Free choice of orthodontists in Västmanland 12 May 2014 Choosing your provider of orthodontic treatment How do you make your choice? This leaflet contains information about the various treatment providers that have signed contracts with the Västmanland County Council, as well as brief information about the different treatment methods. Once you have read this information, let the Dental Care Unit of the Västmanland County Council know who you want to perform your orthodontic treatment. Types of orthodontic treatment Basically, there are two types of treatment: Removable dental braces, which can be taken out of the mouth for cleaning. Such braces are sometimes worn only at night, sometimes all the time. Fixed dental braces on one or both jaws. As the name indicates, these braces cannot be removed. Sometimes you will first have to use one type of braces and then the other. When the teeth have moved far enough, a retainer wire on the back of the teeth or removable braces are often used to keep them in place so that they will not move after the orthodontic treatment is finished. More about treatments and what you should keep in mind General It is important to stay in touch with your regular dentist even if you get braces. If you need to have a tooth removed or ground down, he or she will assist in that. When you get braces The first few days after you get braces or after your braces have been adjusted, your teeth will be tender. This is perfectly natural, as the purpose of the braces is to move the teeth. You can expect to have difficulty chewing and a tense feeling in your mouth for two or three days. Braces may also cause a sore. The usual method is to apply some soft wax to the part of the braces that feels sharp. Then the sore will usually heal in a few days. Extra important to keep your mouth clean Having braces always means that you must be particularly careful about dental hygiene. Ropy and sticky objects easily get stuck in the braces, and it is hard to keep clean around fixed braces. In other words, you have to brush your teeth particularly carefully while you are wearing braces. Reimbursement of travel costs Whether you get removable or fixed braces, they will have to be adjusted and checked every five to twelve weeks. The treatment lasts between one and three years, so there will be quite a few visits to the orthodontist. According to the applicable rules as of November 2011, the cost of travel outside Västmanland is not reimbursed. If you have questions relating to the reimbursement of travel costs, please call Samtrafik on 021-17 53 30.
