Strategic Approach to Astigmatism Correction
Chair: Shigeru Kinoshita
Speakers: Ludger Hanneken, Kazuno Negishi, Shigeru Kinoshita
In recent years, extraordinary developments have been made on diagnostics and operative tools to refine astigmatism
correction outcomes. Surgical options to correct astigmatism are also growing rapidly such as the advent of new toric IOLs
and the femtosecond laser for arcuate corneal incisions at the time of cataract surgery.
The next question would be what kinds of approach should be taken to maximize outcome? Many options are available
today; however it is essential to make appropriate choice of approach.
In this seminar, three expert doctors will share clinical pearls in the astigmatism correction including diagnostics tools and
toric IOL experiences.

The Best Way to Enjoy a Morning Buffet; Macular Disease
Chair: Shiho Kunimatsu-Sanuki
Speakers: Fumi Gomi, Chikako Suto
The best way to enjoy a morning buffet is to sample and choose only the most beautifully arranged items.
Macular disease is directly linked to patients’ quality of life. Recently, the presence of new diagnostic imaging devices
and medicines has continued to expand into the medical marketplace. Although ophthalmic fundus imaging plays an
important role in the diagnosis and classification of macular diseases and in monitoring treatment, the use of these
techniques and treatments depends on each ophthalmologist, like guests at a morning buffet.
In this course two experts will introduce their own “recipes”. Let’s study these delicious new ideas on how to manage
macular disease and diabetic macular edema.

Ranibizumab: Transformational Outcomes in Patients with DME and RVO
Chairs: Yuichiro Ogura, José Cunha-Vaz
Speakers: Yuichiro Ogura, José Cunha-Vaz, Ian Pearce, Christian Prünte
It is increasingly clear that, in DME and RVO, early-stage pathology is driven by VEGF. Consequently, physicians should
endeavor to initiate early treatment using anti-VEGF agents. Comorbidities in patients with DME and RVO may mandate
the use of anti-VEGF treatments with minimal systemic exposure to optimize the benefit-risk ratio. Data from recent clinical
trials of ranibizumab demonstrate significant visual and anatomic improvements and minimal systemic exposure with an
individualized treatment regimen. With the wealth of available evidence and its well-established safety profile, ranibizumab
is a preferred option in the treatment of patients with DME and RVO (both BRVO and CRVO).

Evidence of Neuroprotection in Topical Treatment
Chairs: Makoto Araie, Robert N. Weinreb
Speakers: Hidenobu Tanihara, David S. Greenfield, Ki-Ho Park
Approaches to neuroprotection include identifying exogenous agents that alleviate neuronal damage or upregulate
causative intracellular processes. Several topical anti-glaucoma agents reportedly show neuroprotective effects in vitro,
particularly brimonidine that is neuroprotective in several experimental systems. Moreover, topical brimonidine 0.2%
better preserved visual field than timolol 0.5% in the randomized double masked Low-pressure Glaucoma Treatment
Study (LoGTS). In this symposium, the pathophysiology of optic nerve damage and its amelioration via neuroprotection,
particularly with brimonidine, will be addressed.

"A Clear Vision For Life®" - The Importance of Inflammation and Tear Film Stability in Dry Eye
Chairs: Kazuo Tsubota, Hyo Myung Kim, Zuguo Liu
Speakers: Xuguang Sun, Hungwon Tchah, Norihiko Yokoi
DEWS defines “dry eye” as a multifactorial disease affecting tears and the ocular surface that results in symptoms of
discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability with potential damage to the ocular surface. It is accompanied by
increased osmolarity of the tear film and inflammation of the ocular surface.
However, the core mechanism of dry eye is situational and varies in accordance with each country’s occurrence. Therefore,
in this seminar the Asia Dry Eye Society will discuss in depth “the stability of the tear film and the inflammation brought
about by dry eye.”

The Present and the Future of Optical Coherence Tomography for Anterior Segment Evaluation
Chair: Shigeru Kinoshita
Speakers: Naoyuki Maeda, Tin Aung
The precise, quantitative analysis of anterior segment shape is essential for corneal irregularity, primary glaucoma and
cataract surgery. For instance, the applicable clinical situations are the corneal shape evaluation of keratoconus suspected,
the evaluation of anterior chamber angle shape in primary angle-closure glaucoma, and the IOL calculation in patients
with post-refractive surgeries including LASIK, and moderate/severe corneal astigmatism.
Several optical coherence tomographies are used in these circumstances. Among them, the swept source optical
coherence tomography (SSOCT, CASIA, Tomey Corporation) is a novel imaging device that employs a 1310 nm swept laser,
which is the state of the art OCT device for the anterior-segment quantitative analysis mentioned above.
In this seminar, we invite Dr. Naoyuki Maeda, Japan, and Dr. Tin Aung, Singapore, two distinguished clinician- scientists in
the world, to understand the effectiveness of SSOCT. We hope you will enjoy this seminar.

Diabetic Macular Edema: A Look at Best Practices for Optimal Visual Acuity
Chairs: Quan Dong Nguyen, Diana Do
Speakers: Hiroko Terasaki, Tien Yin Wong
Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a complex yet common disease, and a leading cause of vision loss in patients with
diabetic retinopathy (DR). While several therapies for DME are currently available, including macular laser photocoagulation,
corticosteroids, and anti-VEGF agents, clinical data on existing and emerging agents is continuously evolving. New
information, coupled with the lack of consensus regarding the optimal management of DME, has contributed to gaps
in patient management. Thus, this activity is intended to provide retina specialists with strategies for evaluating and
incorporating data from clinical trials into practice in order to improve the management of patients with DME.

Clinical Advantages of Swept Source OCT and New Photo-Thermal Stimulation with PASCAL Laser
Chair: Fumio Shiraga
Speakers: Pravin Dugel, Richard Spaide
In this symposium, two new technological advances will be explained and their clinical advantages will be discussed. OCT
has become the clinical standard of care in Ophthalmology. Topcon is the only company to introduce the 3rd generation
OCT, based on swept-source technology. The advantages this new OCT provides over time domain and Fourier Domain
OCT will be discussed. Another clinical breakthrough has occurred in laser treatment. The idea of placing visible burns
to treat DME and DR patients is being replaced with a new, non-damaging photo-thermal stimulation technique that is
clinically effective without damaging the retina and destroying photoreceptors.

Ultra-Widefield Retinal Imaging a New Standard of Care: Clinical Applications & Case Studies
Chair: Sebastian Wolf
Speakers: Srinivas Sadda, Seenu M. Hariprasad, Quan Nygen, Szilard Kiss
Optos is continuing to expand the clinical applications of optomap Ultra-widefield Imaging. Studies demonstrate that
significant clinical changes in diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, degenerative and inflammatory
disease occur in the peripheral retina. Thus, the ability to image and monitor the entire retina with Ultra-widefield Imaging
is crucially important. Additionally, targeted photocoagulation guided by Ultra-widefield imaging may work together
with pharmacological intervention to aid improved outcomes in Diabetic Macular Oedema. This symposium will educate
delegates on the role of Optos technology to enable a new standard of care to be delivered that will lead to more effective
detection and treatment of the retinal disease.
