Why are so many younger children wearing braces and is it necessary?
One of the most common questions in my practice is regarding early orthodontic treatment and its necessity.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child get an orthodontic examination by an
orthodontic specialist at age 7. The benefits of early diagnosis and treatment include but are not limited to:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Reducing the need to extract permanent teeth.
Influencing jaw growth in a positive manner.
Lowering the risk of dental trauma.
Correcting harmful oral habits.
Improving aesthetics and self-esteem.
Reducing the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth.
Resulting in a healthier, happier smile!
While the majority of younger children do not need early orthodontic treatment, I’ve included below SIX
visible warning signs that a parent can use based on visual observation to see if your 7 - 10 year old child may
need to see an orthodontist.
1. Is there an Open Bite?
The child can stick his or her tongue
between the upper and lower front teeth
when the back teeth are together.
2. Is there an underbite?
The upper teeth sit behind the lower
front teeth.
3. Is there a crossbite?
Lower back teeth sit outside
the upper back teeth.
4. Do the upper teeth protrude?
Excessive protrusion of the upper front
teeth -"buck teeth"- increases risk
of trauma.
5. Is there a deep bite?
The upper front teeth cover the
lower front teeth too much.
6. How is the spacing?
Crowded or overlapped teeth...
...or noticeably large gaps between teeth.
When choosing an orthodontist, select one who has years of experience and one who both you and your child
feel comfortable with. Whether treatment is necessary, your child may spend several years visiting that office.
I hope you have found the information in this special report helpful in deciding whether your child needs early
orthodontic treatment. While this information may help answer some of the most common questions you
may have, the best way to determine whether your child needs early orthodontic treatment is to schedule a
complimentary exam with our office.
