North Reading Middle/High School - Completed Design
Collaborating with Dore & Whittier Architects on this
270,000 sf new facility that includes flexible classrooms,
small group learning rooms, special education spaces,
high-tech science laboratories, technology program
spaces, and art rooms. The project is seeking LEED® Gold
Certification. Completion of the project is expected in fall2015.
Morgan State University, Behavioral And Social Sciences Center
Teaming with HOK to design a new 125,000 sf Behavioral and Social Sciences Center that is
organized into five academic departments: economics, history and geography, political science,
psychology and sociology, and anthropology.
Earth Day and Innovation In Green Design Awards Dinner
Vanderweil attended the 5th annual Earth Day and Innovation In Green Design Awards Dinner,
which was hosted by the Massachusetts Chapter of the US Green Building Council. A group of
enthusiastic building professionals gathered to celebrate the day and recognize some exceptional
building and building product innovations in Massachusetts.
Earth Day Awards Dinner
Baystate Medical Center, Hospital of the Future, South Wing Fit-out
Teaming with Steffian Bradley Architects for a fit-out of 72,000 sf on the 5th, 6th, and 7th floors
of the South Wing in the recently completed Hospital of the Future for the addition of 96 new
inpatient beds. The design includes a new 180,000 cfm custom rooftop air handling unit with
dual tunnels for redundancy, and the addition of a new 500 boiler horsepower low pressure
steam boiler in the existing boiler plant.
Genentech
Working with Genentech to lead a multi-disciplinary team of in-house district cooling system
design engineers along with seasoned Genentech sub-consultants with direct experience in the
design of large, ammonia-based district cooling plants; campus hydraulic thermal distribution
networks; and building comfort and process cooling conversions.
Confidential Owner, Parcel A, Autograph Hotel
Teaming with ADD Inc. on the design of a new 90,000 sf (approximate), 6-story, 134-room hotel
located at Parcel A on Sleeper Street. The ground level of the hotel will include the lobby areas,
kitchen and dining, two function rooms, a visitors' room, restrooms, and general support spaces.
New York Office
Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Buildings 8 + 9, Mt. Pleasant Expansion Project
Working for Regeneron Pharmaceuticals on two new buildings at The Landmark at Eastview
campus include approximately 140,000 sf of office space (as well as conferencing and an
auditorium), 110,000 sf of laboratory space, and 50,000 sf of vivarium space connected to each
other, to an existing building, and to a new parking structure via pedestrian bridges.

SPI Roundtable Hosted by Vanderweil
Vanderweil hosted the Sustainable Performance Institute (SPI) Roundtable at its Boston office on
May 14, 2013. Open to the public, professionals came together to discuss building performance
data and discuss: What is good data? How do you get it? There was great turnout and
discussion from a variety of professionals ranging from architects, engineers, contractors, and
government officials to utilities and owners among others.
IDEA Conference
Garen Demirchian, PE, Mike Thornton, and Jeff Duncan attended the IDEA Conference that took
place on February 19-21 in San Diego, CA. Mike presented at the conference speaking with
John Bradley from New York University (NYU). Their presentation entitled: “New York University,
Greening Washington Square Campus: ‘Optimization Produces Cool Savings and Fund Future
Projects’” discussed NYUs "greening" of the Washington Square Campus through the repowering of their cogeneration system and need to reduce energy consumption and increase
savings. Also presented were highlights of NYUs Cogeneration systems performance thru Super
Storm Sandy and Lower Manhattan Power Outage. Jeff also served as a moderator for "Master
Planning & Infrastructure Renewal" that involved discussions on energy and utility master plans
from three universities.
2013 Tradeline International Conference on Biocontainment Facilities
Michael Walsh, PE, LEED AP BD+C and Alex Kozinets, PE, LEED AP were speakers at the 2013
Tradeline International Conference on Biocontainment Facilities held on March 17-19, 2013 in
San Diego, California. Mike, along with a member from Payette, presented: "Fundamentals of
Planning and Design of Biocontainment Labs and MEP Systems." Alex, along with a member
from Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, presented: "Facility Upgrades and Retrofits to Meet
BMBL-5's 'No Reversal' Requirement".
Sustainable Cities Design Academy 10 Recap
To help support and advance good sustainable design practices, the American Architectural
Foundation, in partnership with United Technologies Corporation (UTC), created the Sustainable
Cities Design Academy (SCDA). Chad Wisler, PE, LEED AP BD+C attended the SCDA. The
10th collaborative charrette in Washington, DC was held to provide leadership development
and technical assistance to local community leaders who are engaged in planning a sustainable
building project in their community. It also marked American Architectural Foundation’s 10th
engagement with public-private partnerships throughout the U.S.
U.S. Army Garrison at West Point: MacArthur Short Barracks and Modernization Plan
Teaming with ATKINS to provide modernization of MacArthur Short Barracks, and one of nine
existing cadet barracks at the U.S. Military Academy (USMA). This project is part of the Cadet
Barracks Upgrade Program (CBUP) for all nine existing Cadet Barrack buildings.
New Jersey City University, Science Building Addition and Renovation
Teaming with Spiezle Architectural Group to renovate the existing 78,000 sf facility that
includes labs, classrooms and offices, and expand the building to accommodate approximately
22,000 sf of program space to support the academic needs.
Alexandria Office
Northern Virginia Community College System, Loudoun Campus, Reynolds Building
Renovation
Teaming with Hord Coplan Macht for this complete renovation of NVCC Loudoun Campus’
78,000 sf main academic building, originally constructed in 1972.
Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington
Teaming with Beyer Blinder Belle to provide full design services for JHS as they relocate their
synagogue in order to enhance the development potential for a large scale redevelopment
proposed by a developer.
Princeton/Philadelphia Office
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, School of Nursing and Science Building
Teaming with H2L2 for a new 119,741 gsf state-of-the-art teaching facility. This new facility will
allow the Rutgers Camden School of Nursing and the academic departments engaged in health
sciences teaching and research to continue to grow.
Barnabas Health, Clara Maas Medical Center, ICU/Medical Office Building Addition
Teaming with Francis Cauffman for this 85,000 sf ICU and medical office building addition and
associated campus upgrades.
Transmission & Distribution Group
New 345 kV Line, Carver to Barnstable, MA
Engineering and design for a new 26 mile 345 kV
transmission line, which crosses the Cape Code
Canal. The project also includes reconfiguration
of two other 345 kV transmission lines. New line
energized on 30 June 2013. The line crosses through
environmentally and archeological sensitive areas of
Cape Cod and southeastern MA.

ACE Mentor Program of Massachusetts
Vanderweil would like to recognize John Leeds, PE, LEED AP BD+C, from our Boston office, for
his ongoing contribution to the ACE Mentoring Program. The mission of ACE Mentoring Program
is to engage, excite, and enlighten high school students to pursue careers in architecture,
construction, and engineering through mentoring to support their continued advancement in the
industry.
Congratulations to David Lee, William Kain, and James Lanzarotta for earning their Green
Building Design + Construction (BD+C) LEED® rating systems credentials.
Job Shadowing: College Student Experiences Work
Marc MacDonald provided job shadowing for Lianne Griffin, a junior at Tufts University on
Tuesday, August 13, 2013. Lianne had a productive experience as Marc spent the day with
Lianne and explained how drawings are produced with Revit and AutoCAD and the construction
engineering process. Lianne was also able to attend a Lunch & Learn as well as speak with an
equipment vendor from Trane.
2013 ACEC Gold Award - Shire Building 200
Shire Human Genetic Therapies, Building 200 located in Lexington, MA received a Gold Award
from The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC) honoring
Vanderweil's engineering excellence in the design of the building. Each year, the ACEC awards
are bestowed upon those companies who have demonstrated the highest degree of merit and
ingenuity within the engineering field.
Webcast: Designing & Building the Safe Hospital
Bill Caretsky, from our New York office, was a panelist on the "Designing & Building the Safe
Hospital" webcast presented by Sanford Rose Associates in April 2013. Bill led a 15-minute
presentation about the guiding principals, smart planning decisions, and standard healthcare
HVAC design requirements.
Endo Health Solutions Project Hailed as a "Standard of Excellence"
Endo Health Solutions located in Malvern, PA was featured in Building Design + Construction
as one of the five projects that set the standard of excellence in design and construction. The
Building Team Awards judges noted that the design team worked closely to achieve the budget
and schedule with a sophisticated design, which included the closed-loop geothermal system and
the use of BIM to coordinate and resolve conflicts across building systems.
Runners Take Your Mark: J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge
Employees in the Vanderweil Boston and New York offices participated in the J.P. Morgan
Corporate Challenge. In Boston, there were 12,000 runners and walkers from 571 companies.
In New York, there were 15,000 entrants from 361 companies (for further information please go

Direct Mail Campaign Receives National Award
Vanderweil's direct mail campaign, showcasing projects from all offices and mailed to
Vanderweil's clients on a monthly basis, received a third place award in the category of "Direct
Mail Campaign" in the national competition for Marketing Communications held by the Society of
Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) on August 1, 2013.

Vanderweil ranked 166 on ENR's 2013 Top 500 Design Firms list, moving up 12 spots from last
year's list.
Capital One's West Creek Commons Building Achieves Four Globes Certification
The Capital One West Creek Commons Building achieved the Green Building Initiative’s Guiding
Principles certification of Four Globes.
" In the words of the GBI project manager, Jenna Granum, conveying the results of the
assessment conducted earlier this month, ‘This is truly an outstanding accomplishment.’ The
project team itself recognizes that this accomplishment rests squarely on the shoulders of several

Yale School of Medicine's LEPH 6th and 7th Floor Receives 2013 Annual Green Building Award
The 6th and 7th Floors of the Yale Laboratory of Epidemiology and Public Health (LEPH) at
the Yale School of Medicine received an Award of Merit in the Interior Awards Category by the
Connecticut Green Building Council at the 2013 Annual Green Building Awards on June 20, 2013.
These two projects included renovation and fit-out of a large portion of the 6th floor and the entire
7th floor, with the 6th Floor renovation achieving LEED® Gold Certification.

Revit/CAD and HVAC 101 Training
To help develop new employees, Vanderweil has developed a Revit/CAD/HVAC training class that
was initially rolled out in Boston. Morning and afternoon classes were held the week of July 8th
and focused on the use of Revit and AutoCAD programs, proper drafting practices and standards,
HVAC design basics, coordination between disciplines, and associated deliverables. Due to its
success, the training program is being targeted for the Fall for new people across the company.
A special ‘thank you’ goes to those who helped organize, prepare the agenda, and conduct the
training including: Jennifer Paige, Colin Demeyer, Nicole Imbergamo, Mike Kennedy, Matt Hayes,
Kevin Broughton, and Sarah Forrest.

Lab of the Year Special Mention 2013 - Harvard Sherman Fairchild
Our project with Payette won the R&D Lab of the Year 2013 Special Mention Award. The
facility underwent a gut renovation to provide new open bench laboratory space, tissue culture
laboratories (high occupant density), lab support spaces, microscopy spaces, a zebra fish suite,
a therapeutic screening area, administrative offices and conference rooms, and service support
spaces.
Lab of the Year Special Mention 2013 - DC Consolidated Forensics Laboratory
Our project with HOK won the R&D Lab of the Year 2013 Special Mention Award. Features of
the building include a BSL-3 laboratory, firing range, autopsy suites, public health labs, forensics
evidence labs, latent print labs, DNA labs, conference facility and fitness center.
New LEED® Certified Projects
Pictured below are four of Vanderweil's newest LEED® certified projects. And, as a follow-up
to the Winter 2012 newsletter, pictured above are three projects that also achieved LEED®
certification. Another project that received LEED®-NC Gold certification that is not shown is
Georgetown University's Regents Hall Science Center. In total, Vanderweil now has 97 LEED®
certified projects across the country!
