His great successful interpretations include roles like Beaupertuis in Nino Rota’s Il cappello di paglia di Firenze, Leporello in Don Giovanni, Don Alfonso in Così fan Tutte, and the title roles in Don Pasquale and Gianni Schicchi. Mr. Torruella is praised for his “perfect comedic timing and dramatic chops” in Verdi’s Falstaff performed in New York, Houston and Puerto Rico. His Buffo (comic) repertoire is distinguished with performances as Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore, Don Pasquale, and Dottor Bartolo in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia. Other credits includes Don Giovanni (Salzburg, Austria), Don Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro (Opera New Hampshire), Monsieur Javelinot and Thierry in Poulenc’s Les dialogues des Carmelites and Alcindoro/Benoit in La Bohème, both performed in Tel Aviv, Israel. Recent engagements in the 2014-15 season included his signature roles: Dottor Bartolo, the villain Coppélius in Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and his debut as Colline in La Bohème for Teatro de la Ópera de Puerto Rico. 2015-16 Season engagements include his return as Dulcamara, and his debut as Don Magnifico in Rossini's La Cenerentola at the Granada Theater in Santa Barbara, California. Other engagements include appearances as Don Alfonso in Mozart's Così fan tutte in a concert version with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, and a USA Premiere, in Atlanta of a comic opera by Mexican composer Juan de Trigos. The Puerto Rican buffo/baritone own a bachelor's degree from the Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico where he participated actively on the Opera Workshop with performances as the Sprecher in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Don Ignigo Gómez in L’heure Espagnole by Maurice Ravel, Der Lautsprecher in Viktor Ullmann’s Der Keiser von Atlantis and Superintendent Budd in Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring. Mr. Torruella holds a master’s degree from the University of Houston Moores School of Music.
