchestra Filarmonica Italiana at the
prestigious Festival Internazionale della Cultura in Bergamo, and his first triumph with
IOT, Jago by Carlo Pedini.
Maestro Griglio has conducted numerous masterworks of the Italian operatic repertoire as
Music Director of the Recondite Armonie festival and Festival Colline Saluzzesi since 2005,
including: Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Le Nozze di Figaro, Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore,
Verdi’s Nabucco, La Traviata, Rigoletto, and Il Trovatore, and Puccini’s La Bohème, Tosca,
and Madama Butterfly.
Long an advocate of contemporary music, Maestro Griglio recently took part in the first
recording of music by American composer Irwin Bazelon with the Orchestra of Sofia
(Bulgaria), for Albany Records. In addition to his work as Music Director for IOT, he has
conducted Philip Glass’ Les Enfants Terrible and the world premiere of Harold Farberman’s
The Song of Eddie, which was a candidate for a Pulitzer Prize in 2005.
Maestro Griglio was awarded a fellowship by the Wagner Stiftung of Bayreuth for the 2010
Bayreuther Festspiele and currently serves as Artistic Director of the International Lyric
Competition Città di Saluzzo dedicated to Magda Olivero, a native of Saluzzo, for her 100th
birthday.
Gianmaria Griglio studied violin with Massimo Marin and Philipe Bride, graduating from
the Guido Cantelli conservatory of Novara. He studied composition with Marco Minetti and
Larry Wallach, conducting with Gilberto Serembe at the Academy of Music in Pescara, and
with Harold Farberman in the United States. He won a scholarship to study conducting at
Bard College, was chosen to be Associate Artist for the Atlantic Center for the Arts in
Florida, and held the position of Assistant Conductor under Leon Botstein with the
American Symphony Orchestra.
Also active as an accompanist and composer, Maestro Griglio recently took part in the Alba
Music Festival Italy & USA, with such artists as David Froom and Louis Karchin.
