Chair Overview It is testament to what a fabulous team we have at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) – my fellow board members, the CEO and his executive
team and staff generally – and I can say with great pride that
QPAC has had one of its best years ever
Financially, artistically, technically and in the important servicing of our many patrons and users of our facilities, we have excelled. A major marker of the year was surpassing
our milestone
one million visitors for the 2011-12 financial year. There have been four major musicals in the Lyric Theatre – MARY POPPINS,
ANNIE, JERSEY BOYS and A CHORUS LINE. In particular, MARY POPPINS was a huge success for QPAC and was our highest selling musical in over a decade.

QUEENSLAND PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE (QPAC)
is Queensland’s premier performing arts venue and a statutory body of the Queensland Government.
Since opening in 1985, with the purpose to contribute to the cultural, social and intellectual development
of all Queenslanders, QPAC has grown into one of the most recognised performing arts centres in the Asia
Pacific and one of the driving forces of Queensland’s reputation as an exciting and innovative cultural hub.
QPAC’s live performance program reflects a commitment to excellence and diversity and includes works
produced or presented by QPAC as well as those presented by others. QPAC regularly collaborates with
artists, companies, producers and presenters from local and national companies and from around the
world to create a dynamic live performance culture throughout Brisbane and the state.
QPAC operates across both the commercial and public sectors, managing the Centre to deliver
financial return and fulfil its cultural and social functions. QPAC owns and operates its own ticketing
service, qtix, as well as all its food and beverage retail operations and also invests in major musical
theatre productions.
At the heart of QPAC’s activities is the aim to cultivate excellence in cultural thinking and to be a place
that is readily accessible, filled with people learning, exploring and having fun.

Welcome to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre’s
2012 Review.
Queensland is fast becoming known for hosting exclusive
performances from the world’s best arts companies.
The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) was
a hub for live performance throughout the year. In 2012
there were more than 1300 performances throughout
the Centre. With such a high level of activity it’s no wonder
QPAC reached a milestone in 2012 by welcoming more than
one million people – well done. As you browse the pages
of this book you will see the diverse range of performances
and events that are presented at QPAC.
QPAC is expanding its reach to audiences around the state
through digital technology and in 2012 there were two very
successful live simulcasts which reached audiences in
regional communities around Queensland. Through this
technology QPAC reached out to new and different audiences
and ensured arts performances for all Queenslanders.
QPAC is an important part of Queensland’s tourism industry
and exclusive blockbuster performances such as The
Hamburg Season highlight QPAC’s role in boosting cultural
tourism and making Brisbane a cultural hub, by attracting
visitors from outside Brisbane and the state. By building
on this brand, through the QPAC International Series,
I enjoy visiting QPAC and I look forward to many more
entertaining experiences at this leading performing arts
centre. Congratulations to the Board and staff of QPAC for a
wonderful year in 2012 and best wishes for 2013.

Culture, in all its forms is central to making a city appealing and dynamic. Brisbane’s South Bank has been the cultural
heart of Brisbane for many years – a leisure and education corridor encompassing the Cultural Precinct, parklands,
university and college campuses, as well as retail, restaurants and residential buildings. In 2012 South Bank has expanded
and changed once again.
ABC Queensland headquarters officially opened at the beginning of the year and was the first in a series of physical
changes that has rejuvenated the Russell Street end of QPAC. The ABC building became home to the Queensland
Symphony Orchestra in December with office accommodation and a practice studio.

With the reopening of Russell Street later in the year, we launched the Russell
Street Wine Bar which has proved a popular addition to the Playhouse foyer.
The Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre expanded its capacity with
a development onto Grey Street and has further contributed to the physical
presence that South Bank is Brisbane’s home of live entertainment.

BLOODLAND was a collaboration between QPAC, Bangarra Dance Theatre and Queensland Theatre Company.
An original work by Stephen Page and Wayne Blair, Bloodland featured twelve Indigenous performers
who fused traditional languages with Pidgin English along with dance and song to tell their story.
This was a significant production for QPAC.

titled: OPERA IN AUSTRALIA: IDEAS FOR THE FUTURE
at the World Theatre Forum. The Forum, hosted by
China’s National Centre for Performing Arts in Beijing,
brought together leading arts managers from around
the world to discuss current issues and trends.
Emeritus Professor Colin Mackerras AO, a pre-eminent
scholar in Chinese culture, spoke to QPAC staff about
working in China. With a particular focus on opera,
Professor Mackerras took staff through traditional and
modern pieces, their relevance and their links with
Chinese culture overall.
QPAC held a two day forum with Harvard Professor
Mark Moore exploring the ways public institutions
create value for citizens. Professor Moore led
workshops, gave a free public lecture, attended by
over 400 people and was a panellist in a discussion
for ABC Radio National’s BIG IDEAS program along
with Paul Barclay, Professor Julianne Schultz AM
and QPAC Trustee and Director of White Retail
Group, Rhonda White.

Over the course of a year QPAC invests in major musical theatre productions touring Australia and in 2012
invested in ANNIE THE MUSICAL. This well-loved story of a cheeky little orphan who seeks an escape from
her ‘hard knock life’ was a tremendous success in Brisbane and on tour around the country. Featuring some
of Australia’s great stage performers alongside 21 Queensland girls in the Brisbane
production in supporting roles, audiences loved the show
with sold out performances.

KITE Arts Education Program @ QPAC, an early childhood arts education
initiative of the Queensland Department of Education, Training and
Employment (DETE) in partnership with QPAC, delivered relevant and
contemporary arts education experiences for Prep to Year 3 students and
teachers across Queensland. With support from the Australia Council’s
Creative Community Partnerships Initiative from 2008, KITE was able to
expand its reach.

In 2012 KITE delivered its sixth and final residency to 80 students from Bundaberg Central, Burnett Heads and Elliott
Heads State Schools. The residency culminated in a performance entitled Plunge at the Moncrieff Theatre to an
audience of 550. Students in the performance remarked on their excitement at having the opportunity to perform on
stage. Teachers noted the confidence it gave some students and the flow on effect to other subject areas; and parents
agreed it was a great experience for their children.

was established by QPAC as a way to connect young children to the
performing arts and today the Festival is one of the biggest and
internationally recognised children’s festivals in the world.
The Centre was taken over by thousands of children under eight, their parents, teachers and carers who attended
70 in-theatre performances, 90 free events and 125 workshops over one week presented across the Cultural Precinct.
Engaging with and giving children arts experiences early in life is important. There is a strong body of evidence that
supports arts-based learning, especially in young children and this was a theme explored in the adult component of OOTB
– the CONNECTING THE DOTS… SYMPOSIUM facilitated by QPAC’s Scholar in Residence, Dr Judith McLean with keynote
speakers Dr Tina Payne-Bryson, child psychologist and Dr Jude Kelly, Artistic Director, Southbank Centre, London.
Three performances were specifically commissioned by QPAC and premiered at this anniversary festival: THE FLYING
ORCHESTRA, STRADBROKE DREAMTIME, and INVISIBLE ME. These commissioned works, all based on books, coincided
with the National Year of Reading.
As always the OOTB volunteers were integral to the smooth operation of the Festival and this year there were over
400 volunteers who lent their time, energy and patience to ensuring the Festival’s success.

area of growth for QPAC.
QPAC sells 64% of tickets via the QPAC website and, with recent upgrades to
the website patrons can now print tickets at home, access the website from

QPAC is the first performing arts venue in Australia to have “photoview” seating which
allows patrons to see the view from different seats in the theatre before booking.

The TONY GOULD GALLERY in the foyer of the Cremorne
Theatre provides a changing program of exhibitions curated
by the QPAC Museum. In 2012 people were invited to see the
transformation from book to stage with MARY & ME: Mary

Joan Sutherland’s 1965 Australian tour with LA STUPENDA

Alongside multi-performance seasons our program includes contemporary and popular music concerts and
performances from local and international comedians. Contemporary music and comedy are genres popular with
Brisbane audiences. Many performances sell out very quickly and attract audiences for their first visit to QPAC.
2012 featured a wide range of performances including those by Billy Bragg, Paul Kelly, Melissa Ethridge, Rufus
Wainwright, Macy Gray, Ed Sheeran, John Cleese, Ross Noble, Wayne Brady, Bill Bailey and Aziz Ansari.

In July QPAC lit up both inside and out. Inside the building JERSEY BOYS came to town and was highly popular
with most performances near capacity or sold out.
Outside, an urban garden sprang up in the Cultural Forecourt and the building lit up every night with images
from DELECTABLE QUEENSLAND. This festival showcased the state’s finest producers, growers, chefs,
gardeners, entertainers and musicians over two weeks.

RESURRECTION directed by the Australian conductor Simone Young, who is currently at the helm of two of the
Hamburg companies. The Hamburg Ballet performed NIJINSKY and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, both original
productions choreographed by The Hamburg Ballet’s acclaimed Artistic Director, John Neumeier.

The QPAC International Series is built on a residency model to maximise how visiting leading artists
connect with and inspire our local arts sector.
Local performers were able to take part in the Season through the specially formed Brisbane Mahler
Chorus, made up of 150 local voices, who accompanied the Hamburg companies in performing Mahler’s
Symphony No. 2, RESURRECTION; and performances of The Hamburg Ballet’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S
DREAM included eight local dancers with music performed by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

QPAC provided an educational aspect to the Season which included attending an open rehearsal
with the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Simone Young, a special expert Insight
performance with John Neumeier on his choreography of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
and an IN CONVERSATION SERIES in which leading experts uncovered some of the history,
artistry and skill behind the works being performed. The QPAC Blog Club followed the journeys
of four individuals with little or no prior experience of classical music or ballet; and a state-wide
competition ran through social media to search for Queensland’s Biggest Ballet Fan with the
winner treated to night in Brisbane to see The Hamburg Ballet perform.

The annual Brisbane Festival returned to QPAC once again and
provided a hub of activity in the building. The SANTOS GLNG CITY
OF LIGHTS lit up the Centre every night. QPAC’s outdoor club,
WUNDER BAR, featured emerging artists and musicians performing
to live, large crowds each night.

With a strong small to medium sector and leading major performing arts companies it makes sense that more than
half of our annual programming is from Queensland-based companies.
Our home companies – Opera Queensland, Queensland Ballet, Queensland Symphony Orchestra and Queensland
Theatre Company perform a large part of their annual seasons at the Centre. This year we welcomed new Artistic
Director, Li Cunxin to Queensland Ballet.

OCTOBER
QPAC is an important stop on many of the national performing arts companies annual touring schedule.
This year our audiences connected with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Australian Youth Orchestra
(led by Simone Young ahead of The Hamburg Season), the Australian Ballet, Musica Viva, Bangarra Dance Theatre
and welcomed back Opera Australia.

Thanks to the willingness of arts lovers across the state and digital technology QPAC was able to deliver our first live
simulcast in 2011. This year we delivered a further two live simulcasts to a growing list of centres across the state.
On 24 August, audiences in six regional venues, as well as QPAC’s Cultural Forecourt were part of the first QPAC
International Series when the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra performed Mahler’s Symphony No.2, RESURRECTION
under the deft hand of conductor Simone Young.
The second simulcast came via The Arts Centre in Melbourne to nine Queensland locations including Brisbane. Opera
Australia’s production of Puccini’s much loved MADAMA BUTTERFLY attracted the largest numbers of any simulcast to date.

QPAC produced the Educators Performing Arts Market (EPAM) which brought together practitioners,
performers and producers from around the state. EPAM is designed as a marketplace to support
individual discussions between producers and more than 100 teachers and is an important link
in the chain from artist to student.
NOVEMBER
The sixth annual Asia Pacific Screen Awards ceremony lit up the Playhouse and brought together the best
filmmakers from the Asia Pacific region to celebrate a year in film. Established in 2007, Asia Pacific Screen
Awards celebrates the cinematic excellence and cultural origins of 70 countries and areas – a region
responsible for half the world’s film.
SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS is a signature QPAC concert series marking the festive season and bringing the
Brisbane community together for a joyous evening of music and song. Presented by QPAC since 1985
this concert is a favourite for families.
The Queensland Symphony Orchestra accompanied stars Simon Gleeson and Alinta Chidzey and the
160 voice Spirit of Christmas Choir, made up of members from the QPAC Choir, Brisbane Chorale and
Brisbane Birralee Voices.
