STAGES Theatre +
The Black Madonna Shrine
August 3, 2016
On our way to the theatre we’ll visit The Black Madonna Shrine in Pacific,
constructed in 1938 by Brother Bronislaus, a Polish Native, of the
Franciscan order. The shrine is dedicated to The Black Madonna of
Czestochowa and the image is referred as the Black Madonna because
of its dark brown skin tones. Walkways from an open-air chapel lead to seven grottos made of barite rock from
Old Mines, Mo., with some sea shells, costume jewelry, even cupcake molds mixed in through imagination and
inspiration.
At STAGES Theatre in Kirkwood, you will see one of their most frequently requested shows, THE DROWSY
CHAPERONE – a musical taking place when a die-hard musical theatre fan plays his favorite cast album and
the characters come to life. The characters appear in his dingy apartment, and it is transformed into an
impressive Broadway set with seashell footlights, sparkling furniture, painted backdrops, and glitzy costumes.
This hilarious musical farce won the most Tony Awards of any musical on Broadway in 2006 (including Best
Book and Best Original Score), and was hailed by New York Magazine as “The Perfect Broadway Musical”.
We’ll have lunch at Billy G’s in picturesque downtown Kirkwood.
