Your Ears: High Risk
for
Skin Cancer
Will you be getting some sun as the weather improves?
If so, be careful. As small as the ears are, a third of all skin
cancers occur on the outer ear. About 85% of ear skin
cancers occur in men. This is probably because of their
shorter hair and being in the sun more often.
Your best preventative is regular and liberal use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Take special care
to apply sunscreen to the complex structures and grooves of the ears, where a full third of the ear skin
cancers occur.

TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR
HEARING HEALTH
We want to help you take control of your hearing healthcare
through the summer months by cleaning and checking on your
hearing instruments as well as retesting and reprogramming
your hearing instruments. This way we can make sure your
ears are healthy and your hearing aid prescription is up to date.
If it’s been more than one year since your last hearing test, it’s
time for a re-check! If you feel your hearing aids need an
upgrade, we are proud to offer you a trade in discount and a
free trial period.
Long-Term Study Is
First to Show Wearing
Hearing Aids Reduces
Risk of Cognitive Decline
Associated with
Hearing Loss
A Wake-up Call to Address Hearing Loss Now
SOMERSET, NJ October 29 -- It is well-established that untreated
hearing loss can lead to an acceleration of cognitive problems. A
just-published study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics
Society is the first to show that wearing hearing aids reduces
cognitive decline associated with hearing loss. The study, “SelfReported Hearing Loss: Hearing Aids and Cognitive Decline in Elderly
Adults: A 25-year Study”, followed 3,670 adults, age 65 and older
over a 25-year period. Professor Hélène Amieva, a leading
researcher in the Neuropsychology and Epidemiology of Aging at the
University of Bordeaux, France, headed up the study which was part
of the Personnes Agèes QUID cohort (PAQUID), a cohort specifically
designed to study brain aging.
With this study, we are seeing for the first time evidence that
hearing aids are a prevention against accelerated cognitive decline
in later years. That’s a powerful motivator for the more than 75% of
people with hearing loss who could benefit from hearing aids but are
reluctant to address their hearing health.”
Brain First” Hearing Aid Technology
These findings add to a large body of evidence showing that
technologies used in hearing aids must be designed to minimize the
mental effort that hearing loss leads to when listening to speech in
background noise. For almost 20 years, Oticon researchers at the
world renowned Eriksholm research center have focused on
BrainHearing™ technology, an approach that carefully processes the
speech signal so it is presented to the person’s brain as clearly and
accurately as possible - the way the brain is best able to understand
it. With more sound information, the brain doesn’t have to work as
hard to understand what is being said. The result is a clearer, more
effortless listening experience. For people who wear hearing aids,
this means less demanding mental processing throughout the day so
they can engage more actively in everyday life.
The transition from sound to meaning happens in the brain. When
hearing is compromised, such as with hearing loss, the sound signal
that the brain is accustomed to processing is different and it takes
more effort to fill in the blanks. This is why hearing loss can be so
tiring and can drain the mental energy people need for everyday
activities. People may respond by withdrawing socially because it’s
just too exhausting to try to keep up. Social isolation and the
resulting depression and health issues have long been recognized as
increased risk factors for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Hearing Care is Health Care™
Hearing loss is the most common chronic health condition
affecting older adults. The PAQUID study underscores the
importance of addressing the challenges of under-diagnosis and
under-treatment of hearing loss.
“This study should be a wake-up call for people who are
considering doing something about treating their hearing loss but
have been delaying,” says Dr. Olenick, Hearing Zone Audiologist.
“It’s not just about hearing well today, it’s about the long-term
effects of untreated hearing loss.”
Meet your neighbor, Delane Anderson
Delane was raised in Rockland, Idaho and has been a lifelong resident of Power County except
while attending ISU. He currently resides in American Falls where he and his wife Laura raised four
children of which all graduated from American Falls High School and attended ISU. The Anderson's
are the proud grandparents to two grandchildren. Their sons live in the Pocatello area and daughters
live in the Boise area.
Delane earned his Collision Repair and Refurbish Certificate from ISU College of Technology in 1980
and his Auto Repair Management Certificate from 3M in 1992. He owns Anderson's Body and Glass in
American Falls. As owner of Anderson's Body and Glass he has been awarded the Continued Growth
and Customer Satisfaction Award from BASF in 2000 and the Business of the Year award in 2001 from
the American Falls Chamber of Commerce. In the year 2000 Delane was inducted into the Hall of
Fame with a "Partner in Education" award from the American Falls Education Foundation.
Delane is active in his community, volunteering with Boy Scouts of America where he earned his
Adult Duty to God Award in 1999 and his Wood Badge Leadership Certificate in 2006. He is a search
and rescue volunteer, and is a volunteer fire fighter. He serves on the Advisory board for the Idaho
State University College of Technology and provides free services to the ISU Auto Collision Repair
program. Annually, Delane donates time at a Skills USA Competition and spends many hours serving
in his church.
Delane has been elected to serve as Power County Commisioner. He enjoys working to improve all
aspects of Power County. When Delane is not working and serving he enjoys biking, hiking and doing
anything outdoors.
At Hearing Zone, we enjoy every time Delane Anderson walks through our doors. He always
brightens our day!

Identify the Signs of Early Hearing Loss.
Redefine how patients
perceive hearing loss!
Hearing loss affects more than just the ears. Hearing loss
has been linked to depression, a greater risk of falling, and
can impact overall physical and mental health.
A recent study shows that a person with hearing loss, who
does not use hearing aids, has a higher risk of accelerated
cognitive decline due to withdrawal from social activities,*
This study reinforces our commitment to create hearing
instruments that support how the brain makes sense of
sound, an approach we call BrainHearing™.
