INTRODUCTION FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Welcome to the first annual report of The Burlington Performing Arts Centre – a report that will become a
regular feature of our communication to our various stakeholder groups.
By means of this report, your Board of Directors and Management Group will provide information on both
the results of our operations, and our anticipated activities for the upcoming season.
But that raises the question – how should our results be evaluated? The answer is, we have several goals,
and we should be judged on our achievement of each of them.
In no particular order (since readers can honestly have varying priorities), we must attract visitors; we must
achieve financial results; we must bring in significant rental activity; and we must engage local performers
and performing groups at The Centre, giving them an opportunity to entertain their supporters in this
magnificent facility.
We believe we have made impressive strides in all these areas, in just a few short years. And we believe
our future is bright, that we will continue to make a growing and responsible contribution to the quality of
life in Burlington.
Your Board of Directors hopes and trusts that you find this report informative, and that the information it
discloses supports our conviction that The Centre has become both a significant and important part of the
social and cultural life of Burlington.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
Our 2013 season has seen a steady growth in both rentals and The Burlington Performing Arts Centre
Presents programming. Attendance increased from 68,597 in 2012 to 77,597 in 2013. This number does
not include all the wonderful performers who have performed on our stage, whose numbers are in
the thousands as well. Uses of The Centre have also increased from 285 in 2012 to 317 in 2013. Of the 317
uses, 162 were rentals to non-profit organizations, 105 rentals to commercial renters and 50 for our own
presenting program.
We have also seen continuing growth in our arts education program. This program provides the same
access to the arts as children experience in major cities like Toronto. This past year students have attended
performances like Scrap Arts Music, The Gruffalo, and The Very Hungry Caterpillar in addition to workshops,
teacher development, technical and front of house internships. We have also made tickets available to
students who otherwise could not afford them through our Golden Ticket Program.
Highlights in the 2013 presenting series include comedian Brent Butt, the late Peter Appleyard, Ladysmith
Black Mambazo, Natalie MacMaster, Bruce Cockburn, Jesse Cook, Ballet BC and Les Ballets jazz de
Montréal, Gino Vannelli, Leahy and Colm Wilkinson, just to name a few of the outstanding performances.
Finally I would like to thank all of our donors, sponsors, volunteers and Board members. Their generosity
in time, expertise and financial support make everything that we do at The Burlington Performing Arts
Centre possible.

COLLECTIVE USE
of The Centre
PROGRAMS
The Burlington Performing Arts Centre presenting season featured over 50 performances for children,
family and adult audiences across six series of events. The “Presents” series represents those performances
where The Centre hires the artists, markets the events, and takes the risk for profits or losses. Attendance
for these performances was 19,322 with net ticket sales of $790,649. This represents an increase of 4,810
ticket purchases and $232,351 in ticket revenue over 2012. Highlights in 2013 included performances
by comedian Brent Butt, late jazz musician Peter Appleyard, musicians Nelly Furtado, Ladysmith Black
Mambazo, Natalie MacMaster, Bruce Cockburn, Robert Cray, Gino Vannelli, Joel Plaskett, Colm Wilkinson,
Leahy Family and dance companies Ballet BC, Les Ballets jazz de Montréal and the Nureyev State Ballet
Theatre performing The Nutcracker, just to name a few of the incredible performances that took place on
our stages in 2013.

at The Centre
COMMUNITY RENTALS & COMMERCIAL PRODUCTIONS
A wide variety of new and returning clients performed within The Centre’s theatre in 2013. These included
cultural performances and festivals, dance competitions and recitals, Halton District Schools Board music,
drama and dance productions, as well as theatrical productions, choral and band performances, classical
music concerts and corporate presentations.

EDUCATION
Outreach Programs
EDUCATION OUTREACH PROJECT
The Education Outreach Project is a three-year project, funded by The Ontario Trillium Foundation, that
started in January 2012 and will continue until December 2014. The purpose of the Education Outreach
Project is to create an on-going partnership with the local education community that will result in lasting
opportunities for students, educators and parents to experience live professional performances in a
world-class theatre setting. The Project has implemented six (6) core projects to realize its goal:
1. Elementary and Secondary School Performance Series (Field Trips)
a. Matinee performances that are specifically programmed to reflect the Ontario Curriculum are
made available during the weekday. Students attend performances at a highly reduced fee of
$9.50 per ticket.
2. Student Workshops/Engagement
a. In-school workshops are programmed to extend the dialogue beyond the theatre walls, into the
classroom and school community.
3. Teacher Professional Development
a. Workshops are designed to help elementary teachers use drama and movement as learning tools in
the classroom.
4. Golden Ticket Program
a. This program facilitates the distribution of free tickets to schools that would otherwise not be able to
access a live theatrical performance. This program is delivered in partnership with the Halton District
School Board and the Halton Learning Foundation.
5. Theatre Industry Mentorship Program
a. A program specific to secondary students interested in pursuing a career in the theatre industry.
This program includes Co-operative Placements in Technical Production and Hospitality/Event
Coordination, Technical Workshops and a Theatre Industry Career Day.
6. Audience Development (Previews & Open Houses)
a. Annual Educator Previews and other special events encourage ongoing partnerships between local
district school boards and The Centre resulting in higher awareness of the project, participation in
events and ticket sales.

THEATRE INDUSTRY MENTORSHIP PROGRAM AT THE
BURLINGTON PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE
The Burlington Performing Arts Centre is a hub of cultural activity and we are passionate in our support of
the next generation of theatre industry professionals. This passion has developed over the years into a
very unique branch of our Education Outreach Program that now encompasses co-operative placements,
workshops and a career day for those secondary students interested in a career in the theatre industry
(SHSM students are encouraged).
Co-operative Placement: Back of House
Technical Production
A full-semester placement offering hands-on experience to senior students interested in working
backstage in Technical Services. The Centre’s Technical Staff will mentor the successful candidate and
provide training in the myriad of production duties.
Co-operative Placement: Front of House
Hospitality and Event Coordination
Another full-semester placement providing an opportunity for students to work in a non-technical environment.
Under the mentorship of the Audience Services Manager, the student will learn about special event planning,
hospitality, catering, artist liaison and accommodations.
Technical Workshops
Production, Light & Sound: An Introductory Workshop
Small groups of students work collaboratively with members of the Technical Services team to explore
staging, rigging, lighting design, sound engineering and tour management. Students leave with a greater
understanding of the various roles of a theatre technician.
Theatre Industry Career Day
Career Day is a fantastic opportunity for students to interact with some of today’s top industry professionals.
Whether it’s a writer, a marketer, stage manager or a lighting technician, each professional contributes
something to an audience’s theatre experience. A fascinating array of guests will explore how a performance
starts as a creative idea and becomes a tangible performance on stage. Intimate break-out sessions,
interactive stations, informal talks as well as a Marketplace of post-secondary institutions offering theatre
related programming will offer student as chance to explore the varied opportunities in the theatre industry.

DANCE OUTREACH 2013
The Burlington Performing Arts Centre receives a
grant from The Ontario Arts Council to participate
in the Ontario Dances Program. Ontario Dances
seeks to have more dance performances in
Ontario communities and more people engaged,
interested and invested in dance at a local level in
our province. The program aims to increase the range
and diversity of dance available to communities in
Ontario outside of the city of Toronto.
Ontario Dances offers the public the opportunity
to participate in dance at all levels from dance
classes and workshops to dance artists in residence
to the presentation of dance by Ontario-based
professional dance artists.
Ontario Dances is about:
• Audience development: providing opportunities
for more people to take part in dance as both
audiences and participants through performances
and arts education or learning programs.
• Curatorial development: enabling arts presenters
to take part in professional development
programs and networking opportunities that
expand their knowledge of dance in Ontario.
• Presentation of Ontario dance artists: supporting
arts presenters to undertake artistic risks that
engage their audiences in new experiences in
dance from Ontario’s dance artists in all dance
genres including contemporary and classical
dance expressions of all world cultures.
The Burlington Performing Arts Centre offered several
intensive dance outreach activities during 2013.

Tap Dance Outreach with Shawn Byfield

We are excited to present the very first Tap Dance
Outreach to local dancers, beginner to Advanced
level, with amazing dancer Shawn Byfield. Dora
Award winning choreographer Shawn Byfield
is a veteran of TV & film, and an internationally
renowned tap dance & hip hop dance instructor.
He’s a 2007 Gemini Award Nominee, Co-Director of
Thrive! Entertainment and Director of Funk Factory,
Canada’s National Tap Dance Ensemble.
Renowned contemporary dancer/choreographer
Peggy Baker performs “Disappearance of Right
and Left”, followed by a Q&A and ending with a 90
minute Masterclass for teens and adults.
Contemporary Residency
with Laurence Lemieux from
Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie
February/March 2013
An opportunity for local dancers to work directly
with a professional Toronto choreographer,
Laurence Lemieux. Auditions were held on
February 25 for this amazing opportunity to learn
a new piece and the chosen dancers performed
the piece at The Burlington Performing Arts Centre
before the Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie
performance on March 6, 2013.
Born in Edmonton Alberta in 1952, Ms. Baker began
her professional career in Toronto, in 1974, as a
founding member, and later artistic director, of
Toronto’s Dancemakers, where she participated in
more than 50 premieres by Canadian choreographers
and contributed three works to the repertoire. She
toured internationally as a prominent member of
Lar Lubovitch’s celebrated New York company
throughout the eighties and joined Mikhail
Baryshnikov and Mark Morris for the inaugural
season of their White Oak Dance Project in 1990.
Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal
Wednesday, November 20, 2013
Teaching dance is a priority for Les Ballets jazz de
Montréal (BJM). BJM’s professional team of dances
offered an introductory and exploratory masterclass
to local dancers in the Community Studio Theatre
in the afternoon as well as a talk back session with
the audience immediately following the evening
performance on November 20th. This is a unique
opportunity to encounter the ideas of young
creators who are well on their way to become the
leading choreographers of tomorrow.

Results
FINANCIAL SUMMARY
The 2013 fiscal year was very successful with The Burlington Performing Arts Centre generating a net revenue
of $179,416. Out of that net revenue $101,070 is a contribution to the capital renewal fund that is generated
by the $1.50 surcharge to every ticket sold at The Burlington Performing Arts Centre, $40,000 to the capital
reserve fund from a transfer from the capital campaign, $5,279 is a contribution to the donation reserve fund
with the balance of net revenue used for the purchase of tangible capital assets less amortization expense
for the year. Additionally The Burlington Performing Arts Centre used only $740,995 of City funding out of the
$994,260 allocated. Please note that ticket sales revenue are only for “BPAC Presents”and does not include
$639,156 in rental ticket sales revenue, all figures net of HST and service charges.

THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS
One hundred and twenty three citizens strong, our volunteer team has delivered first rate experiences
to the thousands of men, women and children who have attended the Theatre in our 2013 season.
Serving as ticket takers, ambassadors, ushers, coat check attendants, merchandise assistants, hospitality
and housekeeping helpers and much more, these volunteers have logged over 11,200 hours. An increase
over the previous season by 498 logged hours.
Seventy of our current volunteers have been with us since our opening season and eight of whom have
individually dedicated more than 200 hours in this season alone. Refresher training was provided this past
fall to our existing team, and we aim to expand our crew and diversity of roles this summer, recruiting
another 50-100 volunteers. We now look forward to recognizing and celebrating our team’s achievements
in July at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Party.
