THIS MONTH’S MEETING SPONSORED BY AES TORONTO APPRECIATES THE CONTINUING SUPPORT OF P L E A S E P O S T - M E M B E R S A N D G U E S T S W E L C O M E As the Square is surrounded by luxury condominium towers, sound control was paramount in the design of the venue. The directional loudspeakers are a key sound control feature of the audio system. The use of cardioid subwoofers and very directional line arrays allow the loudspeakers to cover the Square with clear performance sound, yet outside of the listening area, the sound levels are greatly reduced. The City retains full control over the system and maximum decibel levels are strictly enforced. Celebration Square Canada Day 2012 Image credit: Shai Gill The backbone of all of these performance systems is a digital transport network utilizing an extensive fibre optic infrastructure. The advantages of fibre optic over copper cable include increased bandwidth and greater signal integrity over distance. In addition, concerns of common power and grounding are essentially eliminated. A touch screen control system was installed to make the square accessible to all levels of authorized users. To address high wind concerns that have plagued a number of summer outdoor venues in the past (some of which unfortunately ended in injuries and deaths) a highly sensitive wind sensing system was installed to provide accurate information about current conditions. The system automatically broadcasts messages to a number of different authorities, anyone of which could shut-down performances in the event of inclement weather. Following a quick presentation in the Glass Pavilion, AES members will be allowed backstage to discover the project for themselves. Designers from Novita, installers and programmers from the installation contractor PA Plus and manufacturers’ representatives from Meyer Sound, Optocore, Renkus Heinz, etc will be stationed around the site to assist with the tour and demonstrate some of the technologies that were deployed.
