Choosing your provider
of orthodontic treatment
How do you make your choice?
This leaflet contains information about the
various treatment providers that have signed
contracts with the Västmanland County
Council, as well as brief information about
the different treatment methods. Once you
have read this information, let the Dental
Care Unit of the Västmanland County
Council know who you want to perform your
orthodontic treatment.
Types of orthodontic treatment
Basically, there are two types of treatment:
 Removable dental braces, which can be
taken out of the mouth for cleaning. Such
braces are sometimes worn only at night,
sometimes all the time.
 Fixed dental braces on one or both jaws.
As the name indicates, these braces cannot
be removed.
Sometimes you will first have to use one
type of braces and then the other. When the
teeth have moved far enough, a retainer wire
on the back of the teeth or removable braces
are often used to keep them in place so that
they will not move after the orthodontic
treatment is finished.
More about treatments and what you
should keep in mind
General
It is important to stay in touch with your
regular dentist even if you get braces. If you
need to have a tooth removed or ground
down, he or she will assist in that.
When you get braces
The first few days after you get braces or
after your braces have been adjusted, your
teeth will be tender. This is perfectly natural,
as the purpose of the braces is to move the
teeth. You can expect to have difficulty
chewing and a tense feeling in your mouth
for two or three days. Braces may also
cause a sore. The usual method is to apply
some soft wax to the part of the braces
that feels sharp. Then the sore will usually
heal in a few days.
Extra important to keep your mouth clean
Having braces always means that you must
be particularly careful about dental
hygiene. Ropy and sticky objects easily get
stuck in the braces, and it is hard to keep
clean around fixed braces. In other words,
you have to brush your teeth particularly
carefully while you are wearing braces.
Reimbursement of travel costs
Whether you get removable or fixed
braces, they will have to be adjusted and
checked every five to twelve weeks. The
treatment lasts between one and three
years, so there will be quite a few visits to
the orthodontist.
According to the applicable rules as of
November 2011, the cost of travel outside
Västmanland is not reimbursed.
If you have questions relating to the
reimbursement of travel costs, please call
Samtrafik on 021-17 53 30.

Other
The Orthodontic Clinic of the Specialist Dental Services is located in the
Hospital Area in Västerås and has a satellite clinic at the Köping Hospital.
Both clinics are fully modern and have highly qualified staff. The clinic
has traditionally had very good working relations with the rest of the
Specialist Dental Services and with the general dental services of the
National Dental Service. The staff includes six specialist dentists and
eleven orthodontic assistants who have been specially trained to perform
many practical duties in the context of various orthodontic treatments.
We always try to focus on each patient’s needs, and we use the best
materials available on the market. Each week we have therapy meetings
where we jointly discuss difficult treatment cases, and we are also able to
consult other dentists within the Specialist Dental Services when
necessary.
We carry out quality follow-up and patient surveys on a regular basis to
monitor how satisfied our patients are with their treatments. Thanks to our
good working relations with the general dental services, we are able to let
them provide some treatments, above all regarding removable braces.
The waiting time for treatment is nine months.

Other
The clinic has engaged full-time in orthodontics since 1995. The
business was founded in 1967 and has been part of Praktikertjänst
AB for the past 30 years. All categories of patients are treated:
children and adults, with all types of malocclusions, privately
funded or funded by the Stockholm County Council. The clinic has
been under contract with the Stockholm County Council since 1995.
The main focus of operations is on advanced treatment – the moving
of teeth is not delegated to others but performed by an orthodontist
using modern technology – and longer intervals between visits make
it possible to treat patients living further away.
Quality efforts are carried out in accordance with the guidelines
issued by Praktikertjänst and the Stockholm County Council.

Accessibility
The clinic opened in 2009 and is in a very central location in Eskilstuna, on
Kungsgatan.
The central railway station is four or five minutes away on foot, and the bus square
is about two minutes away.
The clinic is on the second floor, above one of the town’s shopping malls. There is
an elevator in the stairwell. Those arriving by car may park in the Vildsvinet
parking garage, about three minutes from the clinic on foot, or in the parking lot by
the Mint (Myntverket), about three minutes away.
Other
We treat 600–700 patients each year at the clinic, and we accept children and adults
with all types of malocclusions. Referred patients are assigned appointments
immediately. At our therapy meetings every other week, we jointly plan and
discuss difficult treatments; when necessary we consult other specialist dentists,
with whom we have good and frequent working relations. We focus on the
patient’s needs and we use the best materials available on the market. For an extra
fee, we are able to offer clear aesthetic brackets.
The clinic staff perform certain types of dental technical work, which shortens
waiting times and reduces the number of visits that patients have to make. The
clinic has environmental certification.

Other
Our premises are bright and new, with digital case-record and X-ray systems.
The clinic has environmental certification and constantly strives to reduce its
environmental impact. The clinic has HBT certification.
We constantly follow up our treatments and regularly check the quality of our
treatment results using an international system, ‘ESAS’. Our staff perform dental
technical work at the clinic, which shortens waiting times and reduces the
number of visits that patients have to make. Several research projects are being
conducted at the clinic.
At the time of final check-up in 2011, 99% of our patients were happy both with
their treatment results and with how we had treated them in other respects.
We treat both children and adults. We work with other specialists in the Uppsala

in Uppsala and about 40 minutes away from the Arlanda Airport. It is easy
to find parking close to the clinic.
Other
All referred patients are immediately assigned an appointment for
orthodontic treatment at the clinic. The clinic follows up and uses the most
modern and also most well-tried treatment methods in the speciality field.
Quality/management systems in accordance with Qulan are used at the
clinic.
Patients are given SwedeQual-compliant questionnaires when they
have orthodontic apparatus removed and one year after the end of their
treatment. This makes it possible to monitor compliance with the goal
that one year after completion, at least 95% of orthodontic treatments
should have led to a bite function which remains good as well as to an
aesthetically acceptable result.
The clinic has guidelines for emergency treatment of patients that can be
applied when necessary.
The clinic has an emergency kit and oxygen apparatus.

Other
The clinic operates as part of the Colosseum group, which has 24 clinics in
the Nordic countries. The Arboga clinic and its orthodontic operations
started in the autumn of 2012. Treatments are carried out by a specialist
with more than 20 years’ experience.
All categories of patients are treated: children and adults with all types of
malocclusions, with private funding or funded by the Västmanland County
Council. The main focus of operations is on advanced treatment with
aesthetic options. Please see our website for information about options
(www.ortendahl.com). We use the most modern materials available on the
market and develop new ones ourselves. With these techniques, patients
can wait longer between visits.
Within Colosseum, a number of specialities are represented. The staff at
the clinic also includes orthodontic assistants with more than 30 years’
experience. We have been engaged in product development within
orthodontic care for many years, meaning that we offer all of the new
things. We have many years’ experience of knowledge development and
work systematically on quality and environmental issues. Our specialist
was the first person in Sweden to obtain quality certification (ISO) for
orthodontic operations.
The clinic has its own CBCT X-ray equipment, which very few Swedish
orthodontic clinics do. Dental technical work is carried out at the clinic,
which is convenient for patients.
The waiting time for treatment is six to eight weeks.
