Edvard Grieg:
Chamber Music Gala
Edvard Grieg:
Chamber Music Gala
Internationally acclaimed
artists celebrate the
world famous composer
This gala concert presents Edvard Grieg as a composer of chamber music
and songs performed by internationally acclaimed artists. The instrumental
works appear in reverse chronology: in the classically restrained Violin Sonata from 1886 Grieg relinquishes his national style for a ‘broader horizon’,
the 1883 Cello Sonata contains several well-known motifs, and the largescale Ballad for Piano from 1876 caused Grieg so much emotional turmoil
that he never performed it in public.
Artists performing are: Norwegian pianist Håvard Gimse, Swedish soprano
Kerstin Avemo, Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, Lithuanian-born
violinist and violist Julian Rachlin, and Norwegian cellist Truls Mørk.

The concert was one of the outstanding features of the 2007 Bergen Music Festival. According to the critics, Leif Ove Andsnes’s performance of
Grieg’s extremely challenging piano piece ‘Ballad in G Minor’ was the undisputed highlight of the concert. Another peak performance was Julian
Archlin’s rendering of Grieg’s fiery third Violin Sonata, in which Rachlin was
accompanied by Andsnes. Together with Håvard Gimse, Truls Mørk elevated
Grieg’s Sonata for Cello and Piano to the quintessence of ensemble playing.
An added attraction was soprano Kerstin Avemo’s performance of ‘Solveig’s
Song’ from the ‘Peer Gynt’ suite.
