He also wrote “Three Songs From a Child’s Garden of Verses,” based on the work of Robert Louis Stevenson, which the ETCC premiered in 2003. “There is nothing more rewarding to a composer than to be able to collaborate with dedicated and appreciative fellow musicians,” Coe said. “These amazingly gifted and hardworking young people, led by the dynamic and gifted Beth Perkinson McCoy, have brought great pleasure to this region by their exciting performances of a broad range of choral literature. But to a living composer, they have also brought challenge and encouragement to my continued creative output.” About the Composer Coe began his musical training at the Cadek Conservatory in Chattanooga and holds a degree in music from Yale University. He worked privately for three years at the Paris Conservatory of Music, as well as the Fontainebleau School. Coe has composed several acclaimed works and has had his work performed, or commissioned, by numerous acclaimed operatic groups and orchestras around the world. Coe studied with Paul Hindemith and Nadia Boulanger. He is the first American to have an opera, South, from the play by Julien Green, produced by the Paris Opera. His opera Rachel was produced in Nashville and Knoxville by the Knoxville Opera. His opera La Grand Siecle, on a text of Ionesco, was produced by the Opera of Nantes. He writes in almost every format: orchestral, choral and chamber music. He wrote the score for Universal’s Birds in Peru, starring Jean Seberg and directed by Romain Gary. He has written the scores for all of the James Agee Film Project documentaries including Agee, which was nominated for an Academy Award. His work has been performed by major symphony orchestras, including the Chicago and Baton Rouge symphonies.
