As we begin the Playhouse’s 2006-2007 season, I feel extremely fortunate to have had a rare
opportunity in the theatre: a second chance to continue to work with exemplary collaborators
on a brand-new musical for the American theatre.
Last summer, Zhivago was the first musical to be presented in the Potiker as a Page To Stage
workshop production. It was a work-in-progress still in the early stages of discovery with
minimal sets, costumes, lights and props. During rehearsals, composer Lucy Simon, lyricists
Michael Korie and Amy Powers, book writer Michael Weller and I were continually finding new
ways to meet the challenge of not only molding Boris Pasternak’s epic novel into a stage-worthy musical, but creating a sweeping
theatrical experience that captured both the passionate romance of Lara and Zhivago, as well as Pasternak’s great love for Mother
Russia, whose political and social upheaval he chronicled in his spellbinding novel.
As we watched the workshop performances and received feedback from audiences afterwards, we learned that by adding new
songs, music and scenes, the characters’ needs and desires would deepen and the social conflicts of the period could be more
solidly integrated into the piece. We incorporated these ideas into a revised script and score and, after a successful reading in
New York, made plans for a fully-realized Zhivago with new sets, costumes, lights and props to open the Playhouse’s 2006-2007
season in the Weiss Theatre.
When Heidi Ettinger, my longtime collaborator and set designer (Big River; Dracula, The Musical and The Secret Garden, composed
by Lucy Simon) came on board, our new Zhivago came alive with images that evoked Pasternak’s many locales — from the
warmth of the Gromekos’ Moscow home at holiday time, to the vast expanse of the snow-covered Russian tundra, to the bloody
battlefield where Lara and Zhivago’s passionate love story is born. Her design starkly contrasts the romance of a bygone era with
the austerity of Russia’s new post-revolution political landscape.
David Woolard’s (The Who’s Tommy, Eden Lane) costumes mark each character’s journey across this sweeping landscape, conjuring
the opulence of the early 20th-century Russian elite, and — as the century moves forward and the texture of the world becomes
rougher — the spartan, unadorned clothing of the Russian proletariat and military reflect the harsh changes taking place in the
country.
The technical elements of light and sound are so integral to a period musical like Zhivago, and we needed the best hands on deck.
Howell Binkley, who has worked with me on many shows, from Sweet and Hot to Jersey Boys, is an unparalleled lighting designer.
Steve Canyon Kennedy (Jersey Boys) is, in my opinion, the best sound designer in the country. With Eric Stern, our brilliant music
director (Palm Beach, Zhivago workshop), choreographer Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys) and a cast that could soar with Zhivago’s
every musical and dramatic note, our creative team was complete and we were ready to begin again.
I’m thrilled to have entered the world of Zhivago with my extraordinary team for a second time, and to now share the fruits of our
labors with you. You have been tremendous partners in helping us develop our new plays and musicals — particularly our Page To
Stage projects, several of which have gone on to success on Broadway and across the country.
So now, with the Playhouse’s 2006-2007 season officially off and running, I thank you for venturing forth with us.

THE HISTORY
I Am My Own Wife (2005)
1947 Gregory Peck, Dorothy McGuire and
Mel Ferrer found La Jolla Playhouse. For
18 summers, Hollywood actors explore
their craft on the stage until production is
suspended to focus on building a permanent,
world-class theatre facility.
1982 Construction is completed on a
theatre to be shared by the Playhouse and
UCSD’s Department of Theatre and Dance.
Des McAnuff is named Playhouse Artistic
Director.
Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays (2004)
1983 Peter Sellars’ production of The Visions
of Simone Machard re-opens the Playhouse.
It is distinguished by The Village Voice as one
of the Ten Best Regional Theatre Productions
of the Eighties.
1984 Big River opens the second season
and goes on to Broadway the following year,
winning seven Tony Awards.
1985 Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine
are in residence to rework their musical
Merrily We Roll Along. The Playhouse
produces its first commission – the world
premiere of Michael Weller’s Ghost on Fire,
starring Holly Hunter.
1987 McAnuff’s production of Lee Blessing’s
A Walk in the Woods marks the beginning of
one of the Playhouse’s longest associations
with a living playwright. The show wins Best
Play Outside of New York from the National
Association of Theatre Critics and moves
on to Broadway and the Soviet Union. The
Performance Outreach Program (POP) Tour
is inaugurated with Des McAnuff’s musical
Silent Edward.
1989 Steppenwolf Theatre Company is in
residence for Frank Galati’s adaptation of
The Grapes of Wrath, which continues on to
Broadway, winning a Tony Award for Best
Play and a Best of the Eighties citation from
The Village Voice.
1990 Athol Fugard directs the West Coast
premiere of his play, My Children! My
Africa!, which moves on to Los Angeles
and wins Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle
Awards.
1991 The Mandell Weiss Forum opens
with Lee Blessing’s Fortinbras, directed by
McAnuff, which receives a Time magazine
Ten Best citation.
1992 Pete Townshend is in residence for
a new stage version of The Who’s Tommy,
directed by McAnuff, which moves to
Broadway, winning five Tony Awards.
1997 La Jolla Playhouse celebrates the 50th
anniversary of its founding and the 15th year
since its revival. The season includes the West
Coast premiere of Rent and the world premiere
of Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman’s musical
Harmony.

Page to stage productions
Since its inception in 2001, three of
the seven projects developed in the
Playhouse’s Page To Stage New Play
Development Program have moved from
workshop to mainstage production on
Broadway or at the Playhouse. I Am My
Own Wife performed in the Mandell Weiss
Forum Studio in 2001 and, after a Tony
and Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway run,
returned to the Mandell Weiss Theatre in
2005. Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays began
here as a Page To Stage workshop in
the spring of 2004, going on to a sellout run on Broadway and a national
tour culminating in a 2005 Tony Award.
Zhivago is the latest production to travel
to the mainstage, having premiered as a
workshop in the Potiker Theatre in 2005.
1998 Athol Fugard’s The Captain’s Tiger
becomes the fifth Fugard play to be produced by
the Playhouse.
2002 Five world premieres, including I Think
I Like Girls, another Page To Stage workshop,
mark the most in a single Playhouse season.
1999 Michael Greif’s final season as Artistic
Director includes the American premiere of the
musical Jane Eyre, which goes on to Broadway
and receives five Tony nominations. The
Playhouse announces its Capital Campaign.
2003 A ground breaking year – literally – as
construction on the Joan and Irwin Jacobs
Center for La Jolla Playhouse begins.
1993 La Jolla Playhouse receives the Tony
Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre.
1994 Matthew Broderick makes his musical
debut in How to Succeed in Business Without
Really Trying, directed by McAnuff.
1995 Michael Greif’s inaugural season as
Artistic Director includes the world premiere
of An Almost Holy Picture, which goes on to
Broadway.
2000 Thoroughly Modern Millie world
premieres and goes on to Broadway, winning
six 2002 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
2004 Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays premieres
and goes on to Broadway, winning the Tony
Award for Special Theatrical Event. Jersey
Boys becomes the longest-running musical in
Playhouse history.
2001 Des McAnuff returns to the Playhouse
as Artistic Director. The Page To Stage New
Play Development Program is inaugurated with
Doug Wright’s I Am My Own Wife, featuring
Jefferson Mays. Wife goes on to win the 2004
Pulitzer Prize for Drama and two Tony Awards.
2005 The Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for
La Jolla Playhouse opens; the Sheila and
Hughes Potiker Theatre is inaugurated with
Private Fittings. Steven B. Libman is hired as
Managing Director and Jersey Boys breaks box
office records on Broadway.

Mark Emerson

He is also a graduate of Northwestern University
and an artistic associate of About Face Theatre

of Proust (directed by Mary Zimmerman) among
others. Last summer he portrayed Mother Russia
and more in La Jolla Playhouse’s Page To Stage
workshop version of Zhivago. Mr. Emerson is a

Michael Weller (Book)
Co-founder/Supervising Mentor for the Mentor
Project at the Cherry Lane Theatre, Mr. Weller
has written for stage (best known plays include
Moonchildren; Loose Ends; Buying Time; Ghost
on Fire; Spoils of War and What the Night is For);
film (Hair; Ragtime; Lost Angels) and television
(Spoils of War for Hallmark and writer/producer
for Once & Again). His play, 50 Words, will
open on Broadway in 2007, starring Phillip
Seymour Hoffman and Elizabeth Marvel, directed
by Austin Pendleton, produced by Emanuel
Azenberg. He is working with Taylor Hackford on
a musical about the rock band Fleetwood Mac.
He serves on the councils of the Dramatists Guild
of America and the Writers Guild of America,
East, Inc.
Lucy Simon (Music)
made her Broadway debut in 1991 as the
composer of The Secret Garden for which she
received Tony and Drama Desk nominations, the
DramaLogue Award and a Grammy nomination
for the recording of the score. The Secret Garden
had a new production for the millennium under
the auspices of The Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
It broke box office records during its run at
Stratford and continued its run on the West End.
Ms. Simon wrote and produced the songs and
soundtrack for the multiaward-winning HBO
movie, The Positively True Adventures of the
Alleged Texas Cheerleader Murdering Mom.
Ms. Simon received two Grammy Awards for
her In Harmony albums, which she co-wrote and
produced. Ms. Simon began her professional
career at age 16 with her sister Carly as part of
The Simon Sisters. She is thrilled to be working
on Zhivago with Des McAnuff at La Jolla
Playhouse.
Michael Korie (Co-Lyricist)
wrote the lyrics to Grey Gardens, book by Doug
Wright, music by Scott Frankel, which premiered
this season Off Broadway at Playwrights
Horizons, directed by Michael Greif. He wrote
book and lyrics to Doll (Sundance Institute,
Chicago’s Ravinia Festival) and Meet Mister
Future (Cardiff Festival, Barrington Stage, 2006)
both with composer Mr. Frankel. His librettos for
operas with composer Stewart Wallace include
Harvey Milk (San Francisco Opera, New York City

Des McAnuff
(Artistic Director/
Director, Zhivago)
is a two-time Tony
Award-winning director.
Mr. McAnuff served as
artistic director of the
Playhouse from its 1983
rebirth through 1994, during which time he
directed 21 productions, including musicals
and contemporary and classic plays. Under his
leadership, the Playhouse has won more than
300 theatre awards, including the 1993 Tony
Award as America’s Outstanding Regional
Theatre. He returned as artistic director of
the Playhouse in 2001. Productions directed
by Mr. McAnuff during his first tenure include
How to Succeed in Business Without Really
Trying (Playhouse 1994, Broadway 1995, five
Tony Award nominations); The Who’s Tommy
(director as well as co-author with Pete
Townshend; Playhouse 1992, Broadway 1993,
Tony Award Best Director of a Musical, London
Olivier Award Best Director 1994); A Walk in
the Woods (Playhouse 1987, Broadway 1988,
Moscow and Lithuania 1989-90) and Big River
(Playhouse 1984, Broadway 1985, seven Tony
Awards including Best Director of a Musical and
Best Musical). Recent productions directed at
the Playhouse include the workshop production
of Zhivago (2005); Palm Beach (2005); Private
Fittings (2005); Tom Donaghy’s Eden Lane (2003);

McAnuff directed Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays,
which was produced at La Jolla Playhouse in
2004 and went to Broadway in 2005, receiving a
2005 Tony Award before embarking on a sell-out
National tour in 2006. McAnuff’s latest theatre
production, Jersey Boys (La Jolla Playhouse
2004), a critically-acclaimed new musical
based on the story of Frankie Valli and The Four
Seasons, is currently running to sold-out houses
on Broadway and kicks off its first national tour
in San Francisco this fall. Mr. McAnuff will direct
two additional productions in the upcoming
season at La Jolla Playhouse: a reimagining

Kelly Devine (Associate Choreographer)

Jolla Playhouse, all under the direction of Des

Eric Stern (Musical Director)
is a veteran of over 15 Broadway shows including
Follies; Parade; Candide; Will Rogers Follies;
Gypsy; Sunday in the Park with George; Carousel
and Rags, and more than 30 albums with such
artists as Dawn Upshaw, Mandy Patinkin and
Audra McDonald. Last year he led productions
of Palm Beach and Zhivago here at La Jolla
Playhouse. Mr. Stern has conducted and recorded
with many of the world’s best orchestras, with
soloists as diverse as Thomas Hampson, Betty
Buckley and Dianne Reeves. He is Barbara Cook’s
music director, as well as a frequent guest
conductor of the BBC National Orchestra of
Wales. Mr. Stern has won an Emmy and several
Grammy and Gramophone Awards.

Ursula Meyer (Voice and Speech)
has been teaching and coaching voice and text
since 1980. She has taught, among other places,
numerous years at the Yale School of Drama and
currently at U.C. San Diego. She has coached for
the Yale Repertory Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse,
South Coast Repertory Theatre, the Guthrie
Theatre in Minneapolis, and is an adjunct Voice
and Text Director for the Oregon Shakespeare
Festival. Ms. Meyer has studied with the heads
of voice at the Royal Shakespeare Company
and the National Theatre – Cicily Berry, Patsy
Rodenburg and Andrew Wade. She graduated
with distinction from the Advanced Voice Studies
Program at the Central School of Speech and
Drama in London and is a designated Linklater
Teacher. She resides happily in Encinitas,
California with her handsome husband, actor
James Newcomb, and a six-year-old ball of light
named Daniel.
Allison Horsley (Dramaturg)
has served as La Jolla Playhouse’s dramaturg
on the workshop production of Zhivago, Private
Fittings, Jersey Boys, Paris Commune and the
POP Tour productions West of The 5, Bay and The
Spectacles of Doom and Guitar. Past dramaturgy
includes Big Love and Be Aggressive (Dallas
Theater Center); Three Tall Women (Centerstage)
and Betrayal and The Birds (Yale Repertory
Theatre). She holds a M.F.A. in Dramaturgy from
Yale School of Drama and recently translated The
Cherry Orchard for a 2007 production at Oregon
Shakespeare Festival. She is a regional vice

(Managing Director)
Libman’s career in the
performing arts spans more
than 20 years of executive
leadership in the theatre,
dance and presenting
disciplines. In 2004, he
formed the arts management and leadership
development consulting firm The Libman Group.
From 1991-2004 he served as the Managing
Director for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. As
managing director, he served as executive
producer for all new ballets and directed strategic
planning, financial management, marketing,
development, production management, labor
relations, and touring functions. He was
responsible for prestigious tours to the Hollywood
Bowl, Wolf Trap, the Joyce Theatre, and Taiwan.
From 1987-1991 he served as the Development
Director for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. During
his 17-year tenure at PBT Libman raised over $50
million and produced over 20 original ballets.
Libman teaches Human Resources Management
for the graduate Arts Management program at
Carnegie Mellon University. He is on the board
of trustees of Dance/USA, the Greater Pittsburgh
Arts Council and is a trustee of the AGMA
Retirement Plan and Health Fund. He has been a
panelist for the Heinz Endowments, Pennsylvania
Council on the Arts and the National Endowment
for the Arts. He is the author of several speeches
and published articles on arts management.
Previous professional experience includes The
Fulton Opera House in Lancaster, PA, and the
Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, RI. He
holds a BA in Performing Arts Management from
Rhode Island College, where he received the
2000 Alumni Honor Roll Award in recognition of
his achievements within the arts.

Debby Buchholz
(General Manager)
Ms. Buchholz joined La Jolla
Playhouse in September,
2002. Prior to joining La
Jolla Playhouse, she was
Counsel to the John F.
Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the
National Symphony Orchestra in Washington,
D.C., where she oversaw the business and legal
arrangements for the Kennedy Center and the
National Symphony Orchestra. She worked on
numerous special events and television and
radio projects including the Kennedy Center
Honors and the PBS special, The Kennedy Center
Presents. Ms. Buchholz was a member of the
Kennedy Center’s Senior Management Committee
charged with determining budgets, programs
and policies for the Center. She was a faculty
member of the Smithsonian Institution’s program
on Legal Problems of Museum Administration.
Prior to joining the Kennedy Center, she served
as a corporate attorney in New York City and
Washington, D.C. She is a graduate of UCSD
and Harvard Law School. Ms. Buchholz and
her husband, noted author and White House
economic policy advisor Todd Buchholz, live
in Solana Beach and are the proud parents of
Victoria, Katherine and Alexia.

Dear La Jolla Playhouse Family and Friends:
You can’t imagine my excitement at launching the 2006-2007 season with the much-anticipated
world premiere of Zhivago. After seeing the workshop version of this piece — performed last
season as part of the acclaimed Page To Stage New Play Development Program — I, along
with many of you, have been eagerly awaiting the mainstage production.
Zhivago represents a strong example of the La Jolla Playhouse mission. As one of the country’s
largest research and development facilities for new plays, La Jolla Playhouse is always striving
to contribute to the canon of great American theatre. To do this, we develop new pieces right here in San Diego, nurtured by a
stellar group of artists, administrators and production staff.
What you are witnessing here on our stages is part of a long tradition of the development of groundbreaking musicals. From
our beginnings, La Jolla Playhouse has been a powerhouse in the field, with such contributions as Big River, The Who’s Tommy,
Thoroughly Modern Millie and our latest Broadway hit, Jersey Boys, among many others. Later this season, Des McAnuff will
take us to into the wonderful world of Oz with a reimagined production of The Wiz, infused with an urban beat. We hope that
these new entries into the field will become important pieces of American theatre, creating a lasting impact on our community
and giving folks from other parts of the country the chance to see what we’re doing.
Speaking of important work, between the end of the 2005 mainstage season and the beginning of this season, we concluded our
touring show for children, West of The 5, commissioned and produced as part of our annual Performance Outreach Program (POP)
Tour. Thousands of San Diego County elementary school students — more than ever before! — saw their libraries, gymnasiums
and cafeterias transformed into magical story-telling environments. The POP Tour is one of our most valued programs, and with
the support of our patrons through the Adopt-A-School program, we truly do make a difference in the lives of San Diego County’s
children.
We have much to look forward to this season. The Board is percolating with ideas to bring this organization to an even higher
level. To that end, we have elected several dedicated individuals to serve as committee chairs on our board: Sheri Jamieson
(Nominating), Osborn Hurston (Finance), Barbara ZoBell (Education), Les Cohen (Investment), Florence Cohen and Dale Steele
(Annual Fund), Robert Caplan (Audit) and Ed Dennis (Long Range Planning). Believe me when I say that these are the people you’d
want in charge of helping us reach our most important — and ambitious — goals.
Finally, I want to thank the staff at La Jolla Playhouse led by the Managing Director, Steven Libman. I’m proud of all the hard work

THE PATRON SERVICES CENTER is located in
the lobby area of each theatre. A representative is
available to answer questions and hand out assisted
hearing devices, restaurant guides, performance
schedules and subscription information.
BARS AND CONCESSIONS are open one hour
prior to curtain and during intermissions. To avoid the
rush, intermission beverages can be ordered before
the show.
PLEASE SILENCE all electronic devices including
cellular phones, watches and pagers before the
performance.
CAMERAS AND RECORDING DEVICES are strictly
prohibited in the theatre. Please check these items
with the House Manager and turn off your camera
phone.
PARKING is $2. Upon arrival to campus, please
purchase your parking permit from the attendant on
duty for up to 1.5 hours prior. Cars without permits
are subject to ticketing by UCSD Campus Police.
LATECOMERS or PATRONS WHO LEAVE THEIR
SEAT DURING THE PERFORMANCE will be
admitted to the standing room section of the theatre
at the discretion of the House Manager. They may
take their assigned seats at intermission. La Jolla
Playhouse accepts no responsibility for inconvenience
to latecomers.
DOCTORS AND PARENTS expecting calls during
the performance should leave their name and seat
number with the House Manager before the show.

ACCESSIBILITY
La Jolla Playhouse provides wheelchair-accessible
seating and parking. Wheelchair seat locations are
available for wheelchair users and a companion at all
performances – be sure to advise the reservationist

impaired patrons. Devices are available, free of
charge, at the Patron Services Center prior to

A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE STUDENT BOARD

Dear Patrons of the La Jolla Playhouse,
As the president of the La Jolla Playhouse Student Board of Trustees, I would like
to give you some information about the purpose and activities of the Student Board.
We are a group of 15 high school students who are committed to bringing other
students from the community to the La Jolla Playhouse to experience a unique
blend of new and classic works.
To fulfill our mission, members volunteer at the Playhouse, participate in Playhouse
events and put on events targeted to students. Our events are centered on the
season as we work to get kids interested in theatre who may otherwise be going
to movies or watching television. For example, this year we held an event for over
100 high school students from around San Diego who came to see Much Ado About
Nothing and meet the cast of the play. We also established a relationship with
the Storefront Shelter for Homeless Teens and some of its residents were able to
attend a performance of The Miser.
We have many exciting plans for the future, including an event for Zhivago on May
19th as well as one for The Wiz scheduled for September 29th. Our immediate goal
is recruiting new members for the Student Board who are currently in high school
and have a strong interest in volunteering at the Playhouse. We welcome those
who are excited by theatre and the arts, though we do not require that applicants
be involved in theatre as an activity.
As a Board, we will stay true to our mission, even as new members add to our ranks
and old members depart.

Talk Back Tuesday: After select Tuesday evening performances,
participate in a lively discussion with actors and/or artistic staff.

HOW TO LAND A ROLE WITH THE STUDENT BOARD OF TRUSTEES
La Jolla Playhouse’s Student Board of Trustees is an advocacy and advisory board
comprised of creative and dynamic students throughout San Diego County who
demonstrate strong leadership qualities. The purpose of the Board is to introduce a
young audience to the innovative spirit of La Jolla Playhouse and the imaginative and
surprising work it produces.
Student Board members learn about the artistic vision and general operation of the
Playhouse and contribute to that vision by supporting educational, marketing and
development programs that reach out to the San Diego community.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must:
• Have an interest and passion for theatre as an art form
• Demonstrate strong leadership qualities
• Be able to work as a team on projects and in discussions

Learn about La Jolla Playhouse’s season and attend all Playhouse productions
Provide support for Playhouse programs
Offer ideas for engaging and developing new audiences
Develop marketing and outreach strategies
Serve as an advocate and representative for the Playhouse in the community and in

• Attend monthly Student Board meetings
• Commit to at least 3 hours of service per month
SELECTION PROCESS
• Completion of application
• Submit two references (teachers, counselors or community leaders) that the
nominating committee may call
• Interview with Playhouse staff and members of the Student Board nominating
committee

PERFORMANCE OUTREACH PROGRAM TOUR (POP TOUR)
Every school year, the Playhouse commissions a brand-new
play that addresses real concerns of today’s youth and brings
a professional production to schools and community centers in
diverse communities across San Diego. School performances
are also integrated into the classroom curriculum through
pre-performance visits by Playhouse teaching artists.I

In partnership with San Diego County and City Visual and
Performing Arts Department, Playhouse teaching artists teach
theatre skills and address issues of relevance to the lives of
students to ensure that theatre is an integral part of the education
of all San Diego children and to begin a relationship with the
Playhouse that will continue as these young people grow into
adulthood.

Six-week intensive training in acting, voice, movement and text for
grades 10-12. By audition only.
YOUNG P E RF ORME RS’ WORKSHOP
Creative exploration of theatre arts in a three-week summer
program for students entering into grades 2-9.

Pre-show talk about the production, a buffet dinner and play, plus
a post-show discussion with cast and crew led by Playhouse staff.
