AS SEEN IN AS SEEN IN ELEVATE MOMMY MAKEOVER WHAT TO EXPECT… YOU WERE EXPECTING after When it comes to pregnancy, a woman will likely spend a lot of time preparing for what life is going to be like with a baby—but not for the physical changes that may happen in the months and years post-childbirth. Don’t get stuck in a permanent rut. Here are solutions to the problems you may have thought you couldn’t do anything about. BY MARISSA STAPLEY-PONIKOWSKI PHOTOS: THINKSTOCK, Hormone changes can lead to dryness and premature aging of the skin. Your body produces extra estrogen when you’re pregnant so a post-baby hormone shift is normal. “Generally speaking, when estrogen levels decline, the ability of the skin to retain moisture decreases,” says Toronto dermatologist Dr. Paul Cohen, MD, FRCPC, DABD (drpaulcohen.com). “This can definitely take its toll on the skin.” 36 elevate | may + june.13 elevatemagazine.com THE FIX Book an in-clinic Oxygen Peel at Cohen’s clinic, the Rosedale Dermatology Centre. “Our treatment is really hydrating, with ingredients like green tea and vitamin A,” says Dr. Cohen. Because of the vitamin A, this treatment is not safe during pregnancy, but is ok for postpartum as long as you check with your doctor. “It infuses moisture into the skin and gives you that red carpet glow.” Dr. Cohen recommends a series of four or five peels, at one-month intervals. elevatemagazine.com is born—but, because of something called skin “memory,” there’s a good chance they’ll eventually return, especially if you aren’t vigilant about sun care. AT HOME You can address dry, tiredlooking skin by adding an intense serum to your beauty regimen. Try Yon-ka Serum Vital ($98), which is especially recommended for postpartum skin because of the restorative botanicals. If dark circles and tired-looking eyes are an issue, try Yon-ka Phyto-Contour eye cream ($52, at spas and clinics; phytoderm.com, 1 -800 -361 -1263) with rosemary to provide an immediate refreshing effect. THE FIX Dr. Stacey Shillington, ND, a naturopath who practices out of the Rosedale Dermatology Centre, performs allnatural vitamin and glutathione IV infusions to reduce hyper-pigmentation. “Glutathione is the most effective antioxidant in our body, and, when used responsibly, it is incredibly safe and works to lighten the skin by inhibiting an enzyme called tyrinase, which produces melanin in the body,” says Dr. Shillington. “It can take anywhere from four to 10 treatments to get the desired results, but it leaves the complexion beautifully even and blemish-free.” 2 THE PROBLEM Melasma. “Pregnancy hormones can also lead to skin discolouration,” says Dr. Cohen. These dark spots, which are called melasma and sometimes referred to as “the mask of pregnancy,” might go away after the baby ▲ 1 THE PROBLEM THE COST $135 to $225 for each onehour treatment, depending on the number of supplements incorporated into the masks. NOTE TO MOMS: Many moms carefully apply sunscreen to their little ones, and forget about themselves. Don’t do this! Your skin will eventually pay for this in sun damage. If you choose or are able to breast feed, guess what? They get even bigger. Sadly, this effect doesn’t generally last and you may be left with breasts that aren’t quite as perky as they used to be. THE FIX Again, this is not something to worry about addressing immediately post-baby. Give your body some time to adjust to post-breastfeeding changes and then evaluate. A breast lift may be a good option for you. Breast lift surgery involves removing excess skin and reshaping the breast and tissue to create a more uplifted profile,” says Burlington, Ont., cosmetic surgeon Dr. Douglas Grace, BSc, MD, FRCSC. (drgrace.ca). “We perform this procedure often for women who have had children as it can produce very dramatic results in creating a more youthful and shapely profile.” The procedure takes approximately one and a half hours. Recovery typically takes one to two weeks, although daily activities can often be resumed within five to seven days. A breast lift will only work for you if you still have adequate breast volume. If there is both a loss of firmness and volume, ask your doctor about augmentation. THE COST $5,500 to $7,000 Go to our Facebook page at facebook.com/elevatemagazine or visit us online at elevatemagazine.com for more details. Grow Lush Lashes THE COST Varies depending on the procedures performed, but starts at approximately $10,000. THE FIX This is not something you should worry about right away. Through a combination of diet and exercise, you can likely get yourself back into pre-baby shape. But, especially after large babies, multiples or more than one pregnancy, you may find there’s not much more you can do. Toronto cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Mahmood Kara, MD, FRCSC (drkara. com), recommends a procedure called SAFElipo. He uses this liposuction technique to remove fat just under the skin, stimulate skin contraction and smooth wrinkles, lumps and bumps with a special instrument. If you can’t take time off for surgery, Dr. Kara recommends a non-invasive technique called CoolSculpting, which targets stubborn fat using a cooling technique called cryolipolysis. There is no pain or downtime. 5 THE PROBLEM It’s been a few years, and you simply don’t feel like yourself, all over. elevatemagazine.com DON’T FORGET THE LITTLE ONES! AFTER PREGNANCY in addition to taking care of ourselves, putting our baby’s needs as a priority is a natural mother’s instinct. Effective, good quality and mild enough skin care for babies helps with keeping your child’s skin soft, free of irritation and toxin-free. NEW! Ultherapy® non surgical face lift DR. BAUMANN BABY CLEANSING LOTION, $39.90 is a mild cleanser that is great for bath time and mild enough for your baby’s skin. PHOTOGRAPHY: THINKSTOCK WIN THE BODY AS SEEN IN THE FIX It might be time for a “mommy makeover,” which involves a combination of surgeries, like liposuction, a tummy tuck, breast augmentation and a lift, to achieve dramatic results. These procedures may be performed during one surgical session or over the course of about three months, with a recovery time of at least one week for each surgery. “Women who have these procedures done are generally very happy because they feel good about themselves,” says Toronto cosmetic surgeon Dr. William Middleton, B.Sc., MD, FRCS (C) (middletoncosmetic.com). “They’ve dealt with the changes in the body that have happened as a result of having children, which can include loose skin, lost breast volume and excess weight.” To be a candidate you must be in good physical and psychological health. DR. BAUMANN ZINC CREAM, $59.90, works well to alleviate stubborn rashes on your baby’s skin. The active zinc oxide calms, heals and soothes the skin and also has antibacterial properties. elevatemagazine.com skinmedxinc.com [email protected] 647.220.7587 Yorkville may + june.13 | elevate 39
