Palio di Buti
17 January
BUTI
The first horse race of the year in Tuscany, the Palio in Buti, takes its origins from the religious
festival that is held on 17 January to celebrate St. Anthony, the protector of domestic animals.
According to a tradition dating back to the beginning of the 19th century, all of the domestic
animals in Buti were to be blessed by the parish priest. Of all the animals, the horse, being the
only method of locomotion, was particularly appreciated. After the horses had been blessed,
their owners would challenge each other to horse races. This custom brought about the
tradition of the Palio.
A parade of the seven districts is held in the morning; the race is run in the afternoon on a
750-metre track. Spectators can follow the competition from three seated platforms and on
three giant screens. The prize-giving takes place after the competition, with the "Cencio" being
awarded to the jockey from the winning district.

Santa Croce Carnival
February-March (Carnival period)
SANTA CROCE SULL’ARNO
An authentic folk festival where the inhabitants of Santa Croce turn their inspiration and
fantasy to creating masks of unique beauty and originality over four afternoon courses and one
night course. The four masked groups (Il Nuovo Astro, La Lupa, La Nuova Luna and Gli
Spensierati) put their all into the magnificent costumes covered in sequins, parading on the
"fossi" (the central square of the town) in a triumph of colours and choreography.

Pisan New Year
25 March
PISA
The Pisans traditionally make the beginning of the new year coincide with midday on 25 March,
when the sunrays filtering through a window of Pisa Cathedral hit a point above the Giovanni
Pisano pulpit.
Pisa is thus the first city in the world to celebrate the new year, nine months prior to the
official calendar date. The Pisan calendar was officially in effect until 1749, when, by grand
ducal edict, it was aligned with the Gregorian calendar. Celebrations begin at 11.30am with the
historical parade that leads to the Cathedral, followed by a mass and the solemn proclamation
of the New Year.

Basket Procession
Easter Monday
SANTA MARIA A MONTE
The life of saintliness and devotion to the needy of the Blessed Diana, the town’s patron saint,
is commemorated every year on Easter Monday with the Basket Procession (Processione delle
Paniere). The name is derived from the fact that young girls carry baskets of flowers on their
heads along the path that leads to the chapel dedicated to the Blessed Diana. Originally, a
small barrel of oil was carried along with the flowers. It was used to keep the lamp placed by
the remains of Diana lit.

Wheeled-boat race
Third Sunday of May
CASTELFRANCO DI SOTTO
The Palio dei Barchini con le Ruote (a race involving wheeled boats) was created to revive the
ancient tradition of the boat race held on the Arno by Castelfranco’s sand-diggers on important
occasions.
Today's competition is held on the street with the distinctive wheeled boats driven by two
oarsmen. Each boat represents one of the four village districts. The competition is preceded by
a procession in historical costume with musicians and flag wavers. Collateral events include a
mini-palio, the Palio Rosa, a tug-o-war and a medieval dinner.

Cherry Festival
Late May – Early June
LARI
Lari’s Cherry Festival is one of Tuscany's oldest festivals that usually takes place on the last
weekend in May and the first weekend in June. The festival features artistic and cultural events
and a hugely popular food stand. Obviously the true star is the Lari cherry, offered in its 19
traditional varieties, with their differing but intense flavours, also due to the fruit being fully
ripe in this period.
The local cherry producers set up stands in the main town square, offering baskets of fresh
fruit and also products, such as conserves and liqueurs, derived from the red berries.

San Ranieri Illuminations
16 June
PISA
The San Ranieri Illuminations are set up in Pisa in the evening of June 16 in anticipation of the
patron saint’s day. Some seventy thousand wax candles are placed in smooth, transparent
glasses and hung from white painted wooden frames designed to emphasise the outlines of the
buildings, bridges, churches and towers that line the Pisan Lungarni (river embankments).
Oil lamps illuminate the Leaning Tower and are also placed along the battlements of the wall
that encloses the Field of Miracles. Hundreds of candles are also set afloat on the river. The
charming event concludes with a firework display.

San Ranieri Historical Regatta
17 June
PISA
On the afternoon of Pisa’s patron saint’s day four vessels representing the four ancient districts
of the city take to the Arno to compete in a regatta in commemoration of the city’s maritime
tradition. Each district sports its colours: white and red for San Martino, white and green for
Sant'Antonio, white and pale blue for Santa Maria and white and yellow for San Francesco.
The fixed-seat boats with eight oarsmen and a cox challenge one another on an upstream
route measuring one and a half kilometres. The final victory is not decided by the order of the
boats across the finish line, but depends on the agility of the climber that accompanies each
crew. Once across the finish line, the climber must scale one of the four ropes to the top of a
ten-metre-high mast and grab the blue banner of victory. A pair of geese is awarded to the
crew who come last.

Gioco del Ponte
Last Saturday of June
PISA
The first recorded edition of the Gioco del Ponte (Game of the Bridge) dates from 1568. Being
involved in direct physical clashes, combatants were fitted with armour, a helmet and a
‘targone’, a sort wooden shield over a metre long which was also used, rather improperly, as a
weapon. On account of the violent nature of the fights Grand Duke Peter Leopold refused to
consent to any further battles following the 1785 edition.
In modern times the Gioco was resumed in 1935 with the same format as the editions of old.
The post-war period saw the invention of a mechanical device intended to avoid direct clashes,
a sort of large trolley that the competing factions (Tramontana and Mezzogiorno) push in
opposite directions in a strenuous attempt to “capture” the bridge.
The fight is preceded by a 700-strong historical procession in which Tramontana and
Mezzogiorno troops parade on the river embankments to meet at the Ponte di Mezzo.

Every year Miss Cicciona (Miss Fatty) men and women of all ages coming from all over Italy
parade on the catwalk – as long as they weigh more than 100 kg (the ladies) and 150 kg (the
gentlemen). Increasing success has brought the contest to the limelight in Italy and abroad.
Participants and winners have become testimonials of a lifestyle in which showing off on the
catwalk is not a prerogative of skinny models but a right that everyone should have to express
themselves, whether they are ‘bony’ or ‘soft’ as long as it is fun.

Roman Theatre Festival

VOLTERRA
The International Roman Theatre Festival was created with the purpose of holding a mini
review aimed at promoting the Volterra archaeological site, which is, to all intents and
purposes, the most important archaeological evidence of the Roman spirit in Tuscany.
The number of performances in the festival has grown over the years despite limited funds
thanks to the generosity of numerous artists who have been captivated by the project and
have supported it with their presence, often at no charge. The performances include not only
theatre, but also music, dance and poetry.

Italian cities boasting a similar heritage.
A stroll through Volterra is a walk six centuries back in time, amid soldiers and crossbowmen,

Stazione Leopolda
PISA
Every year the city of the Leaning Tower offers the most exquisite and refined Tuscan cakes
and desserts: an unmissable opportunity to discover authentic hand-made products and to
visit monuments, cities, medieval villages and some of the most evocative landscapes in
Tuscany. Dolcemente sees the participation of producers that have placed Pisa and its province
among the principal European centres for the production of high quality chocolate and
desserts: these delicacies are selected based upon ancient recipes as well as the use of
ingredients of the highest quality.
