ORTHODONTIC DIET Foods that cannot be cleaned off the braces may lead to discoloration and decay of your teeth. Even though our braces and wires are metal, they are fragile and are usually damaged by eating the wrong food, thus takins us longer to finish treatment. Foods to avoid: Gum- sugarless or otherwise Sticky Foods- caramels, toffee, licorice, Now & Later candy, Starburst, Skittles, taffy and hard candy Hard Foods- nuts, popcorn, bagels, corn on the cob, carrots, apples (unless sliced), Doritos, pretzels, pizza, ice, hard chocolates and candies Eat and Drink much less- drinks with sugar, cookies, ice cream (when you do have them, be sure to brush after) Drinks-avoid all carbonated drinks Tips: Be careful with eating fruits with a pit in the middle Cut meat off of the bone Cut corn off of the cob Thinly slice apples Do not eat pizza crust Avoid chewing pencils, fingernails and ice Do not bite into anything and pull away with your teeth Foods that won't hurt your braces: Soup Applesauce Baba Ganoush Brown rice Sushi Grilled Chicken Bananas Crab Salad Fish Yogurt Shredded carrots Scrambled Eggs Oatmeal Curry Cream of Wheat Tuna Salad Mashed Potatoes Cooked Vegetables Pulled Apart Meat Ice Cream Shrimp Turkey Burger Tabouleh Pasta Meatloaf Oranges Lasagna Hummus Tofu Soft Bread By being careful with what you eat you will cut down on the time you must spend in the office having your appliances repaired. Keep in mind, there may be similar foods that were not mentioned that you should also not eat. If you cannot cut it up in little pieces, it's probably not a good idea to eat it. If anything becomes loose or broken, call our office even if you have an appointment the same day. Repair appointments require more time and we may not be able to accommodate you. Please save all broken pieces. Don't hesitate to call our office at (510) 528-2220 or visit our website at www.isongorthodontics.com Good luck!
