BLUMENKRANZ, MD, MMS Looking Back a Decade at the Pyron Lecture… and Finding Your Place in the Grand Scheme of Things... You Are the Author of Your Own Narrative , Mark S. Blumenkranz, MD is the HJ Smead Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, and the founding Director of the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford University, a 60,000 sq. foot state of the art medical and research facility, whose design and construction he spearheaded and that was completed in 2010. He obtained his Baccalaureate, Master of Medical Science in Biochemical Pharmacology, and MD degrees at Brown, a Residency in Ophthalmology at Stanford, and a Fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal diseases at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami. He completed the Executive Program at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2004. Dr. Blumenkranz is the author of more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, and multiple patents in the area of vitreo-retinal diseases, with special interests in ocular pharmacology, and new microsurgical and laser-based devices and techniques. He has received numerous awards for his many contributions including the Jackson Award Lecture in 2013, and has served on the Editorial Boards of many of the leading journals in the field, including the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, Graefe’s Archives for Ophthalmology, and Retina amongst others. He is a past President of the Macula Society, the Retina Society and the ’ • : American University Professors of Ophthalmology. He is a Fellow of the Corporation of Brown University, where he serves as chairman of the Medical School Committee. Dr Blumenkranz has a longstanding interest and expertise in universitycorporate technology transfer and early stage biomedical company development having either founded or served on the Boards of Directors of a number of successful medical drug and device companies. He has been a Director of OIS, Midlabs and Oculex Pharmaceuticals in the past. At Oculex he was also Chairman of the SAB and the principal designer of the successful phase 2 Ozurdex trial, leading to its acquisition by Allergan in 2003 for $230M. He served as a Founder, Director and Chairman of the SAB at Macusight, an early stage biopharmaceutical company that developed an ocular formulation for Sirolimus, and which was acquired by Santen in 2010. He was a Founder and Director of Peak Surgical, an innovator in pulsed plasma mediated electro-surgery that was acquired by Medtronics in 2011 for $120M. In 2004 he co-founded Optimedica Corp. for which he co-wrote the foundation IP for the PASCAL and Catalys lasers. Optimedica was acquired by Abbott Medical Optics in 2013 in a deal valued at $400M including an upfront cash payment of $250M and subsequent milestone based payments of $150M. Dr. Blumenkranz continues to be involved as a founder and director in a number of active biopharmaceutical and medical device companies. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Avalanche Biotechnologies, an ocular gene therapy company, which he cofounded and co-wrote the foundation IP for in 2006. He is Chairman of the Board, a cofounder and foundation IP author of Digisight Corporation, an ophthalmic m-health and cloud-based electronic medical record platform focusing on out of office diagnostics. He is a director and co-author of the foundation IP for Vantage Surgical, an early stage surgical imaging company. He is a founder, IP co-author and director of Combangio Corp., a pre-clinical stage biopharmaceutical company developing protein engineering based therapies for ocular disease. He is also a director of two Ireland domiciled companies. Presbia Corp. is the developer of a novel procedural treatment employing an intracorneal polymeric implant for age related loss of near vision, that is in FDA trials in the U.S. Optimyst Systems is a preclinical stage company developing a novel method for ophthalmic topical drug application.
