A Art Scene Art scene in Yuma The Muses who inspire the arts must also love the desert climate. That’s because Yuma seems to boast more than its share of theatrical performances, concerts, art shows, painting classes and clubs for artists. In Yuma, the Arts and Culture Division of the Yuma Parks and Recreation Department allows the public to take part in a variety of arts classes and workshops at the Yuma Art Center. The art center, located at 254 Main St., also hosts numerous art exhibits, which are organized by the Yuma Fine Arts Association. In addition to recreational outdoor activities, Parks and Recreation also offers arts classes and programs everywhere from art galleries and classrooms to recreational centers and parks. A variety of concerts, plays and other performing arts presentations take place next door at the Historic Yuma Theatre throughout the year. The theater offers its stage to local productions, as well as theatrical and musical productions touring coast to coast. Several theater companies in Yuma serve residents who enjoy onstage comedy, drama and musical performances, Rehearsal for a Yuma Community Theater stage production and the Arizona Western College Theatre stages performances throughout the school year. Theatrical groups in the area include Yuma Community Theater and Arizona Western College Theater. Dance groups and studios include Ballet Yuma, Dance Etc., Dancemakers, Dawn’s Dance Studio, Jazz of Yuma, Yuma Ballet Academy and Yuma Ballet Theatre and Performing Arts. Local seniors and winter visitors also love the classes and dances offered by Golden Roadrunners and the Yuma Square and Round Dance Association. And whether residents like rock, jazz, country, orchestral or classical music or something else, numerous bands and groups perform throughout the area. Students of AWC and the area’s high schools also display their talents in performances for the public. The Village Jazz Series brings musicians from the national jazz scene to Yuma every winter for free outdoor concerts at the Yuma Palms Regional Center.
