Morris, Artistic Director The Ensemble Theatre 3535 Main Street • Houston, TX 77002 713-520-0055 • fax 713-520-1269 The mission of The Ensemble Theatre is to preserve African-American artistic expression; to enlighten, entertain and enrich a diverse community. www.EnsembleHouston.com 4 Influenced by the African American Theatre movement of the 1960s and 70s, George Hawkins founded a black theatre company in 1976 in Houston, Texas. He observed that professional roles were few and far between for black actors, and his frustration led him to create his own company, then known as The Black Ensemble Company. Hawkins’ goal was to create a theatre that would provide diverse roles for black artists. Determined to move his theatre in a direction different from other mainstream theatres, Hawkins focused on themes about black life. He located a building to use as a storefront theatre on Tuam Street, and renamed the company The Ensemble Theatre. In 1985, the theatre moved to Main Street and grew each year thereafter. Hawkins George Hawkins - Founder continued his goal to establish a ‘place and space’ where artists and the larger community could receive technical training and have expanded employment opportunities while providing a theatrical education for Houstonians and residents in surrounding counties. In the years that followed, The Ensemble played the role of social liaison between the Houston community and the black theatre experience. George Hawkins passed away in 1990 but his dream, drive, and passion continue under superb leadership and community support. The Ensemble Theatre is one of a few professional theaters in the region dedicated to the production of works portraying the African American experience. It is the oldest and largest professional African American theatre in the Southwest and it holds the distinction of being one of the nation’s largest African American theatres owning and operating its facility and producing in-house. Board President Emeritus Audrey Lawson led the capital campaign for The Ensemble’s $4.5 million building renovations that concluded in 1997. The programs and operations of The Ensemble Theatre benefit a multicultural audience that is diverse in age, income, ethnicity, and culture. The Ensemble Theatre produces a Mainstage Season of contemporary and classical works devoted to the portrayal of the African American experience by local and national playwrights and artists. The Ensemble Theatre’s Performing Arts Education program provides educational workshops, artist-in-residence experiences, and live performances for students both off-site and at the theatre. Also, the Young Performers Program offers intensive summer training for youth ages 6 to 17 encompassing instruction in all disciplines of the theatre arts. Through its varied programs, The Ensemble Theatre benefits an audience and artistic constituency of over 65,000 people annually. The Ensemble Theatre has surpassed the vision of its founder and continues to expand and create innovative programs to bring African American theatre to a myriad of audiences, and is truly one of Houston’s finest historical cultural institutions. 5 Janette L. CINDERELLA, PRINCE & COMPANY 16 ABOUT THE COMPOSER Carlton Leake One might say the Performing Arts hemmed the natural tapestry of Memphis, Tennessee native Carlton Leake’s total being. Well-versed and well trained in all artistic genres, he began his professional career at the age 14 when he played bass guitar for Erma Clanton’s theatrical production An Evening of Soul. Soon thereafter, he became the musical director and pianist of that same production. Since then, Carlton has assembled a successful 30-year career around the world. While touring, he assumed the role of a actor/singer, musician and/or musical director for many shows including, Dreamgirls, The Wiz, Grease, West Side Story, Cabaret, Sophisticated Ladies, Blues in the Night and Five Guys Named Moe. Carlton’s career highlights include his work as guest composer for the Columbus Symphony Orchestra’s Christmas Concert, where four compositions from his Christmas Cantata, The Savior Has Come, thrilled audiences in 2001. He composed the original score for Blair Underwood’s movie short The Second Coming and music for Underwood’s one-man show IM4, in 1993 and 2004 respectively. In 2006, he was the musical director for the Off-Broadway production The Love Show, starring T.C. Carson. And in 2011, Carlton turned the play Cinderella by the African-American Shakespeare Company into a successful musical with 21 of his new compositions. Also an accomplished playwright, Carlton penned the book to the musical revue When Music Was Music. His own musicals includes Shalavy, Coretta…The Other Side of the Dream, the highly acclaimed Vietnam War soldier story Two Wars, The Twelve Ways of Christmas, and Black Man Live Again, the one-man show starring Ronald McCall. His future plans include his new musical NKOSAZANA: Princess Cinderella scheduled to premiere in 2012 in Memphis, Tennessee. Composer’S Notes For many of us, the story of Cinderella captivates our hearts and imaginations in unique ways. As circumstances create changes throughout the course of our lives, likewise, our perceptions tend toward change as well. I pray that in whatever way you receive Cinderella; hopefully, I have been successful in helping to give another voice for true love. It is my utmost honor to salute Eileen Morris, Artistic Director of The Ensemble 17 Theatre, along with her incredible staff for their tireless efforts and unyielding commitment to excellence. We have been blessed yet again with a magnificent cast and production staff. Patdro has traveled the world as choreographer and lead dancer for the incomparable Stevie Wonder. He has worked with such artists as The SOS Band, TC Carson, Daryl Coley, Yolanda Adams, and India Arie. His talents were also showcased as Choreographer and Movement Specialist in Toni Morrison’s world premiere opera, Margaret Garner. He choreographed the Tony Award-winning Broadway hit A Raisin in the Sun starring Sean Combs and Phylicia Rashad. Mr. Harris earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Alabama State University. In his current home of Atlanta, Georgia he has served on many arts committees including the Georgia Council for the Arts, and the Advisory Dance Panel for the Bureau of Cultural Affairs. He holds to his credit the 1996 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Choreography and has been honored with a nomination for the same award for Best Supporting Actor. He also received a 2002 Drammy Award for Best Choreography and the 2007 Dance Ministry Magazine’s Trailblazer Award for Dance Choreographer of the Year. In 2009 he received the Suzi Award for Outstanding Choreography and Best Ensemble Musical. He has received a 2009, 2010, & 2011 Giorgee Award for Best Director and Best Show. Director’s Notes ABOUT THE DIRECTOR Patdro Harris As an accomplished Writer, Producer and Director, Cliff Patdro Harris (Director/ Broadway Choreographer/Writer) has combined his directing, chorographical and writing skills to become one of the most innovative and creative talents of our time. He is nationally and internationally recognized and respected by colleagues, critics, and fans. He was voted “...Best Director” by the Star Tribune Minneapolis. The Washington Post hails him as a “superb choreographer”. The New York Times applauds his artistry as “praiseworthy”. Since she was a small child she’s always had a strong passion for dancing, acting, singing and public speaking. Her dance experience began through the church, in the God’s Anointed and Appointed Praise Dance Ministry. In addition to her 10 years of service to God through dance, her love for dance led her to train at the Metropolitan Dance Theater, Dance United Christian school of Dance, and Center Stage Dance Academy. Troi also has a passion for writing. She writes plays, poetry, and short stories in her spare time in hopes to bring glory to God and witness to His people. She trained in the Young Performer’s Program at The Ensemble Theatre for two years where she played Mama in an excerpt of A Raisin in the Sun and starred as Afrika in an original play entitled I Thought You Knew. She was last seen in The Ensemble holiday hit, Cinderella. Kendrick “Kay” Brown (Page) born in Shreveport, Louisiana, but raised in Houston, Texas, and has had the privilege of performing in many theatrical productions, such as: Gee’s Bend, Cinderella, Stick Fly, Christmas with Great Aunt, Livin’ Fat, The Toilet (NYC), Blue, One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show (Giorgee Award), A Lesson Before Dying, Bury the Dead, Before it Hits Home, Miss Evers’ Boys, and many others. Kay is also the artistic director and co-founder of the Black Box Theatre Group, a theatre company geared towards introducing a higher grade of theatre production through service learning and implementation, becoming a center of education, culture, and contribution. She is elated to return as the Fairy Godmother in this production. Before 2010, she last performed in the productions of Pure Gospel Christmas I & II in 2005 in which she received a Giorgee Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy/Musical. Other Ensemble productions are Black Nativity, They Sing Christmas Up in Harlem, and Harlem After Hours. Rennette enjoyed performing as Effie in Dreamgirls at the Great Caruso Dinner Theatre, as well as Dream of Doors, (Express Theatre), Shout Hallelujah (Encore Theatre,) Just a Little Mark, Saving Grace, Snapshots of Broken Dolls (Houston Suitcase Theatre) and The Waiting Room at The University of Houston. She is thrilled at the opportunity to work with Carlton Leake and Patdro Harris again, whom she credits for finding her ability to dance! Rennette is a proud graduate of Jesse H. Jones High School and Texas Southern University. She lives by Proverbs 3:5-6 as she works daily at Jack Yates High School teaching English III and is the debate coach. Currently, she serves as the choir director at the Riverside United Methodist Church. 20 Rachel Hemphill Dickson (Stepmother) is excited to be back with The Ensemble Theatre family. You may have seen her on The Ensemble Theatre stage here in the Giorgee award winning productions of Cinderella (Best Supporting Actress), American Menu (Best Ensemble). Teacake (Cinderella) has been mesmerizing audiences for many years as a singer, dancer, model, and actress both locally and internationally. She is happy to be back home after four extensive tours with Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean International. She was last seen in Gee’s Bend as Nella (Girogee Award Nominee for Best Supporting Actress, and the hit Holiday musical, Cinderella as Cinderella (Giorgee Award Nominee for Best Actress). Raiya Goodman (Shayla) is an energetic “triple threat” who enjoys singing, acting and dance. She has performed in The Ensemble productions of Cinderella, The Wiz and The Man Who Saved New Orleans (Hattie). Raiya has also been seen in the TUTS productions Little Shop of Horrors and My Son Pinocchio, Jr. Raiya is a part of The Ensemble’s Young Performers Program and has appeared in the productions of Kid Zero (Zero) and Sala Cinderella (Star Chief). 21 Tamara Harper (Zonita) is a native Houstonian who has traveled the world both as a military brat and as a former flight attendant. She began her formal dance training at the University of Houston. She was seen last in Jesus Christ Superstar starring Ben Vereen and The Ensemble season holiday hit, Cinderella and 2009 summer hitThe Wiz. In December 2003, she began her professional dancing career with Kuumba House African Dance Theatre, and has since performed with Second Generation Dance Co., Exclamation Dance Co., WonLande West African Dance & Drum Co., Stages Repertory Theatre, The Ensemble Theatre, and choreographed for churches and many other independently owned performing arts companies. She taught and choreographed for The Ensemble’s YP Program in the summer of 2005, 2006, and 2009. Tamara has now made her home at Rayford Intermediate with Aldine ISD. currently working toward a career in the recording and musical theatre industries. Although Alex’s background is in vocal training, he looks forward to many more great years in every aspect of the performing arts as a platform to be a voice of change in the community and the world. Vincent E. James (Lord/Ensemble) is a native of Houston Tx. His Ensemble Theatre appearances include Joseph in The Black Nativity, The Twelve Ways Of Christmas, The Wiz and Cinderella. He studied for five years with Sallie Bowie Daniels and continued with the Ben Stevenson/Houston Ballet Academy after graduating from HSPVA. He studied on scholarship at the University of the Arts then went on to dance with the Joan Karff New Dance Group and the Dallas Black Dance Theatre. Currently, he is a guest artist and instructor with Ballet Forte/Sugar Land and he’s also a principle dancer with The Lula Elzy New Orleans Dance Theatre. He also is a guest artist with the Fountain of Modern Music. Tranice Shelton (Sherena) has been dancing and singing since she was 5 years old. She is currently a senior at J. Frank Dobie High School. She has been in many school productions and participates as a J. Frank Dobie High School Cheerleader and a Beverly Hills Intermediate Cheerleader. She danced with Hill Street Blues Dance Co. for two years, and FLY Dance Co. for three years. She is a part of the varsity choir at Dobie High School and has participated in a production in the San Jacinto College Drama Dept. Tranice was the first place winner of “New Faith’s Got Talent” and was also a part of The Ensemble Theatre’s Young Performers Program where she fell in love with the art of acting. Ron Johnson (Duke/Young Cinderella’s Father) also known as “Ron John,” is a native Houstonian and has been singing for most of his life. He has discovered a hidden gift and new found passion for acting. He has appeared in the highly acclaimed stage plays, Cinderella, Love Never Fails, I Can’t Fight the Feeling, Will You Take this Man, The Value of a Man, Trading Places, Chronicle of 4 Mothers & 4 Father’s, Only God Can Judge Me, When Sist’us Cry and most recent, He Is, the gospel adaption of The Wiz by Faythjo Productions! He is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX, with a dual Bachelor of Science Degree in Marketing/Management and Journalism/Public Relations. He’s also an active member of the Men of God Christian Fraternity Inc, where he serves on the National Executive Board, as the South Regional Director for Undergraduate Chapters. Alex Kennedy (Prince Charming) a Houston native, is currently involved in a plethora of professional music departments where his passion for the arts began at an early age. Alex made his professional theatre debut with Houston’s Ensemble Theatre in Christmas with Great Aunt by Thomas Meloncon. Other musical productions he has performed in include: The Boy Who Cried Wolf: The Opera (Houston Grand Opera), Little Shop of Horrors, and A Kidslife Musical. He is 22 Taylor Nelson (Young Cinderella) makes her debut on this stage. A recent graduate of Mark Twain Elementary, Taylor now attends Pershing Middle School. Most recently she participated in The Ensemble Theatre Summer Young Performers’ Program production Sundiata. Singing, dancing, and acting are the highlights of her day. Alkendria Smith (Ladies/Ensemble) is a spirited singer and talented songwriter from the hospitality state of Mississippi. This up and coming artist recently released her sophomore inspirational CD, “Liberation.” Alkendria developed an early fascination for stage plays at the age of eight after attending her first of many stage plays such as Dreamgirls starring Jennifer Holiday. However, years down the line, it was after attending the hit gospel play, Only the Strong starring Fred Hammond that she would witness her love for gospel music at work on the stage for the first time. This sparked an interest and later a desire for the stage. Whether singing or acting on the stage, Alkendria strongly desires to reach and inspire today’s youth, young adult and mature audiences using the arts as the platform to positively impact lives. Roenia Thompson (Shaniqua) is elated to be in another mainstage appearance at The Ensemble Theatre. Cynthia thanks God for her gifts, and her husband, Luis, and son, Luke, for their love and support. 24 Kenneth Brown Jr. (Duke/Young Cinderella’s Father, Page) is not a stranger to The Ensemble. He has worked behind the scenes for several seasons. He is excited to come from the back of the theatre to the front in his first main stage production. Kenneth received his BA in Theatre from Texas Southern University after being under the direction of C. Lee Turner at PVAMU. He is currently working on his Masters of Education in Counseling at PVAMU. He also plans on receiving his Doctorate degree in the near future. Kenneth has been a part of several productions; not only acting, but singing, dancing, and designing costumes. A limited reserve is based on availability. 25 ABOUT THE PRODUCTION STAFF Broderick “Brod. J” Jones (Stage Manager) is a veteran of every aspect of theatre and film. His body of work has covered many theatrical job titles including actor, director, light designer, set designer, as well as an accomplished stage manager. Brod. J has managed many touring productions including: Laura Mae, Lord Have Mercy; The Streets Can’t Have My Boys; and Don’t Drive Mama Away, all produced by The Master Theatre Company. He has produced and stage managed several shows at the Hobby Center for the Arts and The Wortham Theatre, including the hit gospel play When Mama Prays produced by J.B. Productions. He was also a resident actor and stage manager for productions at The Encore Theatre. Some of those productions included Shout Hallelujah, Medea, Women In Prison, Agnes of God, Shazell and Praise The Lord Raise The Roof. He has managed numerous special events at the Houston Children’s Museum, Harvest Time Church, Saint Agnes Church and Fall Brook Church. Larry Cooper (Hair/Make-Up Design) is an accomplished hair and make-up artist. He has been apart of the beauty business for 15 years. Originally from Houston Texas Larry moved to Wichita Kansas as a teenager where he received his license as a cosmetologist. Having trained with the best in the industry (Toni & Guy, Visible Changes, and other platform artists to name a few) he has walked away from various competitions victorious. In 2009 he took first and second place trophies home from the Outre and Harlem 125 hair shows; where his style, creativity, and technique set the stage on fire. Larry has done hair and makeup for stage and screen recently working on a Music Video for up and coming artist A.T with his friend and partner Roenia Thompson and also the Gospel Stage Play Behind Closed Doors featuring Stellar award winner and Grammy Nominee Maurette Brown Clark. Macy received her undergraduate degree in Apparel and Textiles and a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Design from Utah State University. James V. Thomas (Set Design) is a product of Prairie View A & M University where he studied theatre technology. Since a young man he has been fascinated, passionate and inspired with the elements that go into scenic design. A native of Liberty, Missouri, his influence comes from artists like Dorothy Lee- his Jr. High School drama teacher who encouraged him to participate in every school production; Howard Jones who worked with community theatre and raised the design style and panache; and folk artist Alleen Purlie, who used things in her yard such as tools, wood and nature to make art, because art was for everybody. These common individuals assisted him in becoming something different and exciting. When asked of James, ‘why do you design sets?’ he said, I want people to come away with a sense of place and an element of surprise. Every place has its own emotional vibe that stimulates our emotional senses and perspective.” He has a 30 year history with The Ensemble Theatre as a scenic designer and has been the resident designer and technical consultant for over ten years. At The Ensemble, he has done scenic design for three world premiers and numerous regional premiers. He has won the Giorgee Awards for Best Set Design for Cinderella, The Waiting Room, The Wiz, Gem of the Ocean, and Blues for an Alabama Sky to name a few. His designs have been seen locally at Main Street Theatre, Houston Community College Heinen Theatre, Express Theatre, Theatre under the Stars and Houston Grand Opera as well as at the National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem, North Carolina. He has been a presenter with the National Institute of Theatre Technicians. He is currently technical director of the Fine Arts Department at Houston Community College, Central Campus. James’ art enriches life, finds the beauty within, and provides a personal connection for all. Adrian “A-Dub” Washington (Sound Design) is a Sound Designer, Recording Studio Owner / Live Engineer, Music Producer / Film Composer, and Musical Director, in his fifth season with The Ensemble he has combined all of his talents to become a five time Giorgee Award Winner. Some of his sound design works includes The Waiting Room (which was featured at this year’s National Black Theatre Festival in Winston Salem, NC), Seven Guitars, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Gem of the Ocean, Sty of the Blind Pig, Five Guys Named Moe, Constant Star, and the highly acclaimed musicals such as The Wiz, Ain’t Misbehavin’, and Cinderella just to name a few.
